wow!
the US is more open for hddvd due to a)zealots and b)toshiba giving away huge amounts of disks and players for no profit, only speculating that they will make back the money in future |

HD DVD PRG knows that whoever wins in the US wins the world. This is the only fight that matters but it is also their last stand. All their financial resources are brought to bear in this fight in the US, so it is important to never underestimate their capabilities or you could prolong this war unnecessarily.
Otoh, moves that destroy your ability to make a viable business out of future players are overreactions that hurt your format in the long run, so overestimating them too much would also be a self inflicted wound. If we look at player sales numbers in the next two months after this widely known $98 sale, I think a simple pattern will emerge based on very simple common sense. Noone will pay more for something when he thinks it is worth significantly less, so the $198 price is no longer going to move HD-A2s, they have to try 130 or 129, and Toshiba and their backer would have to be determined to lose a ton of real money other than virtual promotion dollars to keep doing this. The next time they have a $98 sale, they will sell less, and the time after that they'll have to go below $98. At some point, the value of HD DVD player will be perceived to be the same as an upscaling DVD player. |

why blue-ray is going so well is only due to the sale off the play station 3. i have 2 friends who have this unit and they dont care about blue-ray movies only about the gaming side.

However, as always, PS3 has proven to be the dark horse. Just because those fine people in Norway don't care too much about HDM right now, they do like to play their games and have bought the PS3. Now, while they probably didn't get their PS3 for movies, a portion of them are buying them. Either way, when we are talking total HDM sales under 100k, Norway is really just a small blip in the BD/HD-DVD race and will probably have no impact at all on the outcome. Kinda funny how Toshiba selling 100k units in a couple days means nothing, but holy **** - Norway favors Blu ray - time to celebrate. ![]() This does show the power (or potential power) of the PS3 though. The more PS3s in homes (regardless the initial reason for the purchase) will mean more BD sales. |

because HD-DVD is region free that is the problem. The ps3 is the key everywhere ells where the market is so low. US market where Hollywood is, is the most important. So many people buy movies over Internet from usa, that reflect in sales over there.

Up in Canada, we never got that Hundred Dollar HD-DVD player deal, and from what I've seen, especially when i used to sell blu-ray adn HD-DVD's, blu-ray is outselling them by a lot, when i go into sotres like walmart, future shop, i see their HD-DVDs stacked upto god only knows where, but tehy're in the back because they can't sell the ones in the front. the Blu-rays, i actually had some that i couldn't keep on the shelf because they went so fast (casino royale especially).
So..i dunno...but it looks pretty swayed towards Blu-ray, atleast in BC, and everybody in Canada knows We westerners are competely different than the east Also, E-Dogg is right, the american dollar has come down, the Canadian Dollar is higher than it now, but that's not only because the american dollar came down, our dollar became stronger, Compared to the GBP. This why so many of Us come down there to do some shopping! I know I am, Get me the Masters of Horror Series for about $30 cheaper down there, and also need a camera, and some other things Last edited by hardcore_canadian; 11-10-2007 at 05:30 AM. |
