Im trying to totally understand the different audio options associated with Blu Ray. I know there have been loads of threads on this and I have read most of them but some do conflict with others. I run a PS3 and Im about to upgrade to the Denon 2808 (from a 2805). Ok if I quickly list how I understand the new audio formats and im sure someone with allot more knowledge will put me straight.
Bitstreaming as I understand is the ability for a player to output the raw audio data 1's and 0's which is then decoded by your amp. So the PS3 can only Bitstream DD and DTS? Now if the PS3 could Bitstream TrueHD, DTS-MA and PCM I could also run this across optical and have a compatible amp decode it? As I understand the PS3 cant Bitstream the later 3 instead it internally decodes these and then sends them in analog form across HDMI. To me it sounds as thought the best option to transmit these signals would be in raw Bitstream form? Before I fork out a big sum of cash (on the 2808) can someone just clarify that the PS3 will send full PCM 7.1 True HD 7.1 DTS-MA 7.1 all be it across HDMI and does this have any draw backs? I have read a few reports that audio across HDMI has a reduced volume to the amp then optical? I would be grateful if someone could just put me straight ![]() |

![]() The PS3 passes PCM over HDMI (which is the uncompressed digital audio) and the lossy DD and DTS formats. It then gets converted to analog by the receiver. The Lossless tracks (all 3 of them) cannot get passed through optical, since the spec limits the bandwith (even though optical is capable of much more). And there is really no gain in sending bitstream over HDMI instead of PCM, if the PS3 can decode it. It already decodes DolbyTHD, we're just waiting for DTS HD MA now. |

Thank-you for the reply but im still a bit confused. PCM is sent from the PS3 as raw data (1,s and 0,s)across HDMI? The PS3 internally unzips True HD then sends to the amp again in digital form across HDMI? So what is the difference between Bitstream and PCM aren't they the same thing? ![]() |

PCM is digital audio in a non compressed, lossless form. DolbyTHD and DTS HD MA take that PCM and compress it losslessly to save space and bandwith. Sending it bitstream means that the receiver unpacks the data back to PCM, PCM means that the PS3 does the decoding and sends it as PCM (hopefully soon for DTS HD MA as well). In the case of the PS3 all converting to analog is done in the receiver. It's the decoding that differs. Last edited by HDJK; 12-13-2007 at 11:05 AM. |
