CC also has by far the highest-scoring offense supporting him, while Fernandez has by far the lowest-scoring offense, so the win-loss records are hard to compare. Olney said recent history has shown Cy Young voters are looking more at stats than win-loss and that could give Felix the edge.
Buchholz is 15-5, 2.21 ERA
Hernandez is 10-10, 2.38 ERA

I'd vote for Buchholz over Felix. He may not be as flashy but his numbers, aside from K's are better all-around. I'll bet Sabathia wins it though because of wins and the fact that he pitched for the Yankees.

I'm sorry but pitching value is not all sabermetrics. Of course a guy who gets no run support is going to pitch his ass off for every pitch of every inning. Sabathia has pitched very well, well enough to be in the position to win at least 19 times this year (not sure if any of his outings were blown). He has had the fortune of having great run support, and therefore does not need 110% effort when the game is 7-1. It's his job at that point to throw strikes and get the game over as quickly as possible; not to be all cutesy with his pitches.

I wonder what would happen if Hernandez ended the year with a sub .500 record, say 11-12. Would they still consider voting for him? W/L record definitely shouldn't be everything in determining the CY Young award, but you've got to draw the line somewhere. And for what it's worth, even with the huge disparity in NYY and SEA W/L records, Sabathia still has a higher percentage of his team's wins than Hernandez (22.3 to 19.2).

With that said, I would vote Buchholz right now, and then Sabathia, before I even thought about Hernandez... but we still have a good month left, and things may clear up a lot before the season is over.

No way they'd give it to a guy with a .500 or worse record. The closest example I can recall was one year when Randy Johnson had an outstanding 2.50'ish ERA but was only 16-14 with Arizona because the team had one of the worst records in MLB history and he had literally no run support. He ended up losing the voting for NL Cy Young badly to Roger Clemens who had a much better record but a much higher (something like 2.90) ERA. Johnson should have won the award hands down.

EDIT - Found it. Randy Johnson has 16 wins that year and the D-Backs finished with a 51-111 record. That's an astonishing nearly 1/3rd of the team's total wins.

I definitely remember that. I believe it was '04, which was the same year he threw his perfect game.

Our pitching staff is not as deep as I thought if they had to call up somebody today to start against Texas, at least we won.

Cliff Lee (back) was hoping to throw a bullpen session Saturday, but it didn't happen.
He was able to throw off flat ground, but evidently his back is not feeling well enough for him to throw from the bump. Lee could attempt again Sunday to throw from the mound. Unless he feels a lot better over the next 24 hours, it's looking very unlikely that the lefty will be able to start on Tuesday. Rich Harden would fill in if Lee is unable to take the ball. Sep. 4 - 2:39 pm et
Dang Cliff Lee is one frail pitcher.

That brings Morgan's total suspensions to 15 games. Good riddance.

Nyjer Morgan suspended for 8 games

Nyjer Morgan's wild week has landed him an eight-game suspension, one of nine punishments handed out Friday by Major League Baseball following a brawl between Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins.

MLB suspended Nationals outfielder Morgan and fined him an undisclosed amount for three separate incidents over the past week. Friday's penalty is in addition to a seven-game suspension he received Aug. 25 that is currently under appeal

Six players, both managers and a coach were cited after a review of Wednesday night's odd and ugly game in Miami, won 16-10 by the Marlins. Florida pitcher Chris Volstad was suspended for six games, pitcher Alex Sanabia for five, first baseman Gaby Sanchez for three, and manager Edwin Rodriguez for one. Volstad and Rodriguez also were fined, as was pitcher Jose Veras.

Was that the game where the pitcher kept beaning the batter until he charged the mound?

This suspension was actually for three separate incidents. But ya, it's mostly for the Nats-Marlins game brawl. They beaned Morgan early in the game and he took his base. Then they threw a pitch behind him later in the game that didn't touch him and he charged the mound. He then threw an aweful punch at the pitcher and missed only to get clotheslined by Marlins 1B Gabby Sanchez. Morgan is a former hockey player. Guess he still thinks he's on the ice.

If you're going to charge the mound, at least get a punch in, reminds me of that old Yankees coach getting destroyed by Pedro Martinez a few years ago.

Lol, that was old Don Zimmer who I always really liked. To this day I don't know what he was thinking making a run at Pedro.

Still the biggest EPIC FAIL ever was Robin Ventura charging Nolan Ryan and getting destroyed.

Twins up 5-0 in the 1st, with a double and triple scoring 5 runs on 2 outs. Surprised the Rangers haven't pulled their pitcher yet.

Dull 2nd inning for the Twins after the 1st inning barrage, I see why they're the highest scoring team in the 1st inning in baseball though.

Jim Thome is their best hitter with Morneau out of the lineup. Mauer's power seems to have disappeared in the new ballpark.

I bet those White Sox are sure kicking themselves for not resigning Thome and are having to resort to spending 4 million bucks for a one month rental of Manny.

Thome was a good value and a good guy. The White Sox only bring over players who are overpaid and not wanted by there current teams (manny, Alex Rios, Edwin Jackson, Jake Peavy, etc, etc)

I mean my Yanks were there for 3 games earlier this year and Jeter as well as Swisher (those are the only two Yanks I can recall) hit a HR there but is it a hitters or pitchers park?
