Yes. Component can carry 1080P, whether his TV supports it or not is a different story.

Wikipedia says component can do 1080p. Take that for what it's worth... (I have no issues believing what is on wikipedia for articles such as this).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compone...omponent_video HOWEVER, I am under the impression that Blu-Ray players can/do limit component video output to 1080i... I suppose I could do more research and give a better answer, but I'm late. |

Component video connection certainly has the bandwidth to carry 1080P signal. Remember, in the days when component switching was a hot feature on receivers, they proudly featured lables confirming they were supporting 1080P switching as well.
Now, whether the 1080P signal is allowed through component interface because of content protection - that's a different question. |

.....component video connections have the bandwidth for 1080p but due to the fact that they are 'analog' connections & as such aren't 'encrypted' there are no HD players, including the PS3, that are allowed by 'the powers that be' to transmit 1080p hd video (ie, movies on disc....proprietary games may be a different beast)....max res over component on PS3 is 1080i, period. HDMI, which supports data encryption, allows 1080p signal transmission.

Don't bump it up to 1080p. I tried that and it actually lowered the resolution to 480.. <barf> If he doesn't have HD component input, the only benefit is he stops wasting money on DVD, gets a cleaner transfer, and "future proofs" his collection until he gets a new TV. I have to use Component from my PS3 to my Sony KV-34XBR800 because even though it has a DVI input, the PS3 connected via HDMI to DVI does not show a picture. The TV is HDCP compliant, but it still does not work.
My TV is also a 1080i set. The picture quality is awesome through the Component connection. No worries here. Tell him to buy the PS3 and the Sony Component cable and don't look back till it's time for a new TV. |

While we wait for my dad's hdmi to dvi thingee to arrive in the mail, we've been using component to some impressive results. But there isn't any doubt in my mind that the better connection is hdmi (hopefully there won't be any black-screen issues, since I do believe the tv is compliant).

No. Sony has no answer either from their gaming (PS3) side or their electronics (TV) side.
I've been through the ringer with both to no avail. The PS3 automatically detects the HDMI connection on my Vizio 32" bedroom TV, so I know it's not the PS3. The 34XBR800 also works fine via HDMI to DVI with my Directv HR20 DVR. I gave up and hopefully in a few years when I end up getting a new TV I won't have to worry about it. |

Actually, many people tend to think analog 1080i component looks as good if not better than HDMI.

A lot of that has to do with the CRT's pretty much 2nd to none black reproduction. |
