JC recently did a couple of interviews around the web

Some stuff relevant for the upcoming Blu-Ray Special Editon:

The Extended Version will have more than 9 minutes of new footage, not 8, and all of it will be CG motion captured scenes that have recently been finished. Cameron says one of the new scenes, the one that takes place near the end, is the most impressive in the entire movie in terms of CG facial expression and emotion.

Cameron also said to MTV that a few days ago he went back to work on some of the deleted scenes for the upcoming Blu-Ray. He said they were "completed" but they needed a few more camera shots here and there to really be complete.

I wonder if some of the deleted scenes will be 100% finished as well...

Wait, so the new special edition coming in november will have extra 9 minutes just like the re-release in theatres?

If thats so and if they also do a steelbook for it, well, than I will double dip.

Yeah, the plan has always been for the Re-release version to also be in the upcoming Blu-Ray SE

Alright!

I assume that one is the
[Show spoiler]Tsu'tey euthanasia
scene.

Even if some are just 80% finished or thereabouts, I will be happy.

Thanks for the info.

- EDIT -

From Marketsaw:

- The AVATAR re-release will have 9 extra minutes, not 8 and it will all be CG. No extra footage of live action characters drinking coffee. Rainforest; some at night; a hunt sequence - a lot of flying; high impact action; an emotional scene toward the end has been added back; "the best CG in the film has been added as far as facial performance"; A Na'vi counterattack after the bulldozer attack; more of Grace at the school; adding the Stingbat and Sturmbeast creatures; additional Quaritch final AMP Suit battle shots; more of the glade love scene. It is all on par with the best of the rest of the film. They had lots of footage to choose from and they put back the absolute best scenes and shots they could.

- Cameron does not have the release timing of the 3D Blu-ray as they want to have a nice distribution of 3DTVs in homes. He has seen the 3D master run on consumer 3DTVs from Panasonic and Samsung and "It looks amazing. It looks really spectacular."

Having not seen it yet..... should I just wait for the re-release to hit Blu-ray before watching it..... or amongst the scenes that have been added.... is it all just "extra" for the really big fans.... and I should just put the first release in my Netflix queue now??? (I won't be going to the theater to see the new one, so don't use that as a basis to whether I should wait or not)

I think the best way to see this is in 3d , so at home or in the theater if you dont see it in 3d you are short changing yourself .

I recommend seeing the original version first before seeing the extended cut. That way you'll know whether or not you'll appreciate the additional scenes.

Personally, I hope Cameron adds in the Earth scenes at the beginning. There's some great stuff showing the air not being breathable (people walking around with air masks on) and paints a pretty grim picture of a possible future. Plus, it provides a powerful contrast to a paradise-like place like Pandora.

Also its only in Imax 3D and SELECT Real D 3D digital theatres.

so if you have a local theatre whos 3D system is Dolby Digital 3D or Xpand
you will have to venture out to a real D equiped theatre.

He isnt. The Earth opening is about 5 minutes long itself. Its will be on the Blu-Ray though. Maybe he will do an option where you can branch it into the movie? The Earth Scenes are pretty much complete anyways.

So far the scenes revealed to added to the SE are:

- Addition of the School Ruins scene in the jungle
- Addition of new animal, its introduction scene, the hunt scene involving it, and its involvement in the final battle
- Some extended Night Jungle sequences during Jakes training
- Addition of Navi attack on humans and more on the lead up to the destruction of the tree
- Extended battle sequence with Quaritch at the end
- Addition of an emotional scene at the end of the movie

Probably a few more things as well.

we have a couple of real d 3d theaters here but i bet none of them will have it on , I have a bad feeling that he dont care about putting this in theaters and just wants another version to sell on discs .

This really pisses me off. Does he not realize Avatar IS the 3D blu ray market? There's no other title that would push people to buy 3DTV's as much as Avatar. Seriously, how ignorant can they be? How many people are going to buy new TV's just for the few lackluster 3D titles that are out now?

There are 3D channels so i think that would be the main reason to buy + the 2D to 3D conversion capability, which isnt as good, but still fun to play with.

I thought they had already said the 3D blu was coming out this november ?

No. The Special Edition is (3-4 discs)

I dont think it makes sense for them to push 3D TVs until there are more 3D blu-rays on the market.

I think 2012 will be the perfect time to release Avatar on 3D blu and truly begin a push of 3D HDTVs, since there will also be more native 3D features ready to go on Blu, like Tron Legacy, Transformers 3 and Pirates4 and assorted animated films.

Honestly, the only explanation I can come up with is that they just want to keep milking Avatar as along as possible and get people to buy all the versions. It couldn't be that difficult to release Avatar in 3D now if they really wanted to.

Actually, I agree with Cameron on not putting it in at the beginning, even for a 'fan version' as I believe that it is perfect the way the movie's opening scenes work right now. However I would LOVE to see him include those Earth scenes into a flashback, like maybe when Jake is recording one of his video logs, as that would seem to be a somewhat logical and very easy spot to work it in.

But like I have said, I will just watch 'Blade Runner' right before viewing Avatar, if I feel an urge to include a 'wasted Earth' into my viewing experience of this film.

Well, if you haven't seen it yet, I say just wait and rent the 'Extended Edition' when it comes out in November which is not really that far away. Some of those added scenes seem really cool, but we will just have to wait and see.
