no, not yet - & will do when I watch it.

Went to see RUSH last nite at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut btw - AMAZING SHOW; We just snagged tix yesterday too, lower arena, opposite the stage, just a bit to the right of center, great seats, view, sound was excellent. Almost 3 hours total (small intermission between their 2 sets), 2nd set opened with the ENTIRE "MOVING PICTURES" album. Unbelievable Light shot for that section. I was just to the right of the Audio/Lighting board area, and saw their Lighting Director (Howard Underleiger) before the show started talking with people there. He's been with them since they started in 74'. So after the show ended, I went down & shook his hand, told him what a great job he did, and we'd see them in Boston (Sept. 14th). Can't wait.

Hello. I was thinking of getting the PA-120 after reading how wonderful it is. My question is.. is it overkill to have it in my small room size of 10x11? Seems like I may be missing out on how a really good sub sounds like.

I will. I've had a couple of sound systems before this, but all using DVD discs and $200 all-in-one systems from Wal-Mart with 150 watt subs that distort most of their output.

I'll be using the 5 all-in-one speakers for this new system (+ 2 rather large 15 year old RCAs to complete the 7) for the time being until my reserves are replenished enough for me to get better speakers.

Any suggestions for a first movie? I'm considering King Kong. My collection is just a click away

I think you will ejoy it even in a small room.

It will shake your room! Of course - sound (bass) travels so it may disrupt others in connecting rooms. This is a serious bass at the right moments.

It's not always shaking the house (cept on U571). On many movies it's just the big action scenes, etc.

King Kong? Nope! Don't get me wrong, the king's growl is awesome and cool. But, if you must, then the sauropod stampede while fleeing from the meanest velociraptors I have ever laid eyes on is even better. Then el stupido fires a rife at the sauropods thus wounding the first of many. That was an extremely dumb scene of course. I was surprised that PJ even let it go, but the sound was cool as they piled up one upon another. But really, there are better subwoofer testing Blu-ray movies. I will admit that the sauropod stampede had potential. However, it seems to me after listening to it many times, that the sound engineers filtered the low bass somewhere around 24 Hz or in 25 Hz to 30 Hz range. There is clearly something missing there. It was rather disappointing to me because it would have really sounded great had it not been filtered. Another movie that has disappointing bass is the cannon fire in Master and Commander FSOTW blu-ray which also has a similar bass filter.

If I were you get Spielberg's War of the Worlds on Blu-ray if you want to hear what real, unfiltered ultra low bass sounds like. Your PA 120 won't be a virgin sub after you watch the pod emerging from the street scene. Another good BD is Hell Boy II, the scene called the Forest God which is similar to the WOTW pod emergence scene but just doesn't quite have the 10 Hz subwoofer killing ultra low bass. Don't worry your PA 120 has a built-in subsonic filter at 18 Hz. So it likely won't be damaged unless you try to push it way too hard.

In Dark Knight, I love the hospital scene - that shakes the house! It's quite a nice subwoofer workout!

Yes, that's one of my favorite subwoofer demos too. It's spectacular. I also like the parking garage scene after the bank heist event near the beginning where the bat mobile tank like thingy smashes through the wall and fires at Scarecrow and his mafia buddies.

Hi there,

So I have a quick question. As you see from my sig, I currently have an 80 dollars polk sub. While I don't have the resources to upgrade right away, I do like to plan upgrades a ways down the line, and after reading all the superlatives about the PA 120s, right now it is the frontrunner for the new sub when the time comes.

Now, my question is this: if I got a PA 120, would it be worth keeping my polk around as a second sub? Would it just muddy the sub waters or would it help fill out the sound field?

Please keep in mind I live in an apartment, and not really even much of a bass junkie. I just like my music and movies detailed and full.

Thanks for your help!

Once you buy a better subwoofer, I suggest that you keep your Polk sub and use it as a midbass driver. You won't be able to sell it for much.

Put the better and bigger sub up front in a corner about a foot or a little more away from the side walls to avoid making it too boomy. Put the Polk sub closer to your sofa/seat. Adjust their levels carefully so that each gives you approximately the same level of output. You don't want one sub to overpower the onther one. Once you have calibrated your two subs properly, the sub up front will provide you with deeper bass and the sub closer to you will provide you with higher bass output. The bass should become fairly even across the room and you will most probably live in bass heaven. The only thing missing is a big party and you should invite all of us.

I have to warn you that our ears are more sensitive to upper bass frequencies than the lower bass frequencies. We feel the lower frequencies. We generally don't hear them as well.

That might be tough to keep both (with your living in an Apartment ). I'd try to sell it for what you can, & use that for a 2nd PA-120 (down the line a bit maybe, if/when you move maybe). But to your point, if that option is a ways off, you could "try" to see what keeping the Polk sub has to offer. Obviously the PA-120 Sub will be your Main Workhorse, & you can try to use the smaller less powerful Polk-PSW10 to "compliment" bass response. If it works for YOUR listening environment, great. If you find it under-performing & or being blown away in performance by the PA-120, then you could try what I wrote above, & sell it until you are able to add a 2nd PA-120 Sub.

** Edit: Below is the for Contact Info for "ERIC WINSTON" at Sound Distributors. Send him an email - or call him if you wish - & ask if they might be having a Promotion on the PA-120. He'll prob. give you a "Code" to use when ordering your Sub. It "was" at one time "tv15" or something; & that will give you an additional 15% off your total - essentially wiping away the Shipping Costs (I did this for Both my PA-120 Subs, & they each ended up costing $223.65 TOTAL) **

Thanks for the response. I decided to put the sub on hold. Will be upgrading the other speakers first. On a side note, the "tv15" code still works. I just tried it.

Thanks for great feedback guys. I'll have to wait until September to see if my contract is renewed, but if so hopefully I can get the next round of upgrades before the new year.

Cheers!

Just wanted to drop in and post. Had this sub for awhile now and still love it. We watched Monsters Inc. last night and I had it pretty cranked for "family movie night". Boo laughed, I could feel resulting power surge through the couch- it sounded epic. I said, "Whoah" and my wife, who was sitting on the floor turned and said, "You should've felt it from down here!" with a big grin on her face.

The initial WAF factor may be a tough sell, but this sub continues to perform at a really reasonable price. I am still just as if not more satisfied with it as the day I got it. And my family is too.

Can't recommend this one enough if you're looking for a budget performer.

Any owner names I'm missing please PM me or just post in the thread that you have it. I usually wait till folks have it in-hand to add them, so if yours is shipping just let me know when you get it.

Aramis,

Thanks for recommending this Sub and creating/maintaining this thread.

I bought the sub, partly from your input and many others experience with it. I'm also very happy with it and it almost gets better with time (is that possible).

One mod I may make is to build a sub stand like the subdude, etc to "disconnect" it from the floor.

Man this can shake the house!

Yea, I've heard that movie wasn't up to snuff unfortunately. I'll NETFLIX it some day, mainly to see how the Audio (& of course, the LFE) sounds. --- RAMBO has an Excellent 7.1 DTS-HD MA Audio track, so watch that during the day too. Sadly, to me & many others, it's really a Short film. I think the credits Start rolling at around the 83-84 minute mark!!! (the new "Extended Cut" only adds a few minutes from what I've read - *** EDIT: The original 2008 Bluray "says" 91 minutes & the new release says 100 minutes. Might be 91 mins. for the original, but that's with 7-8 mins. of credits then; Short film). To me, any type of Good Action type flick HAS to be 100+ Minutes at least.
