I travel a lot because my job requires me to do so and everytime I go to a different state I always go to their local wal mart to check out their blu ray selection and everytime I find a huge selection of blus and a very limited secelction of HD DVDs... I can confirm this in 4 different states that I have been in the past 6 months.

Don't think that Wal-Mart is anywhere near going Blu-exclusive as we've seen a small surge in ads coming from both formats that are sponsored by Wal-Mart. The local Wal-Mart around here has always had a larger selection of Blus compared to the Reds. However all that being said, the local Wal-Mart has sold out of their Blu players, the Blu movies have been WELL picked over (only one or two of each title left) and all their HDTVs are running through a Philips BDP9000. And to compare to the Red side, they have had 7 Tosh 1080i standalones in the store since Thanksgiving and only two of them have sold, and their Red discs have only sold two or three copies of a few titles.

What location is that? Do you have any pics?
Every Wal*Mart I go to is 75% Blu, 25% HD DUD.

The display unit appears to be consistent, but not all stores have the display. There was a walmart about a 50 minute drive away from toronto that had no HDMs at all.
Those displays look like this, from my local Canadian Wal*Mart.

The Walmart in Casper, Wyoming (at least the one by the mall...I didn't check the other) is only carrying Blu-rays. The have a whole endcap, and there's nary an HD DVD in the store.

I'm sure it's a local decision, so I wouldn't read too much into it, but it's reassuring none the less.

The Wal-Mart near me put the Blu-Rays and the HD-DVD's in those glass door enclosures that are locked. So any time you want to buy a new BD you have to get an employee to unlock it. Its only the new releases though, they have the catalog titles on a regular shelf.

Walmart stores which are located in upper middle class neighborhoods are focusing their product mix to that clientele. Anecdotal stories really do not reflect what is happening across a large number of new Walmart locations located in suburban neighborhoods throughout the U.S. The Supercenters and Sam's Club locations carry a diverse range of middle to high-end products including Blu-ray. Their focus does not have to be "cheap" players to move merchandise.

Yup. At first they had them hung on the end of the racks, now they have their own special rack. At the local Wal-Mart the BD are about 60% of the rack. I noticed that there are Blue and Red fins on each side of the rack, and guess which one is broken...thats right the HD DUD fin is broke. My dad got a kick out of that when I pointed it out to him.

Wal-mart out here had almost no HD discs at all until mid-fall. Over the summer they had 3-4 BR titles and 2-3 DUD titles all locked in a case with the PS3 games. They've since expanded and migrated to a 7-row end cap facing the back wall of the store. The end cap has 3 rows of BR discs, 3 rows of DUD discs, and a smaller center row of BD discs. Prior to the holidays one side/edge of the cap had one additional row of BR discs while the other side had some misc. stuff. They've replaced the misc. stuff with a row of DUDs so I suppose it's fair to say that they've expanded their DUD selection 33% while holding their BR selection constant here. That would sound pretty good if you didn't know that "selection" meant ~20 DUDs and ~24 BRs with most having a single copy in stock. The local market is NOT HD friendly.

Walmart should go Blu-exclusive---its their corporate color.

Oak Harbor, WA
Default Northwest Walmart

Well this is my second post. Let me expand a little on what I said earlier. I have just returned from my local Walmart. I did validate that they do not currently carry any Blu titles, and have increased their HD DVD titles. My Walmart is in Oak Harbor, WA on Whidbey Island (Navy town). This time I asked what was the reason they no longer carried Blu Disks. They said they had had a high level of theft of Blu Ray disks in the Marysville store (Norht of Everett) and that Walmart had pulled all BD from Walmart shelves in the area until they can get a locked case like they do with games.

I must admit, I am a little disappointed about the response I got from my first post. I have been a "lurker" on this site since the beginning of October. At that time I had decided to enter the HD world and after a lot of reaserch had decide on BLU. I bought a 80 GB PS3 the first week of October and since have bought more than 85 BLU disks. I have a 700+ SD DVD library and would like to replace with HD.

I bought a Sony Home Theatre System (lower-end) with 3 HDMI inputs last month. I have my PS3 and my Direct TV HD DVR hooked up to it and have been looking for a stand-alone to complete the set-up. I watched the price of players come down through the holidays, but am waiting for the CES results before pulling the trigger...I have in fact considered going neutral as my major motivation is to replace my SD library and am by nature impatient.

I have enjoyed lurking on this site and considered myself a strong BLU supporter, but as others have found, not a very welcoming site unfortunately...I had thought you might want to know on the "Walmart Blu exclusive" thread that the store here was the opposite.

What system is that please? I'm in that market for exactly that (well, truth-be-told, 4 HDMI inputs would work better). TIA

I guess they're not to worried about the HD DVD's by the sounds of it. Not worth stealing I guess.

Well, why didn't you say this in your first post? It did give the appearance of a drive-by trolling, and we're pretty sensitive (perhaps a little too much) about that. BTW, Welcome to Blu-ray.com!
