I blind-bought the Blu-Ray at Costco the other day, for about $9.00. I did it mainly because this site gave it a great review, and for the price, I said what the heck. I was amazed by both the PQ and AQ, and by the film itself. Smartly written with great actors, and entertaining from beginning to end--not to say that it didn't have its drawbacks, though; it's a bit on the predictable side. Anyway, another great movie from was perhaps the best year in film in the last decade: 2007.
Great movie

Crowe and Bale turn in very strong performances in this one imo.

And I agree with you about the PQ/AQ, top notch.

i completely agree. i however don't feel it was super important to the overall story, i think they just needed a bridge to "connect" Bourne to it. and even though that is a negative, my overall enjoyment of the film wasn't tarnished at all

some of my buddies would be screaming hissy fits if you called their precious little Bourne films essentially, "boring"

was it possibly a case of being over-hyped? did you hear a lot about them before viewing them? or did you expect something other than the type of story it was?

so while i wasn't really watching it intently, i've seen it over 10 times to know and remember exactly how much i love the film / series. the beginning always kind of bugs me because it starts with a hazy flashback. i always wished the film would start with showing Bourne now, and THEN having a flashback, but oh well. that's really my only complaint.

some terrific action, an absolutely amazing score / soundtrack that really adds another dimension to the frenetic pacing and tension the film has at times. and of course the great "she's standing right next to you" moment i always love that

for me personally, the Bourne films are better than anything that's been done with the James Bond character / franchise, and the abysmal Mission Impossible films (never got into those, don't know why...). this is where i come for my action fix, and it does exactly what it's supposed to.

5/5
i love the whole trilogy!

I was just soooo uninterested in what was going on the whole time.

I didn't really know much about them before watching besides some people criticizing the editing and filming (and actually I had even seen the first one years ago....and enjoyed it then ) so I wasn't sure what I was going to get.

They were just very....blah....to me.

I believe I gave them

Legion

1 out of 5 stars

The apocalypse is nigh! Charlie is a chain smoking waitress at a diner in the middle of nowhere. A place where their only customers are people hopelessly lost in the desert. She also happens to be pregnant with mankind's only hope. It is to this place that rogue angel Michael (Bettany) comes down from heaven to protect her baby from the hordes of possessed monsters led by the angel Gabriel (Durand). Legion is one of those movies that sucker you in with the trailer which contain the only decent scenes in the film. Oh sure we get introduced to some people and a half hearted attempt at a back story, but really we don't care because we know they'll be dead in short order. And apparently the best that one of God's soldiers can do is fire off a machine gun. Oh ya, I forgot to mention that Dennis Quaid is in it (that should have been a warning right there). Surprisingly the only person who somewhat impressed me was Kate Walsh as the rich high maintenance wife. Still she's not enough to save things. This movie has been done before when it was called Constantine and unlike this steaming pile of crap it was pretty decent.

Didn't feel like quoting all of these, but I agree for the most part on the reviews for Superbad, The Bourne Supremacy, and 3:10 to Yuma. All very good films in my opinion. The Bourne Trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies, so of course I'd say that about The Bourne Supremacy.

Also, I gave up on Diesel after he told me he hated all three Bourne movies...

Wall-E

i've watched Wall-E a few times now, so tonight i finally listened to the commentary by Director Andrew Stanton while watching and doing some work. and if ever there was a film where you could watch and listen to a commentary and not really miss anything, Wall-E is that film

as much as i love the movie, i've always had the same two problems with it. and really, they are the only issues i have with the movie:

1) the third act feels extremely stretched out and gets kind of boring after awhile
2) the third act has been done to death: "non stop chase sequence to catch up to or retrieve something that someone has lost" and after all the originality and brilliant opening act, i was disappointed by this story 'arc' / turn

aside from those two complaints, there really isn't anything i disliked about Wall-E. i love the character of Wall-E, and i'm always amazed when i watch it how the Pixar staff is able to convey so much emotion through an object that is a machine, cannot speak and really can't display emotions all that much. but just through eye movement, body movement, and his beeps and whistles we completely understand what he's doing, feeling and even thinking! outstanding on every level and easily could have failed.

same goes for Eve. she's simply "high class" and the higher technology. but she doesn't have a "face" per se, no mouth, no nose, just eyes and body movements and a 'voice' to express feelings and motive. and it's amazing how invested i was in these characters! it's almost frightening was quickly was a fan of Wall-E. i think was won over when we see
[Show spoiler]his awesome little house
it felt real, cozy and made Wall-E seem like a genuine, caring individual... robot... even though he was essentially living in / with garbage.

