Any thoughts on height? Are 2x4s + the MDF thickness good enough? |

can i ask you folks something... basically the idea here is that the gramma / subdude stuff doesn't have enough material for the price to raise your sub high enough off the ground?

I would say that is one way too look at it abc5 . I have had all my subs in different places & at different heights & the higher up the better they sound IMO.

Well the Gramma and Subdude are more of an isolation pad than a riser. Just getting the sub off the ground is a good thing, but if they raised the sub off the ground a lot higher, than they would be much more effective in interacting with the room modes

this does pose a new situation for me... i was going to get a gramma, put my Hsu on it, then slide both underneath a audio rack i was going to buy that had an open bottom, (and not install the lowest shelf).... if i rise the sub up substantially i cant get away w/ this. is a down firing sub to be risen differently? |

How High a Riser? Theoretically, if your ceiling is 8ft high, you can go up to 2 feet. However, when you raise it that high, you should really fill the gap under the riser with dampening foam. Take a look at these SubTraps from ASC. darn, i have 12foot ceiling. i could raise my hsu vtf2mk3 up to 3 feet max? |

About a foot is more than enough. You can hang your subwoofers from the ceiling, but do it at your own risk. The WAF is waiting. ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() So I see you are still trying to get someone to hang their sub from the ceiling ![]() ![]() I have one raised 14" & one at 19" & one at 28 " ~ Is that a bad thing ![]() |

![]() One of these days, I am going to hang a very heavy subwoofer from the ceiling. Hopefully, others will learn from my courage and follow my intiative. We can start a new thread on the benefits of hanging subwoofers from the ceiling. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I disagree with you. crazyBlue is from Portland, OR. The only WAF that applies to him is World Action Foundation.

EDIT: Aerodude73 & HAMP, I guess you missed the whole point of crazyBlue's post. He knows the meaning of WAF. He was just being funny and sarcastic. So I gave him a funny and sarcastic response. He has been playing the WAF joke on me before. Last edited by Big Daddy; 06-24-2010 at 03:24 AM. |

so back to the questions
![]() does a riser platform need to be built, or just find 4 posts that can serve as 4 legs as long as they can be screwed into the bottom of the sub, acting like 4 long spikes? i'm seeing pics of a custom riser, plus long pegs on the sub replacing standard spikes...are both necessary? |

i have a question about this... if some foam or acoustic foam will help the riser due better dampening, would the foam be better off instead of being underneath the mdf/plywood platform as i've seen, be placed on top of the platform, then carpeted or whatever.... it would make the top more spongy, but they sell high density foam that's really firm... and you can put those coins at the bottom of each of your sub spikes so the spikes dont punch through over time. |
