I think mpeg2 was the codec that people were complaining about before. I remember hearing that blu-ray dvds were going to be changed to another codec for better quality. Has that been done yet?
I just ordered MI:III blu-ray. Does anyone know what video codec was used? What should I expect? Thanks! |

People were complaining out of ignorance. It was never the use MPEG-2, but the bit-rate, masters and care with encoding that were at fault.
There are great quality titles out now in all three codecs (MPEG-2, AVC, and VC-1). Mission Impossible-3 is MPEG-2, and I think pretty much every review says it is on par with their VC-1 version for HD DVD. And everyone is gushing about Black Hawk Down, a Sony title. Gary |

A good comparison besides M-3 is Four Brothers (MPEG-2) vs hd dvd (VC-1) version.
The BD looks slightly sharper and just as clean looking as the great looking hd dvd version. Also the best facial details IMO for either format are found on BHD and Tears of the Sun....and there both MPEG-2. |

It's my first time posting, but don't forget about D-VHS. It used MPEG2 codec and just about all the D-VHS movies looked damn near great!

D-Theater titles were MPEG-2 at a CB ≈ 24mbps from a 1080i60 source with no telecine flags and encoded in real time. BD can be encoded with MPEG-2 using a non real time encoder with VBR and multi pass. So if the source is great then a BD with MPEG-2 can/should be great also (equal/exceed D-Theater).

That's the problem though, We haven't been able to beat out video tape! I understand the D-VHS format is a dead media, but because of real time HD recording that would make it a superior format?
