This thread needs to be pinned as it is, after all, the greatest movie in the history of the 3rd dimension.

This is what I found on the blu-ray.com review of Dune:

Quote:
All of the SD extras of the Extended Edition SD-DVD have been ported over to this Blu-ray release:

Deleted Scenes (17:18) features several jettisoned segments, and includes an interesting introduction by producer Raffaella De Laurentiis, who dispels the notion that there was a mythical four hour version of Dune that never made it to the screen.

Designing Dune (8:54) talks about the multi-culturalism of the production design team.

Dune FX (6:00) details some of the 800 effects shot, some rather groundbreaking in their day, which augment the film.

Dune Models and Miniatures (7:01). Remember the days before CGI? If you don't, watch this featurette for a little insight into what it used to take to make a sci-fi film.

Dune Costumes (4:49) interviews designer Bob Ringwood and his staff about the 9,000 costumes needed for the film.

Bookmarking via My Scenes, BD Live and D Box are also available.

I own both the HD DVD and BD and they are about the same even though the HD DVD has DD+ and the BD has DTS-HD Master Audio. I can also verify that the master that was used for the 2006 DVD (theatrical cut) was also used for both the HD DVD and BD. I personally would rate the PQ and AQ about 8/10 each with a slight edge towards the PQ.

Dune is a classic scifi flick.

Alot of peeps are turned off by the religious undertones of the movie but, isnt nearly every flick?

The CGFX are dated but its ok, the movie's story is superb and the PQ is decent and the AQ is primo.

I have it in my library and dont regret it at all.

I haven't bought this in Blu yet.

I'm really happy with my special edition, director's cut steelbook DvD.

Is it worth it for just a remastered theatrical cut in you opinion folks???

Belive me...I only need half a reason to pull the trigger on this one.

Yes, I just watched this a couple of weeks ago. The DTS track is alone worth the upgrade. The picture quality is better than the HD-DVD. If you are a Dune fan, grab it.

I'm keeping my steelbook dvd with the extended cut, btw.

The picture quality is identical on both HD DVD and the BD. Sorry to bust your bubble.

Hi,

They're having a 2 for $20 deal at Best Buy and I know I want to get Darkman but the only other movie I was considering is Dune.

I was wondering what people's opinions are on it.

I, personally, think it's great.
I think the only thing wrong with it is the animated Spiderman-style voice over they do for Paul Atreides, here and there.

I think it's one of Lynch's better films. It actually scared the crap out of me, when I was a kid.
Especially considering the fact that George Lucas borrowed so much from the original Dune novel(s), I think Lynch did a great job translating Dune without making it appear too much like Star Wars.

I think you should buy it. Especially for that cheap.

While you're at it, check this link out: http://www.duneinfo.com/unseen/
It's got a lot of in-depth info about all of the different versions of the movie that almost got made, before Lynch made his. From A.P. Jacobs (Planet of the Apes, Dr Doolittle, Play it Again Sam) to Alejandro Jodorowsky (Holy Mountain, El Topo, Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant Magazine) to Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Legend, etc). A lot of sweet stuff, there.
Each story about each version of Dune that was supposed to happen kind of creates all sorts of alternate visions, in your imagination, and you wonder what each one would have been like.
The site also has a bunch of PDFs of the first seven drafts of Lynch's script for the movie.

Not yet, sounds like a lot of people think the effects look so fake that they would be quite horrible in HD.

I have the HD DVD version of the film and it's a really good remaster. They usually just port them over for the blu version so it should be fine and on the way eventually.

I like the mini as well. A lot of the secondary characters have a lot more to do. Irulan actually has a bigger story than in the book. Duncan is much truer to the novel. They dont have the silly weapons with sound. I do miss Jurgen Prochnow and Patrick Stewart however. And the movie has a better sound track.
