It's called deferred compensation.

The Mets really hosed themselves in their deal with Bobby Bonilla in 2000. Instead of buying out his contract for around $6M, they agreed to string out the buyout in the form of annual payments from 2011-2035 of over $1M per year.

Maybe $1M per season doesn't seem like as big of a chunk as the $6M lump sum, but it's still $25M+ versus $6M.

Haha I read that too about Bonilla. $1 mill per year for like 25 years. It's like he won the lottery.

I think something like that happened with the Knicks and Allen Houston too. I believe he was still getting paid for years after he left the team and retired.

It's ridiculous. There are so many rules for hitting the different parts of the ceiling at Tropicana you'd think they were playing stickball on a city street. Double if the ball goes in the sewer!

For just this year? The Red Sox are out of the race already. Unless they plan on resigning him it would make little sense to give up prospects for him with no chance of making the playoffs.

Actually, they are still hanging in there (by a thread though). If we take at least 3 out of the 4 games this weekend against them, then you can say they are done.

With their injury situation I really think you will take 3 or all 4. This Red Sox team reminds me of the 2008 Yankees. A lot of talent but it seems like every time they get hot they suffer another setback with injuries.
