Whether that system uses active shutters (as most 3D displays now do), polarized glasses like you find in the theatre, or even future glasses free displays. Thats not to say there won't ever be better display technolgies with resolutions far above 1080p but as far as presenting 1080p 3D video the Blu-Ray 3D standard is completely future proof.

And the Blu-Ray 2D standard is just as "future proof" as 3D. So, if someone doesn't care for 3D, has no use for it, and wouldn't even use it if they had it, then it makes sense for them to just get the 2D version of the movie.
