The prices are right for now.

Unlike Toshi this is not a race to the bottom.
The sales of PS3 will no doubt double again on the next price drop.
it has every time prior.

1. To encourage blu-ray penetration - The PS3 is the most reliable blu-ray player. The other BDA hardware manufacturers seem to be fumbling forward. The format needs a standardized spec within the marketplace. The price-cut eases the burden off the other manufacturers.

2. To avoid giving up more ground to the Xbox and Wiii.

3. Holiday season - This is the best time for price cuts that will significantly drive volume.

4. Warner and the war - I am not sure what to make of this relationship anymore. I want Warner to be blu exclusive. I am not sure if the Warner titles that are exclusive to HD-DVD are on contract. If that is the case then I do not see them making a decision until such a contract ends. Who knows anymore!

Early adopters don't always drive mass adoption. Enjoy your purchase.
there are no exclusive HD-DVD titles for Warner....they are movies that haven't come out yet...

if these movies were contractually tied...then they couldn't advertise these movies for Blu...period..(Batman Begins, V for Vendetta)

I personally believe that Sony should have made the 40-GB @ $349 to directly compete with the XBox 360 listed @ $399 which would make the PS3 an even more tempting console than that of the XBox 360 and more reasonable to the Wii in terms of price.

What do you guys think?
I think Sony offers a better product and the 50.00 will not hamper sales compared to xbox 360

That make their actions more confusing. They have the largest Studio impact on the other format. Why cast a line when you can cast a net...................their thought process? I stopped supporting them. Should I buy their upcoming titles? Your opinion wouldn't hurt.

I think the $399 during the Christmas season is priced right given the recent response in sales volume. Given the number of freebies bundled with the unit, it is effectively at the lower price but get the buyer to experience the full potential of the box - movies + games.

Jan to March is usually slow in retail, I thank having it explicity priced at $349 at that time will help maintain the momentum.

I think they want to release them right, probably waiting until profile 1.1 players are out.
Plus they made these before they went neutral. But I am not worried, it is only a matter of time before WB goes BD exclusive... and then HD-DVD won't have any of their movies anymore.

Do you recommend supporting their upcoming titles? I notice that you have a Sony XBR lcd. I am looking to replace my projection while the bulb is still good. Do you have a pc hookep up to yours, and if so how crisp is the text?

maybe with those movies...they are doing what they did with Troy and are putting out a special edition around the time The Dark Knight comes out and are waiting to put out V for Vendetta in 08...

they are also still recovering from that MS ***** that they fired...I have no doubt that he was taking bribes to hold off BB and V...

I support Warner titles to encourage them to release future titles...

why push them away by not supporting?..

anyways...that's my reasoning..

Well it does support PC hookup, but I have yet to try it. I might when I buy a new computer... it would be cool to play some of these games on that huge screen.
But until then I can't say much about that. I did try hooking up an inferior mac laptop (inferior cause it is over 6 years old), and it looked like crap, but I did not use the DVI port on the tv, I used the receiver to hook it up.

I love the tv, it is the best I have seen, but you might want to wait until the OLED TVs are affordable cause I hear they are even better.
It will probably be the next kind of TV I buy... when i can afford one... in about 10 years

I will see if I can hook up a pc to the tv sometime and I will post about it if I do, but I can't promise when, it is a beast to unhook and move that computer (built it myself).

I think you should support the upcoming titles! Even though they might not be in the newest profile with all the extras, there are 3 BIG reasons to buy them.
1) The movie will still look great, better than ever... maybe not as good as it could be but better than you have ever seen it before. the extras are never a good reason to not buy something
2) We need to give WB the support they are looking for so when they decide to officially go exclusive, it will be in a shade of blu
3) the more discs we buy, the better sales, the sooner the war will end...

Why would you want to pay more?!?

Doesn't make any sense. Love it, yes, but don't bend over for it.

$400 is a phenominal price IMHO for the machine AS-IS. They need to raise the price back up if you asked me. The machine is way underrated for the low price.

The iphone cost $400 and you have to pay $70 a month for the service. A lot of people have no problem paying for it. I believe $400 for a PS3 and $60 a month for a game or 2-3 blu-ray movies is a better value.

$400 is a great deal!

I hear at $399 Sony is still losing more money than ever per unit and this price and the deduction is just temporary for the Holiday season. Just a marketing strategy. Expect to never see anything below $399 for a very very long time.

I think the PS3 should stay where it is. We need stand alone BD players to drop below that! I mean look at what the PS3 can do!! Why can't BD players be cheaper if they don't do nearly as much?
BD players need to be cheaper or there will be no sales.
Besides, the money they loose on each console is made back in software sales... DVDs, BDs, SACDs, CDs, PS3 games, PS2 games, PSN purchases, etc...
If they were to loose $200 on each console (blind random number, I have no idea what it really is), they would make that back up easily in software sales.
Plus it promotes the newest format that Sony is spearheading. I think it is worth them to keep the price down.

But stand alone BD players need to be cheaper than the PS3!!!!

Cool . That is just about the only thing that makes sense. I will order the Potter set tomorrow. My PS3 has changed the way that I look at home theater. However, I still want a dedicated pc within my setup. Based on your experience with friends and family, what is a good 1080p set with a pc input that displays crisp text? I have tried review sites but people don't seem to use the pc input. Anybody?

didn't the manufacturing cost for BD players drop recently?...

next time manufacturing costs drop....they'll keep this price for a little while longer and then drop it again...

or just keep this price and package a new game with it...

Youre STILL complaining about the PS3s price even after all the cuts? Are you freaking serious? A 40gig PS3 has a LOT more to offer hardware wise (wifi, bluray, double the HDD space) than a x360 premium. So no, they shouldnt be the same price

Should porches be the same price as a ford?

The larger the volume sold, the less the loss on each unit. Efficiencies and Scale = less models. I expect this to be the new price point, with cheaper software bundling. They won't bleed for long.

It's true Sony is losing money on every system but not as much as it did last year. As time goes by the cost to produce the system decreases. Next year it will cost them even less to produce. They will be able to sell it for less. I believe after 4 years or so is when the money starts rolling in.

Even though the X-box 360 is selling a lot, MS has barely made any money out it because each system they are still losing money and add to it that the ones sold are being sent back to get fixed under warranty.

The Wii is the only system selling more than it costs to produce because it is made of prehistoric processers. Its only a little bit faster than the 1st X-box.

Any lower than $399 and Sony starts to look desperate like Toshiba.
