And, I'm sorry, did he write it like 20 years ago?! Even if it wasn't reminiscent of movies like Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, Fern Gully etc it still uses established storyline tropes which have been around forever.. a love story from people from 'different worlds' (metaphorical or literal), please... Romeo and Juliet did that and THAT wasn't even an original story! (and as for Pocahontas, that is like a true story of something that happened, what, 500 years ago!). Besides, it's not just the cliched and ultimately predictable story... it's most of the characters, and the dialogue... when the bad guy (I can't remember his name, but he can be known as 'bad guy' if ever a bad guy could be) said 'we will fight terror with terror' etc I cringed so much, everyone is ridiculously two dimensional and cliched... that is just unquestionable in my book.

One of the big differences between many people's opinions on Avatar is whether its 'wow'/enjoyment factor transcends this, and to what degree it does. For me, it really did and I'd give it a 4/5 personally because I REALLY enjoyed watching it. And I'm not one to like all blockbuster movies because they're 'good fun' - I'm relatively fussy and hate Michael Bay's movies (and I have actually seen them), hate the Pirates sequels, and actually think the Dark Knight is rather overrated (big scriptural flaws again, but in quite different areas). But Avatar did somehow work for me as a cinematic experience in spite of its obvious story/character/scriptual flaws and it worked for me enough to get a 4/5... and that is QUITE an achievement considering the problems it has are some of the biggest of their kind I've seen in a movie in quite a while.

So yeah, the review is dead right... I think I just enjoyed the movie and found it affecting enough regardless of the highlighted problems to grant it a 4.5... but that's only half a points difference, really.
its all opinions, just like people think this is a 4-4.5/5 some people think twilight is a 4/5

without a doubt the PQ/AQ is beyond superb but like alot of people i just think its below mediocre in terms of story and writing and so he says it was written 20 years, it could of went through 1000 rewrites and could of been completely different

I think the Blu-ray.com's review of Avatar is pretty much spot on!!

If the story wasn't so bad I would really, really, really, really wanna get this disc, but I simply can't justify buying a movie, if the story is just too ridiculous!

It's amazing how people complain about the SW Prequels like crazy, yet this piece of 1-D unoriginality is awesome and like a godsend to them!

I, like many others, quite loved the visuals of the film, although I still think that the blue aliens are a terrible design and the soundtrack is one of the worst ever!

However, the absolute black and white mentality of this film, hysterically corny dialogue, the phenomenal predictability of it all, let alone the most unoriginal script....I am terribly upset that Cameron screwed this one up so badly!! He has lost his mind!!

He, the one who always talks about how the characters are the most important aspect in the end, has done the exact opposite, and the worst thing is, people don't even see it, for they are so blinded by the visual spectacle of it all.

Anyway, have fun with it if you can.

YMMV, but it may depend on where you shop. This isn't scientific by any means, but based on the feedback I've read, Best Buy's copies come in eco-cases, though quite a few Target purchases came in proper, regular cases.

I have to agree with Bluray.com's review on Avatar.

5.0 video
5.o audio

The picture is fantastic. And the audio is superb.

I have to agree with the review on the movie part. It's pretty lame, but the visuals, progress with CGI and technical achievements, make this blu-ray a must own.

Default Avatar Blu-ray Audio Hiccup

Just watched the movie all the way through and noticed that at exactly 2:37:45 the music seemed to pause or "hiccup" for a second. I know that this is during the credits but I was still wondering if anyone else noticed that?

Just finished watching it for the first time ever. PQ was one of the best I've seen. I haven't seen it in theaters 3d or 2d but I can tell by watching the bluray what it would have been like in 3d. The bluray although is in 2d showed awesome depth. At some scenes I swear it felt like it was popping out of the screen.

The irony is that everything you said could, should and have been applied to the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The difference with Avatar is that Cameron brought two areas of technological innovation to filmaking, through improvements in the motion-capturing process, as well as strides in 3D presentation, whereas Lucas was just content with using the best resources available to him at the time. Cameron introduced a level of viewer immersion and captivated a sense of imagination that Lucas never did with any prequel installment.

For the record, I consider myself a Star Wars geek (as an active member of a statewide club and former collector), but as a film enthusiast, I have always been critical of the prequels. I hold nothing less than utter contempt for all of the prequel films because they tarnished everything I valued in the original trilogy. I acknowledge the fact that the storyline and dialogue are secondary (maybe even tertiary) elements in Avatar, but what it lacked substantively was counterbalanced by a sense of involvement and fascination that viewers hadn't experienced prior to this.

3,5 for a movie??

That's major fail for blu-ray.com. Stupid rating for films is one of the reasons I stopped reading highdefdigest.com
blu-ray.com shouldn't do same mistake. Avatar is obviously 5/5 movie.

The only problem I have with this blu because it is so perfect is that everything else is going to be a dissappointment.

I have to agree. I just finished watching it and the PQ was simply amazing.... And I'm not even going to start to talk about the AQ. The THX trailer after the credits sounded crazy. I'm very impressed all around.

If you already are sure that you like a movie, just skip to the technical section.

Personally, I like reading differing opinions on film, even if I don't agree with them (like, how somebody can dislike Shawshank Redemption is beyond me - but I digress).
