The biggest issue I had with the movie wasn't that it didn't do anything new, few movies do these days. It was that it didn't do anything very WELL, at least as far as plot, characters, story-telling is concerned. It wasn't terrible, but it was by no means great. Not to say I didn't enjoy most of what was on screen, but I don't see this moving movies forward in any way other than visual FX.

Than as long as you enjoyed it that is all that matters. Let's be honest not to many movie are original with the plot, characters ect..now a days. I think a movie a good as long as it's entertaining and makes me forget about all the crappy stuff about life...movies like Transformers ROTF or 2012 were pretty bad with the plot an acting but I sure enjoyed all the special affects, and that made them worth it for me.

I am a movie buff. I tend to lead towards dramas as My top 5 are

-Shawshank Redemption
-Apocalypse Now
-Cool Hand Luke
-Lawrence of Arabia
-Scent of a Woman

I am confused by how people are claiming "horrible acting" from Sam Worthington in Avatar. Granted hes not Daniel Day Lewis but I think he conveyed emotion very well in Avatar. Some of the cheesy lines were due to the script. I never once had a moment where I felt his delivery was not in tune with the character. For instance when he comes from the link bay and we see his scrawny legs and he has come back to reality how could you not feel bad for him, his composure in scenes like that is ACTING. I think people are confusing some of the cheesy dialogue he is saying as to his acting. Just my 2 cents.

Fair enough.

All Batman Begins and Dark Knight did, was feel like they were Batman inspired cosplayers in a crappy crime drama. That's not my Batman and will never be my Batman.
If you acknowledged all (or even some) of the good things about TDK and still said you didn't like it, I could respect that. But you are unable to do so because it's "not my Batman", which is not much of an analysis. Likewise, saying that Avatar is the best movie ever without acknowledging any of its faults doesn't give much credence to your statement.

Well I supported Avatar and contributed to its billions, by watching it in IMAX 3D, by buying the BD, and by recommending that others see it despite its flaws. That doesn't mean I feel it is well-written.

That's pretty lazy, Beast.

As many have already said, it is okay to have an old story if it is told in a fresh manner. Here are some of the some unique takes in the movie.

1. The Avatar plot device: This is a really cool concept - the idea of controlling a body distinct from your own via technology. Granted, not entirely unique but certainly never explored in such detail and given the emotionally genuine twist of being a paraplegic that cannot walk or run with your original body.

2. The unique setting: Strange exotic planets have been done ad nauseum but Pandora is a unique planet with its own fleshed-out biosphere. Everything from the bioluminescent plants to the flying creatures is spectacular and we have not seen them used in such a cohesive fashion before.

3. The conflicted scientist: Well there is a scientist in just about every sci-fi movie but Weaver's character was authentic in ways most of them are not. Many are either data-gatherers or explorers or evil manipulators etc. etc. Weaver was a conflicted character who was trying to accomplish something new and fantastic for an urgent and moral purpose but found herself caught between two conflicting parties that each had meaning to her. It was a haunting dilemma and the way she ultimately surrendered was actually quite moving.

4. The action: We've all seen hundreds of action movies before and this one definitely set new standards with unique, thrilling action sequences. Enough said.

That's for starters, and this is from someone who thinks the script was weak and the dialogue poorly written. Imagine how much better this movie could have been if all the negatives were done well!

Oh I totally agree. I love big blow-out movies more than anything. But don't try to pretend they are more than they are.

And I don't care if a plot, characters, etc are original, but I love to see something original DONE with them, if you follow me.

But there is nothing good about TDK. It's a terrible movie in my opinion.

My analysis is that it doesn't come close to a satisfying Batman film.

As for Avatar. I don't see any faults. I thought it was one of the best movies ever made.

I can't find words to express how much I disagree with this...
