Not sure how Gimli fits, unless there is a shot of him early when his father (Glóin) sets off.

His father, Gloin, was one of the 12, was he not? Is there precidence for a younger Gimli?

Maybe a short teaser (:30) at Comic-Con. Start with a V.O. then a shot at the 13 dwarves walking to a Hobbit hole and them knocking at the door. Bilbo opens and you don't see him but you see inside his house. Then a quick shot of the landscapes they will be traveling through.

I though John Rhys Davies already said he wasn't going to do the Hobbit because he didn't want to be one of many Dwarves when he was THE dwarf in LoTR...

That's good enough to wet my whistle.

Oh and aren't they supposed to do some shooting in London? If so does that mean we might have Christopher Lee back?

Thranduil and Legolas were Sindar, but most of the elves of Mirkwood were Silvan. If I recall correctly from Unfinished Tales (I am on travel and don't have my books), Thranduil and his father Oropher fled Doriath during the War of Wrath in which Beleriand was destroyed. They settled in Mirkwood (then called Greenwood the Great) and Oropher ended up ruling the Silvan elves that lived there. Amdir, another Sindar refugee from Doriath ruled another group of Silvan elves across the Anduin. Oropher and Amdir were part of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and were killed during the battle at Mordor, where Gil-galad and Elendil also died. Therefore, Thranduil became king in Mirkwood and most of the elves in that area eventually gathered to him at his stronghold on the Forest River when Sauron regained his strength at Dol Guldur. I don't recall the location of Legolas' birth, whether he was born in Doriath or Mirkwood, but he was Sindar.

Celeborn's background is somewhat muddled as described in Unfinished Tales, although he also seems to be depicted as a Sindar and was a kinsman of King Elu Thingol (Elwe) of Doriath. I don't recall reading anything about him ever being in Valinor until he finally left Middle-earth in the Fourth Age. Celeborn met Galadriel when she stayed with Elwe and Melian in Doriath. Galadriel was not Sindar, but was one of the Noldor who journeyed from Valinor in the quest for the Silmarils. Apparently, it must have been common after the War of Wrath in the First Age for escaping Noldor and Sindar elves to rule over the more "uncouth" Silvan variety.

Yes, since Gimli was born T.A. 2879 and the events of the Hobbit occur in T.A. 2941, he would "only" have been about 62. Of interest is the fact he was 139 at the time of LotR, and lived at least to the age of 259, when he and Legolas sought the Grey Havens after the death of Aragorn.

Aren't Celeborn and Galadriel older than 10,000 years old? Or is it only Galadriel? From what I've read Galadriel existed in the time of the Pillars of Light/other one or was it Stars? I know she existed before the Moon and Sun. Not sure about her husband. Glad Cate Blanchette played a 10,000 year old character.

This is one of the main reasons why I love Tolkiens work. Set timelines, Ages and more. Pity he never got around to writing about the War at the End of Time or much more about the Fourth Age.
Can't wait to watch them both in 2012 and 2013! The titles are VERY befitting!

There are a lot of "trailers" for the Hobbit on youtube. That was the older one I knew about with "Smaug" in it.

According to The Annals of Aman, Galadriel was born in 1362 of the Year of the Trees. There were the equivalent of 1322 years from that date (one Year of Trees is about 9.5 solar years) to the first rising of the Sun, and 590 years to the end of the First Age. The Second Age lasted 3441 years, and the events of The Hobbit occur around Third Age 2941, therefore Galadriel was about 8294 years old when Bilbo left the Shire. Celeborn's birthdate is unknown.

Does anyone besides me think that Hugo Weaving looks like the Elrond in the Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit?

At least this time she isn't wearing a T-shirt that says "Make Offer" or "Disease-Free Since 2009" or whatever it said last episode.
