This may seem weird, but we are planning a DIY, very slightly curved, acoustically transparent screen with fabric by Seymour AV. It will be 10 feet wide for 2.39:1, which would be about 45 degrees in our room. The fabric bought for DIY is so inexpensive (compared to a pre-made screen) that the only thing that stopped us from designing a 60 to 80 degree screen is that our experiments indicate that the typical BD won't support it. Screens in 70 mm theaters we are familiar with can easily cut off this angle, and even much larger. 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70 mm can survive about 150 degrees, as we repeatedly found out in '68 by trying it. SOoooooo .... As our home front projection screens get larger, and as Blu-ray is superceded by something of higher definition (say, 4 to 8k), wouldn't we get to the point when we would want digital movies shot in 4 to 8K, i.e., approaching the resolution of 70 mm, so we can replicate the size we used to see in the theater, or that we see now in IMAX, vertically, anyway? There are certain films that would look great at that size!
It's all got to do with viewing distance. I don't personally fell as if there's much advantage of going beyond 2k. But I don't like the massive imax screen and prefer to sit 1.5 screenhights away from the screen.

Default Thx...

Normally, the THX sequence at the start of movies kind of annoys me - I'll be honest.

But the THX sequence at the end of Avatar sounded and looked amazing. I actually replayed it twice... Then I ran & grabbed my wife to have her hear it. It was really cool. Anyone catch it?

no, it's at the end and it is something to behold, you'll want to crank the audio for this, it will rattle the whole house!

oh yeah, why wait until november, you'll probably lose more money out of your pants pocket than the movie will cost and of course you know the world will probably end at the end of october!

Yeah... It was fantastic.

That's why I specifically mentioned the "end" of Avatar - to make sure people wouldn't have missed it.

My wife was getting ready for bed & asked me "what are you watching now?"

The point is I made up my own mind, but sounds like you didn't see all of it (if you only saw an hour, you didn't even see half), and were content in going against the hype for the sake of it

I agree the movie is a 'phenomenon' because of its box office, though people do seem to be forgetting that due to the 3D nature of the film, ticket prices were more expensive and thus may overstate the amount of people that actually saw it. If it had been in 2D with standard prices, it may have done incredibly well, but I'm not convinced it would've beaten Titanic.

And it is an achievement that it's based on no previous material (not quite the same as calling it 'original' because it contains more film/character cliches than the 'unoriginal' Dark Knight or LOTR which are also in the top 10). However, again this doesn't mean I have to think it is THAT amazing. It's better than Titanic, but no GWTW, ET, LOTR.
YOUR list at the bottom of epic movie rankings is comical LOL. "Call the Oscars Nametag has spoken"

I actually lost interest in the movie and started not paying attention at about 1:45 min or so when i started putzing around the house. Was there a mind blowing ending with a twist.....? yeah didnt think so.

Yes and the audio codec changed to 7.1. So if you have a 7.1 set up, this sounded even better!!

From what I remember hearing is that they decided to make this release using the whole if not most of the disc data space to make the transfer SUPPPPURRRBBBBBB for the blu and decided to NOT include anythign But the movie. Then in nov release it again but this time adding the extra's. Like I said I could be worng but that's what I remember reading somehwere, (I think)

If this is true, I;m waiting, I like extra's

they pay for it to be tested and if passed then certification is granted and they have the right to have the logo on their gear. if they just randomly tested and "granted" the THX logo with no charge, they would be broke! and who would want to pay for something they didn't ask for in the first place?

This part of my post was kind of a response to other people saying that it being so huge means it is a masterpiece - It wasn't 'my' list, they are just examples of other top grossing films of all time... None of them are any of my absolute favourite films.

I was just comparing it to other huge movies, and saying that just because it's the 'hugest' I don't have to think it is THAT good. And that just because it is not based on any previous material, that doesn't mean it has achieved more than those huge films which were.