while my qualms with the third act are not very severe, i think i dislike them so much because i absolutely LOVE the first act. the music, the atmosphere, the directing, the visuals, the haunting reality that this is Earth and all that's here is Wall-E, a cockroach and millions of pounds of trash. i could watch Wall-E at work in that opening act for hours on end and be fascinated. it's incredibly eerie how much the film resembles many of our current problems, and while Stanton claims that he had the idea for Wall-E a long time ago and never meant for it to be scene as "anti-government" or a "go Green" statement, it's easy to see why some see it as that.

i also loved how they got Sigourney Weaver to do some voice work. and as Stanton says, "this is a sci-fi movie and she's a sci-fi legend" and - a fact i didn't know - they apparently have a piece of music from 2001:A Space Odyssey in Wall-E! (sometime around when
[Show spoiler]all the humans fall out of their chairs while the Captain wrestles with the ship wheel)
- which is of course a sci-fi classic. it's small touches like these that make me love Pixar films and the people who put 100% into their films.

also love the ending. yeah, it's mushy, some may even call it cheesy, but i thought it was brilliant. having Eve fix Wall-E but then have him be
[Show spoiler]reset and not remember her until they had their "kiss" (spark)
was extremely cute and brought out the inner romantic in me (along with the 8 year old who loves animation and a happy ending). and was a fitting end to this part of their story.

definitely recommended

PQ: easily 5/5

film itself: 4.5/5

I don't drink the Pixar Kool-Aid as much as most

I didn't think Wall-E was anything special. I gave it a 4 right after seeing it, enjoyed it but it wasn't great I believe I said. After thinking it over more I ended up lowering it to a 3.5/5.

I've changed my rankings of them in the past a few times (and may do so again in the future), but currently:

Toy Story 3 - 5/5

Toy Story - 5/5

Toy Story 2 4.5/5

[HUGE GAP]

A Bug's Life 4.25/5

The Incredibles - 4/5

Cars - 3.75

Up - 3.5/5

Wall-E - 3.5/5

Finding Nemo - ≤ 3/5*

Monsters Inc - ≤ 2.5/5*

Ratatouille - ?/5 (I didn't even sit through the whole thing)

*Can't think of a definite score off the top of my head for these two.

Magic - 1978

Anthony Hopkins. Ann Margret, Burgess Meredith. If I don't have your attention yet, I'm not sure what else to do. Billed as a tragic love story, Magic is a story about a magician who failed and found new hope in the form of a dummy, Fatz. Slowly, the movie unfolds unveiling his slow decent into delusion and paranoia. Is Fatz real? Watch the movie to find out!

For what the movie does, it does it well. It tells a story, with edge of your seat direction. This is not pure Horror, but more of a psycho thriller. Highly Recommended. Time to branch out and give this one a try. Probably the best movie about a magician and his dummy. A very unique story that will stick with you after watching it.

5/5

Beauty and the Beast

Film: 4.5/5
-great film
-great themes about inner/outer beauty (and thus inner/outer character). Beast prince and Gaston are
[Show spoiler]all about outer character, which gets them nowhere. They both pay a huge price: Beast prince gets cursed, Gaston gets killed. At least the Beast prince survived long enough to learn the curse which geniusly was to force-teach him inner beauty

-I love the irony of
[Show spoiler]how Belle rejects Gaston (all outer beauty), yet falls for Beast (all inner beauty).
.
-I like how this is somewhat similar to Kong, but prefer the non-verbal communication in Kong -- its just more powerful IMO (I know I know, comparing sci-fi to a Disney movie )
-error at 45:07-45:08? at 45:07, Belle approaches a GREY door. At 45:08, the door suddenly becomes BROWN.

PQ: 5/5

AQ: 4.5/5 (great, but lyrics of songs was a tad hard to decipher at times)

Dude you are asking for it!! Ratatouille is the Best Pixar Movie! of course IMO. Monsters Inc has a lame story i can agree but the film gets better every time i watch it. Up?? Come on man, seriously.

Maybe you just arent into the whole family movie thing. There nothing wrong with that i just like every genre i good movie is a good movie.

Wall-E is the most serious movie ever released by Disney, its political and very believable! Nevermind him being in love, thats for the kids look at the message of the movie.
