I'd say 3-5 hits given the nationals used their hitting to get Stras a win lol they should be inconsistent for awhile now

Just like with amazing tv/car deals same goes for autographs if its too good to be true it probably is.

I just hate spending 300+ on stuff only to see if he bombs it'll be like Prior and Wood where you can get their authentic autos for under 30 each lmao
I have a friend who owns a football signed by Ryan Leaf. Ya.... THAT Ryan Leaf. I think he spent around $150+ for it back when the guy was drafted by the Chargers. He actually still has it prominently displayed as a sort of joke. Just saying, even if Strasburg became a bust it might still be amusing to own.

Hopefully he's past that.

That was a terrible draft year I was just giddy with excitement when he fell out of the top 3 and had hoped either him or kershaw would fall to the O's but neither did
I'm really curious to see if the Nationals get some carry over in higher attendance tonight and into the future.

I have a few autographed balls, but I don't see them as investments, more of just for fun. My aunt was an auditor for a big bank in NYC back in '96, and a few of the players had scheduled visits at the bank a day or two after the World Series. She was able to get two balls signed by Girardi and Leyritz (poor guy) for me, but missed out on Strawberry.

I have balls signed by Mattingly and Jeter as well, which I got through people with minor connections to the Yankees front office.

Anyhow, I used to collect baseball cards a lot as a kid, and one series that came along by Donruss called Signature Series, in which every pack had an autographed card in it (though they cost $15-20 a pack). The trick was that most of the time you'd get an autograph from some bum nobody heard of, but there were some good ones mixed in.

The color of the background on the card also indicated it's rarity, so I managed to get a Scott Rolen autograph, on the rarest colored card, which was worth about $300 at the time the series came out. This was back in '97.

So I took the card to a local card show a few weeks later, and traded it to some guy for a crapload of Derek Jeter cards (some guy on the Yankees that apparently had some potential). The guy used a card guide to show me the cards he was trading me were worth a total of about $400.

Basically, he was betting that Rolen would pan out better than Jeter, but it seems like I won. I still have all of my cards stored in boxes back at my parents' house, including the 15-20 Jeter cards the guy traded me.

You can get that Rolen card for about $20-30 now. I'm not sure what the Jeter ones are worth, but I imagine at least as much as the Rolen one.

I still have many thousands of sports cards stashed away in my bedroom closet from when I was younger. Most are between the the late 1980's-mid 1990's andm ost are baseball or basketball. Guess I'll leave them alone for another decade before looking up their value.

Funny story, I got into bowling in the early 90's and actually bought my first quality bowling ball for $170 by selling a Chris Webber refractor basketball card I pulled from a $5 pack of basketball cards.

Probably my favorite collectible I still own are my complete sets of 1992 Dream Team basketball figures. I bought three sets for about $15/each and last I checked they were worth about $160/each in their current unopened boxes. I plan on holding onto those for many more years.

I also still own several items including a basketball autographed by Karl Malone, who is a family friend.

Yeah mine isn't really an investment per say but I don't wanna spend a ton on Clemons exc. only to see it fall of a cliff due to depreciation, But I have plenty of sets of autos that I just bought to match up the series or w/e

I had a lot of fun collecting baseball cards, spending whatever allowance/birthday/Christmas money I had on packs of cards.

Around the time I finished up high school (a few years after I stopped collecting), the trend seemed to be to put pieces of jerseys/balls/bats/bases on every card they could find, which seemed to ruin the fun of getting a rare card. I used to be thrilled to see some hologram, but that has nothing on getting a piece of Babe Ruth's jersey. Oh well.

At some point I might sell off all my cards, but I don't know if they'll go up in value or just go down. It seems like their value is largely related to demand, and I feel like card collecting as a hobby is disappearing.

Recently I was at a toy store shopping for a birthday gift, and I saw some of the McFarlane baseball figures in one of the aisles. The collector in me saw the fun in collecting some of those, but the cost could add up fast (I think they're about $13 each). I was thinking of picking up a few to just put on a shelf in one of my rooms, but only of the players I like (Posada, Ruth, Jeter, etc). Two of the coolest ones I've seen online are the Rivera and Gehrig ones.

Apparently there are variations McFarlane puts into them, to make certain ones rare (for example, a Red Sox one might be rare if the player has the red alternate jersey on... an older Babe Ruth one had a sepia-toned variant that was rare, etc).

My rant for the day! I went to see my grandparents today and I looked at the local paper and see the NBA Finals top headline in the sports section! I don't give 2 cuss about the NBA Finals! The Rays should of been the headline with the butt kicking they gave the Jays last night! I'd understand if the Magic was in the Finals, but c'mon, we don't live in LA or Boston!

Rays/Jays in about 12 minutes!

I agree they really flooded the market with autographs exc. I guess trying to make people feel special the good thing about all that though is I figured a good box of cards is about 100 bucks why would I spend that and risk getting Matt Albers rookie card autograph when I can go on ebay find a powerseller and get a good/great players auto for around that... One reason I moved to ebay exc. because it was a joke buying a box and getting some minor leaguer for a $150 box.... I did get the #1 pick in 2005 for a football box I got my adrenaline was pumping.

Guess the hobby isn't dying too much

I know you are a huge Rays fan, but an NBA finals game is going to get much more media coverage than a regular season baseball game. And it should. The better question is which would get more media coverage, the NBA Finals or the World Series if they were played at the same time?

Pirates load the bases for Lastings Milledge in the top of the 1st...and he pops out in foul ground

Jose Tabata hit a hot shot to the shortstop in his first major league at bat, and it was ruled a base hit

It's weird seeing people in the majors that are younger than me, but I guess as each year goes by, there will be more and more.

I remember seeing Andrew Miller at UNC, and in 2006 he pitched in both the College and MLB World Series, which has to make him one of the few to appear in both in the same year. He's been pretty mediocre in the MLB though.

Nationals catcher and future HOF'er Ivan Rodriguez signed his first MLB contract within a month of Strasburg's birth in 1988.

Brad Lincoln is pitching very well in his MLB debut. Lincoln has given up 5 runs in 5 2/3 so far, but that really doesn't sum up how the night has gone. The Pirates defense has been completely awful...but the blunders they have had in the field have not been scored errors, therefore being put on Lincoln's back. Tabata is playing lights out tonight in his debut, he is 2/3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.

The game is tied at 5 in the bottom of the 6th

David Price (you know... that "other" #1 overall pick) is lights out yet again. Soon to be 9-2 with an ERA of 2.24.
