Totally agree.

When you start your new format, I want to be able to get a tshirt plugging it so people will stop me and ask what is DarinDisc? Then I can tell them about this new up and coming technology and how quickly it is catching up with the competition.

So, that kind of success will have to make me rich. Right?

BTW: I think I'll have my parents buy 20 discs and 1 player. Then my format will have a better attach rate than HD DVD and that will mean my format is more successful than HD DVD. Right (again)?

Yeah I agree; math is most definitely not HD-DVD supporters' strongest subject.

I can't wait until next week's numbers are out because the numbers will absolutely be higher than 61:39 now that the HD-DVD BOGO is long over.

It really is quite sad that the fabled BOGO that the HD crowd believe is Blu's only reason for dominance, did not even get them close to a tie, much less a win.

Not only that, but they are NOT "gaining ground" as they claim! Every week they score lower than 50% they are in fact falling further and further behind in total sales, the gap between BD and HD DVD widened every single week in 2007.

That's lame.

BD zealots can try to spin the lack of featureset as a "who cares" scenario to keep hardware costs down. Well... that featureless samsung player wasn't exactly cheap... and neither are the high-end players that lack 1.1 and 2.0.

web features matter to Universal and to Warner, and to many consumers. For that reason, they should matter to the BDA. I'm stating this as a consumer who personally isn't interested in PIP or 2.0 web features. My personal preference isn't the point: there are consumers who care. And universal and warner are right: if you don't make it mandatory in the player, then how can a software vendor impliment the feauture reliably? "regular consumers" can't be expected to research the details of required and optional specifications when the shop for players. They should be able to buy a player and have it work and provide the full featureset of their software. Simple as that.
Web features may matter to Warner and Universal, but that will not get the paying customers interested, figures posted somewhere said 3% of customers were interested in web functionality. Didn't Universals figures for 300 show that only 10% of people looked at the web function more than once? And this on a platform bought by fans largely because it has web access (apparently). There is no indication that customers are buying films for the web or pip features, prove that they are ...

This fantasy about some blockbuster that only comes out as a HD DVD combo is completely nuts. It will never happen.

There would be a massive cost of creating millions of completely useless (as in unwanted) HD DVD discs. What would the retail price be? Same as DVD I suppose, so the studio takes a massive financial loss + suffers huge amounts of consumer & retailer complaints etc. etc.

Any studio that did this would have to be literally INSANE. It will never happen except in the poor, sad, pathetic, deluded brains of the most desperate HD DVD fanboys.

You may recall a recent low level experiment with this crazy idea - the Star Trek HD DVD combo box set. How's that hot seller doing? Not too well as it happens (maybe 25,000 copies sold in 6 weeks). Some idiots actually thought it would sell in the hundreds of thousands. Even Paramount weren't that stupid. I doubt they have even pressed 100,000 copies.

Anyhoo. Hurray for Blu-ray! 61:39 is perfectly OK and makes a complete clean sweep of 2007. Superb performance.

Odds of HD DVD winning a week in 2008? Absolutely ZERO.

I do think it likely though, that he will insist on the BD being optimized for the format, and as long as I get a nice lossless soundtrack, I'll be happy.

I have just seen red zealots pretend that the little disclaimer at the end of the Paramount press release isn't there so often that seeing posts that seem to read like Spielberg couldn't insist on a Blu only release hits my debate button. Something I shouldn't let happen.

Chris
I would expect that any Spielberg movie from paramount or uni would not see the light of day on either format until this is all settled. ce3k was the exception as it was a sony-owned film. sony just did right by Spielberg in seeking his approval.

besides - at this point, it's not like he (or the studios) are leaving that much money on the table that they won't recoup later after one format or the other has become established.

Same as the last two weeks: 61 - 39 Blu! (Three weeks in a row. Leaked by DV, as usual.)

Really? Even with the massive BOGO on Amazon for HD DVD which would have been included in this week's numbers?

That's incredibly impressive for Blu.

Yep.

Next week I am predicting a massive slaughter. I am venturing a guess of 70+ again, probably closer to 75 than 70.

Not just that, but a Massive HD DVD Bogo (including the HP 1-4) and two very good day and date (aka The Kingdom and Eastern Promises).
Only thing going on Blu side was Rush Hour 3 and a 45% off on Disney alone.

What the last three weeks of the year actually make me think is that despite huge Bogos (that should attract those famously touted new buyers of HD DVDs) and pretty good releases with Bourne, Kingodm and Eastern (only good one Blu side was The Simpsons), Blu Ray has maintained its weekly dominance and furthered its SI and yearly ones.
If anything (I know it may be a shock for HD DVD ers), Blu Ray has actually improved its pace imho.
But that'll be clearer in the following weeks with huge sale # (and not just ranks) I think.

My reasoning: If there had been a movie as strong as Bourne/ Kingdom + a giant Bogo the way it has happened in the past three weeks, but three months aggo, HD DVD would have had a win.
Now, they can only get away with a paltry 61:39 at best. That's furthering the gap imho.

The Christmas Tree Effect a la big PS3 sales + increased BD SAL sales is coming home to roost in a way not quite as anticipated by the HD DVD footles.

It's also lousy math.

For every 60 Blu-rays sold, 40 HD DVD's were sold. Clearly, to be tied, 60 HD DVDs would have to be sold. That's 50% more.

Yup, i'm surprise that no one has mentioned this before, 52 weeks of loosing. It would take ALOT for the other side to catch up to BD at this point and time, and i do mean alot.

On DV, we have to respect the fact that he chose a side and went with it. On the other hand, his false information and facts that he spread did not help his standing on the blu side. Now, it is clear his is seeing the truth of what is happening and what the future holds for our format so is slowing turning to the blu light.
