Right. My PS3 doesn't count in Toshiba's eyes, so I guess my 65 Blu-ray's don't count either.

Without the raw data, not really. However high-level, back-of-the-napkin math would make me guess ~4pts or so. Since I am adverse to HDM incorrect non-rounded presentation, I would restate the numbers as 68-69 v 31-32... still excellent.

nope, and j6p doesn't even have an hdtv, dvd is "new" to j6p, i don't really know why both sides think that they can court j6p yet. 95% of people with a player and display for hd movies are upper-middle to upper class. yeah, we might say hd dvd owners are cheap, but they still have themselves a nice 800 dollar 720p 3000:1 contrast ratio lcd vizio and a $98 HD DVD player. J6P has a $ 32 inch, 480i RCA CRT TV with a Cyberhome DVD player for $30 bucks, both HDTV and HD DVD/BD are way out in the future for J6P, so quit trying to appeal to him at the current moment or in the near future, because until HDTV prices drop radically (yes, they have, but still need to drop more) and until HD hardware and SOFTWARE (listening Toshiba!) come down to current DVD prices the majority of society will not be intrested in HD products.

I posted that before the actual numbers were up. I was basing it off of the predicted numbers that were posted this morning!

Good news for BLU!!! the numbers have been tremendous!!

ill say that blu-ray did 220k for the week, HD DVD did about 85k then, so take off the 50k that Open Season did and we got exactly 2:1 or rounded 67:33 ratio. don't forget that hd dvd was having sales too, where discs were scanned with the purchase of a player. its still a very dominating week for blu-ray given all the hd dvd sales.

I think something Sony (or the BDA) did is working. I mean, with numbers like that... it's a wonder that HD-DVD is still around.

They can say that (this week) they have 3:1 sales in USA, and UK, and 9:1 in Japan. Bl-ray all the way. What's HD-DVD?? nothing.... absolutely nothing.

I did like that I DO BLU ad in there... plain and simple, just facts and nothing else. The SI number is up again, the week is up, the numbers are up... Blu-ay is going up up up!

The Close Encounters (blu-ray) review on page 24 is very good. She says that offering all 3 different versions on a single blu-ray disc is the closest that hi-def media has come to a "killer app".

I agree that HD format is still a small percentage of the whole shabang ... but every week Blu-ray dominates the sales charts is a very good thing ...

Sure I'm guessing most people don't buy based on the sales charts ... but those are the same people who make the sales charts end up being what they are ... so keep doing what you're doing "oblivious to the sales charts" people!

This December is definitely the make or break month for HD DVD. If they fail to gain ground on Blu-ray, as I suspect will be the case, I think we can expect to see HD DVD whither and die in 2008 as Blu-ray continues to grow.

what are you guys thinking for next week.

Old School, Anchorman, Mr. Bean's Holiday and Hot Rod are all going to appeal pretty well the the 360 add on crowd. does blu-ray have the residual sales to cancel those titles out and transformers and shrek residual sales.

Not so sure about this. Maybe they don't actually look up the charts, but when they hear that blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2:1 they tend to tune out everything else. People fear obsolesence. The only question is whether they hear that before they make their choice.

Are catalog comedies funnier in HD? HR and MBH might sell some but OS and AM are not going to help HD DVD.

Are you kidding? None of those 4 you mentioned will do much. 2 were total flops in the US and the Will ferrell movies are both old. Do these even pose a threat. As far as TF 7 Shrek residual, doesn't blu have much more in the way of residual to offer.

The #s will dip but no lower than 61:39.

Yeah I agree Blu-Ray Buckeye ... people can read the "writing on the walls" ... they can see that there are simply more racks of Blu-ray in their favorite stores ... and they can tell that well ... most of the people they know who have Hi Def players have Blu-ray ... to be honest ... I don't know anybody personally who has HD DVD ... but I know many that have Blu-ray.

Ditto my 58 (with another 5 in the mail).

Sure, the Blu-ray attach rate for PS3 could be higher, but it's not as if people who own PS3s never buy BDs.

Default Sales chart showing Nielsen/Videoscan numbers

I wanted to see a trend in the percentage of BD sales vs HD DVD, so I came up with this chart. It shows the percentage of BD sales through the year since April according to Nielsen/Videoscan.

The chart shows a positive trend for BD up until September, which is when the Paramount announcement happened. Then it starts picking up again, but its affected by the Transformers week.

I think its important to note that the frequency of weeks in which BD sells over 70% are occourring more frequently as time passes, which I think is another sign of a positive trend.

simply being day-and-date releases you can bet hot rod and mbh will do at least 12k a piece, transformers and shrek combined will do 45k, i think that old school and anchorman appeal very well to the add on crowd and those could do 25k combined, approx. 95k in movie sales right there.

im seeing blu-ray like this

LFoDH - 25k
Spidey + Ratatouille = 60k
Thats 85k right there.
Open Season, Hairspray and Santa Clause 3 will all drop off the map, but combined will sell 10k to match HD DVD 95k number
300 will do well again, PE HD DVD will outsell it on PE on BD.
The rest is up in the catalog titles, I don't know, but if HD DVD has one of those buy a player and scan a bunch of movies with it deals, it could really hurt this weeks numbers.

This week is going to be based off old catalog titles, which blu-ray should win, but i think its going to be a 53:47 kind of a week.

I think a lot of the titles from the week will carry over a little stronger than we think, and especially with people snatching up X-MAS gifts for those BD Players and PS3s, I will be going for an optimistic 68:32.
