we're still too far off for that. and gamers won't stand for not having a physical copy of the game. how will we go to a friends house to play if its stuck on the hard drive?

the next console will be out in 3-5 years, thats not enough time to get the infrastructure up for digital distribution and what not

It's not about what gamers want it's about what the 10,000 pound gorilla aka Microsoft gives you.

Watch Xbox live.

Xbox live is MS testing ground for what they have coming next.

oh i totally hear what you're saying. but it just wont be viable, even in 5 years. the fact that a lot of america still can't get broadband proves that

Again I wouldn't be surprised to see it. Do I think the next console with not have a disk drive? No

Consoles have a life expectancy of about fives years, that puts the Next Box about 3 years away. I can see the next system having a large HD and offering customers the option of downloading the games over live or going to the store and buying a copy on disk, eventually winging customers off disk media. But this does raise the question of what disk drive would MS go with? DVD has become to small, HD DVD for games only...Maybe. Blu-Ray, possibly? But again Gates says "The future is not HD Disk its downloads", well see.

How about this.

M$ creates the Xbox Next with an internal hard drive like that of the PS3. User expandable/upgradeable, with no internal disk drive. This new system is offered in two flavors, Downloads only or for $100.0 more with an external disk drive for those that don't want to be bound to Xbox live.

yeah right. then they can't charge you 100 dollars more for a system that has a bigger hard drive. At least at launch, the 20GB didn't have some of the features of the 60B. IE the wi-fi, card readers, etc.
