S- Is the low end model - The LCD has larger pixels and the lesser Bravia engine

V-Is a step up with a better LCD screen but usually the same Bravia engine

W-Is a the better LCD screen and XBR engine

XBR is their top of the line, currently XBR4 & XBR5 they have the higher pixel court per inch, and the Bravia PRO Engine.

In a Nut Shell, the W line is an XBR without the XBR frame! It is most bang for the bucks!

I have an XBR2 40" myself! Hopes this helps!

According to sony's site, the v and w series use the same Bravia EX engine.

It couldn't be considered an XBR4 or 5 without the frame as they (XBR4/5) support 120hz.
