I was afraid someone would ask me that question. Answer is, "I don't know".

I sort of like to do things only once, so I have been waiting for not only the "war" to be decided, but 2nd to 3rd generation players. It looks like 2007 is going to be rather definitive in both respects.

Being a purchaser, rather than a renter, I also don't want to buy a bunch of discs in the wrong format. I think we all know at this point, however, which the right format will be.

When I get through with all of the above smokescreen and BS, the real answer is "when my wife will let me."

I hear ya there, I was shocked when mine bought me one for a gift. btw...I wish my best buy would carry more blu-ray, they have tons of hd-dvds!

Based on the sales figure trends I've seen, they may continue to have "tons of HD-DVD's" sitting there.

That is because no one is buying the HD-DVDs lol.

The problem with the dual disc concept on HD-DVD is that one does not know if the person buying the movie is a DVD owner only or a HD-DVD owner. What would be funny is if Universal started selling more HD-DVD titles then the number of HD-DVD players every manufactured. They could take a hit Universal movie and only release it on dual disc HD-DVD, then they could say look we sold several million copies of this HD-DVD movie. When in reality people buying the movie were watching it on a standard DVD players.
One can now purchase a brand new first generation HD-DVD Toshiba for $323. The numbers I am seeing from one of my sources is that they have several hundred HD-DVD players in stock but completely out of stock of Sony BLU-RAY players and low on Samsung BLU-RAY players. HD-DVD players even at $323 is not selling well.

Same thing for Total HD. You already know the HD DVD crowd will claim 100% of those sales for HD DVD.

The name issue is a curse as well as a blessing. People recognize HD DVD but may not know what is required to use it. They may think it is a special DVD enhanced for HDTVs (like enhanced for 16:9). As such, I think a good reason for wanting the combo is that they are worried about the returns. Combos are DVD, so the purchase remains valid (and the studio makes a nice premium).

Blu-ray has no such problem. It is clearly is not DVD. So people won't mistake it for such. And when they know what Blu-ray is, they know it isn't DVD. Once again, the name helps the cause.

Whatever happens, BD is entrenched now. There are too many absolutely delighted PS/3 owners for it to ever go away. And millions more on the way.

At this point it is either outright victory for BD, or long term dominance. And Japan guarantees that at worst, we will have to import the Universal titles.

As encouraging as the #s are, we still need to see them continue for the next couple months. This will cause a snowball effect, as the fence-sitters run grab the PS3 and 2nd gen Samsung, etc.

With european release of PS3,more blu-ray movies announced,Increasing in sales through different websites including amazon and dvdempire with facts,
Warner Bros now is releasing uncompressed sound and hopefully they catch up blu-ray releases with titles only so far on HD-DVD ,Casino Royale on the road .
At amazon top ten is eight titles blu-ray against two HD-DvD
DVDempire titles count till now 212 among preorder titles
HD-dvd is 188 among preorder titles.
So far and on blu-ray wins
