Seems to be getting mixed reviews from critics. Hopefully New Line does well on this - speculation is they have a lot riding on this one.

Could be the lower fan rating is due to reaction to perceived content by some.

thats clearly what it is....the last movie like this (Christian upheaval) was Da Vinci Code....and that garnered a 25% on rotten tomatos because of it.

And even the critics bashed that movie as well.....that grossed a VERY good amount for the type of drama it was it grossed 218 million domestically and over 500 million internationally......i think the golden compass based on these standards should do just fine.

It was a decent movie, if a little slow. Some of the character interaction seemed a little fast (not enough detail) and some of the scenes did not seem to flow into each other very well. I did like the movie, but it was not on par with Narnia or LotR in my opinion.

Attendance at my theatre tonight was good. The seven oclock sold out, but the matinees were lame. I'm hearing the whole religious rant about this one, being written by an atheist and all, but I don't think that would hurt it's numbers at all.

I give it 5 out a 10. Not bad, but needs story work. Some of the characters seemed 2 dimensional to me, also. But I never read the book so I could be way off on this whole thing.

Hope this helps.

It's pretty good. I agree with Eddie that it lacks the emotional depth of LOTR which seems to be the de facto standard for fantasy movies now. Some of the great performances come from Nicole Kidman. There is one scene that was just chilling - amazing what you can do with your eyes.

Absolutly. Nicole was probably the highlight performance of the show. 'Specially in that see through gown. Wow.

One comment: should have had the last chapters from the book.

I don't care if 10 out of 100 people in the focus group would be completely confused about it, the ending loses its power without it.

Don't worry, no spoilers. Suffice it to say, I really liked it, but the ending needed to be there.

I posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating here:

Saw this movie tonight with my son. I've read all the books and enjoyed them immensely, but I am not a religious person and share many of Pullman's views.

That said, there is nothing offensive in any way in this movie to a person of faith (any faith). The film is anti-authoritarian, not anti-religion, and the Magisterium has no relation to the church.

I enjoyed the film, but the (non)ending is so awful that I think it will devastate its box office chances.

The theater was packed but I don't think the audience was pleased by the end from the grumblings I heard.

I feel that New Line was feeling a bit iffy about hinging the ending with what the book has. After what happened to Eragon, I was not surprised. Also there's the "controversial" issue of Pullman which is really a non-issue to movies and books, which may have affected New Line's final decision.

I'm sure that Chris Weitz would have had a different ending. If you notice, there are some shots that are missing from the movie that was in the trailer.
