What the hell does Cameron mean they won't have the budget to finish the scenes for the special edition in November? The movie made $2.5 billion worldwide!

Do you have any idea how much 30 minutes of cgi would cost? It is a very high number. I'm amazed that there finishing of 6 minutes worth for the later blu release.

ps: the movie has made over $2.6 billion worldwide.

I have to believe that number would easily be made back on the Special Edition BD/DVD sales.

Possibly, but how much more would it make. There already finishing off (or have) another 6 minutes of footage and are including 20-30 minutes of rough footage, do you really think extra footage would get more people to buy given that they alreadyswill sell due to those extra six minutes and special features.

Remember, Fox is a business afterall.

They might go for a triple dip later on with all of the footage.

The way things look Avatar could be the highest selling Blu ray of all time. I have had my reservations about this movie but I will admit that I am stoked to see it on Blu ray.

It's simple math. The movie was give or take 2h30. to finish 30 mn of additional stuff is likely to cost in the range of 1/5 of what the 2h30 movie cost. (we know the actual shoot wasn't costly, post production was). If you take in that it cost 280 millions bucks (which may not be the final amount), you're speaking 30 to 56 millions dollars to complete those scenes (including sound mixing, relooping with the actors, new contracts drawn with lawyers paid etc). It's a bit huge.

There's only one way it can happen. If Cameron pushes all out for it. Fox will never take the risk on their own. If Cameron wills something, it may come into existence. If he has doubts, then it's hopeless.

And that's just the cost of those 30 minutes. The documentaries, etc. have to be paid as well. If James Cameron felt that those 30 minutes were essential, I'm sure we'd gotten those with finished effects, but he sees them more as something from a work in progress version. So I don't mind.

I hope those 6 minutes morph into something closer to 10+ minutes by the time this comes out.

It would already be 10 minutes, but Cameron has said the 4 minute Earth sequence will only be available as a seperate deleted scene, and not in an extended format of the film.

Hope he changes his mind on that

Avatar was too long as it was. 6 minutes is one thing but 20-30?! Cameron is doing the right thing in showing these in a rough cut form, to show potential differences to enthusiasts as opposed to creating a new, unnecessary cut of the film. I'll be happy with my theatrical all the way, though I'd be interested in hearing about what is added with later releases, I don't think I'll be double dipping for extended cuts or special features, as I don't like the film enough.
