It's terrible. No MLB teams belong in Florida. Tampa has averaged 23K, 23K, 22K the past three seasons. And they've averaged something like 90 wins per season over those years with two division titles in baseball's toughest division. And the only reason their attendance is that high is because of all those games against Boston and NY when Sox and Yankee fans pack the stands.

The Florida Marlins are even worse. The Marlins won the 2003 World Series and averaged just 16K per game that year. Every year they find a way to remain competitive yet never seem to crack 18K per game. Florida just isn't suited for MLB teams outside of spring training.

The collapse of MLB in Cleveland is the most astounding to me. They literally sold out every home game (something like 42K+) between the early 90's through early 00's but check out the Indians attendance since. And they have had a couple good teams in that span. I believe they were one game from the World Series in 2006.

Baseball seems to be a dying sport in general, with the exception of about a dozen teams, there is very little fan support for it. It's a shame given it's history in this great country, but unless major changes are made soon the MLB is going to have to do something about their small market teams.

I wonder how much the stats are affected by the seasons though. Floridians may care about baseball, but just not enough to deal with the heat in the summer. I guess that'd be more of an excuse for the Marlins' attendance than the Rays' though.

I went to a Giants game a few years ago, back when Bonds was still playing. It was right around the time he passed Ruth, so I think this is around June of 05 or something. The stadium had a pretty cool atmosphere, and my friend regretted wearing a t-shirt and shorts, around the time the sun went down.

I've only been to about a dozen stadiums, but AT&T Park is easily my 3rd favorite (behind Yankee Stadium and New Yankee Stadium, of course).

Aside from witnessing a Bonds HR, the other highlights for me were the Louisville Slugger booth (watching a guy carve bats), the Coke slide (I wasn't sure if it was only for kids, but the workers didn't stop us from going on it), and randomly sitting next to/chatting it up with another Yankee fan, who just moved to SF from NYC (her brother was trying to convert her to a Giants fan).

What depresses me about MLB are those now considered irrelevant "small market" teams that have great histories. Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Baltimore come to mind. Those were great teams when I was growing up. Baseball is unique from other sports in that respect. I never hear the words "small market" associated with the Steelers, Chiefs or Ravens, yet they play in the same city with supposedly "small market" deadbeat MLB franchises. The absurd MLB finance structure is probably the driving factor here, and I'm not directing this at the Yankees either. It's the entire system top to bottom.

Oops, had the year wrong. It was actually '06. I remember they were playing the Marlins, because they had a CF at the time named Abercrombie, and the fans out in the bleachers kept slowly chanting his name, over and over (like the Darryl chant in The Simpsons).

That was '07 when they were up 3-1 on the Red Sox and blew it. It was the same year of the infamous "bug game" in Cleveland against the Yankees.

Either way, what happened to all of those fans? That's pretty bad to say the least.

Not only did the Indians blow the 3-1 series lead, but it's as if they didn't even try:

Game 5 -- lost 7 to 1
Game 6 -- lost 12 to 2
Game 7 -- lost 11 to 2

Jonathan Papelbon is likely to request an $11.5 million salary this offseason during the salary arbitration process.
It's not all that surprising given the $9.35 million that he earned in 2010. The Red Sox are expected to shop Papelbon this winter, but the trade market will be thin for a 30-year-old that registered a 3.90 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 67 innings in 2010. It would make sense for the Red Sox to simply non-tender the righty, but all signs point to them paying up and retaining him. Nov. 19 - 10:51 am et

Wow... just an incredible story! Win and make millions in MLB or lose the game and be forced to serve two years in what is technically (North and South Korea never signed a peace treaty) still a war zone.

Shin-Soo Choo Wins Gold, Avoids Korean Military Service

South Korea's baseball gold medal in the Asian Games on Friday allows Shin-Soo Choo to stay on the Cleveland Indians' roster for next season instead of reporting to mandatory military service.

Anything other than a gold medal would have forced Choo, 28, into a two-year military training in South Korea, which requires men to complete the service before they reach the age of 30.

South Korea beat Taiwan 9-3 in Guangzhou, China, clinching a waiver from military service for all its players, including Choo.

"It's a great relief, for Choo and for all of us too," Indians manager Manny Acta told ESPNdeportes.com.

"We are talking about a great player in the prime of his career. I feel happy for Choo, but also for Cleveland because it won't lose one of its best players for a long period of time," Acta said

The Indians outfielder went 2-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base in the final game of the tournament, and was 8-14 (.571) with three homers, 11 RBIs and eight runs scored overall.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees are about to offer a three-year, $45 million contract to shortstop Derek Jeter.
Jeter is reportedly hoping for a pact of at least four years and preferably five or six, so we'll have to wait and see if he accepts. All told, it's a very reasonable offer by the Yanks. Jeter is no longer a strong defensive shortstop and batted just .270/.340/.370 over 663 at-bats in 2010. He wouldn't come close to a contract worth $45 million on the open market. The Yankees have hired Larry Rothschild as their pitching coach.
Rothschild, who has been the Cubs pitching coach from 2002-10, gets a three-year contract. He was also pitching coach of the 1997 World Series Champion Marlins and was the first manager in Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays history. Rothschild's main task will be to try to resurrect the career of A.J. Burnett, who tanked this past season in his second year with the team. Nov. 19 - 4:49 pm et

Yes he did, although a lot of people including Yankees fans think he won for past performances, rather than the job he did in 2010.

whether he truly deserved it or not.... you cant be a below average shortstop and win it... yes, someone else should have won....but hes not a below average defensive SS

Probably the same ESPN source that falsely told us McNabb was getting $40 mill guaranteed.
