I read a review on Amazon stating that these films have been cropped. Is this true? I believe they were originally filmed in 2.35:1.

If you are talking about this review:

Unfortunately for film purists, this version appears to do what a lot of Blu Ray discs do:crop the movie to fit your big screen TV. Both these movies were filmed in a 2.35:1 widescreen format, but this disc advertises 1.77:1, which means you lose the original composition the director intended. Better to go with the regular DVD version, which presents the film in the original aspect ratio. This is particularly recommended if you are using a projector, since projectors currently don't pick up the subtleties of Blu Ray anyway.

The guy never bought the discs. He/she is going by Amazon.com's listing of:

See Post #46 for the back cover for this set. Matter of fact, that reviewer even mistakenly believes that Blu-ray Disc releases are modified to fill 1.78:1 displays. The reviewer also states at the end of the review:

So you are taking the word of an uninformed customer who wants to spread misinformation.

Here is the review that contradicts it:

Just finished watching "Kelly's Heroes" - The film looks TERRIFIC, not like a NEW RELEASE, but for a film shot in 1968 it looks GREAT. It is in WIDE SCREEN - 1080p HIGH Definition 16x9 2.4:1 - bars on the top & the bottom.
I compared it to my standard def version, which actually looks quite good, and I couldn't see much difference aspect ratio wise. The quality is good (like somebody took some WINDEX and cleaned the print - not a great upgrade, but I just had to have it - NO REGRETS, its a great movie. ( The second half of the movie LOOKS REALLY GOOD!!!)

I have never owned a copy of "Where Eagles Dare". The film looks GREAT both in PICTURE QUALITY & CONTENT.

I have just purchased a Where Eagles Dare Blu ray in England . I am very very disappointed. In my opinion it is no better than my DVD copy.
This Blu ray only contains Where Eagles Dare so different from the 2 film US release?
It seems to me that the producers have used the same print as was released on DVD. No effort seems to have been made to clean it up or remaster.
I fail to understand why such a good film has been released in this way. What a waste of time and money!!

We have a major difference of opinion, because I thought it looked quite good and a giant leap better than my DVD copy. Was it reference? Absolutely not. Was it worth the money I laid down for it!? Absolutely!

If you feel the way you do, then you must not be happy with a lot of your movies.

The image to me on the Disc from the US release seems to be on par with the way it should look with out digital manipulation that usually ruins films bu doing reduction of grain to destroy detail.

The film doesn't look like a PIXAR production to be sure but it does look filmlike to me. Yes their is grain more scenes than others, the film never seemed to look outstanding, but I understand a restoration would maybe be in order although as it stands at least they didn't tinker around with the image.

It is one of my favs... but it deserved it's own release with cooler cover art in the same line as the classic poster artwork. these photoshopped hack jobs from these studios are getting on my last nerve.

And who created the whole look of the WB double feature designs? They look so generic I wonder if some consumers dont think they are public domain filler.

I am happy with most of my Blu Rays. I recently purchased North By Northwest and it is stunning. Similarly Dirty Harry is much much better than the DVD and The Dam Busters is absolutely amazing.

Just got through with Where Eagles Dare and I was rather impressed. Grain was intact and no DNR was applied. There was of course a small amount of dirt on the print and the effects shots were much more evident, but other than those two things it was a solid presentation.

Maybe the US version is different to the one released in England, because my copy is def not so good!
Friends have looked at it and agree.
Oh well, I'll just have to wait for a remastered BD to be issued over here

Are the UK releases for these two films region free? I looked around but couldn't find a definite answer, even looked at the back cover image and there is no region coding mentioned. If these are region free and the exact same as the US discs then I'd like to import them, if anyone has a definite answer please let me know.

Watched Kelly's Heroes last night and felt that it looked slightly better than Where Eagles Dare. I still think $20 is the perfect price for this double feature.
