Shipping was free when I purchased just before the new year. Came with Spiderman 3 and the firmware was old but it's easy to update.

I downloaded the update released 12/22 I think from sony style and updated before I played WAR, Loaded quickly and played without a glitch.
Sunshine is playing fine as well, there was a short load time though

So no special settings on the bd player or TV? Seems my James Bond movies look better on an old player than on the sony 300. How come?

Check the menu settings. Something has to be there to imply upconversion over HDMI for DVD. If it still looks worse, try turning it off. Some movies just don't upconvert so well.

Are you connected via HDMI or component? Cause this player does not upconvert via component.

Yes, they tried to sell me an extended warranty plan which I refused. I'm sure when you go to purchase they'll provide information on it. They want those extra bucks. :-)

I know there has been a lot of discussion recently about the effect of higher priced cables and whether or not they are worth it. Some feel the $100+ Monster is worth it and some don't. I know it's not exactly easy to try both. I just checked around and I can't remember which thread had the discussion unfortunately.

Technically yes. But I don't think you'll find 7.1 material, at least not in a format that is supported by TOSLINK.

I saw that pans labyrinth was in 7.1 so does that mean that through a optical cable I will not be able to get 7.1?

The brand of cable doesn't matter one little bit. The ONLY things you need to consider is if the cable is version 1.3 and if the ends are manufactured well.

Version 1.3 cables support all the audio specs through the cable. Having good ends means the cable won't fail at the connection.

Other than that, buying any HDMI cable that costs $50 or more is just foolish. After all, what's flowing through that cable is digital data, not analog signals. There was a time when the cable had some effect on the sound/picture. Not now when you're passing 1's and 0's.

High-priced HDMI cables are just a rip-off.

That's not entirely true. I'm not goiung to debate the real world advantage of high priced HDMI cables, but digital is NOT perfect in and out. Yes, it's only 0s and 1s, but they travel insanely fast and jitter (the actual timing to reproduce the analog signal out of the 0s and 1s) is something that can be reduced with better cables. Granted it only has a limited effect on short cable runs, but it can make a difference.

John

I am connected via HDMI. Perhaps I just expect too much in the upconversion process but I appreciate all of you who are trying to help. With all the momentum going to BD, perhaps they will release the Bond films in BD and I won't worry about upconversion...

Right. I was talking about short runs. The typical runs of 10' and under. My cables are all 6'. Anytime you start running long distances there's still an issue.

S300 doesn't have HDMI 1.3 support so that doesn't matter.
