i agree with you 100% though, the sports games are the same every year. what i would really want is instead of a yearly thing, make it a bi or even tri-yearly thing. The big reasoning for having these things yearly in the past is all the transactions that occured from year to year. However, in a time where all consoles have an internet connection, release a great game that you worked on for a few years, if there are roster changes update them via the internet.
