Good for you.

Mulholland Dr. is my No.1 film of all time.

Lost Highway in the top 25.

The Studio Canal transfer of Mulholland Dr. is excellent. Review on my blog.

i cannot wait to revisit Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire! and i cannot wait to see Lost Highway for the first time. was just about to maybe pick these up on dvd off of amazon and wait it out, but since they're on blu already and region free? might as well!

speaking of weird, bizarre movies. i blind bought Dogtooth which appears to be quite unique and strange. plan on watching it later tonight with some friends. of course, review will then be posted. for those of you who enjoy surreal works of art that make you think, may wanna look into the film a bit. i know very little, but since i had an amazon gift card it came out to $5.75 after that, so i took the chance. can't wait to see it

^^The trailer for Almodovar's latest film just posted on IMDb. He's a brilliant writer, though his films are a little... unorthodox.

This f***ing disc kept skipping around, so I probably missed out on half of the bloody movie! And Im too lazy to fix the thing. Based on what Ive seen (and because this is Zack freaking Snyder directing), chances are good that Ill get a copy later on.

So, I went into this movie expecting (aside from a disc that actually works) something crazy and weird like RoboGeisha or something. At times, the film approached that level of zaniness; there are a few major fantasy sequences where hot ladies do battle with robotic tengu, mechanical-zombie-Germans, and fantasy creatures, with huge war-torn backdrops, using guns, swords, war machines, and everything else. These scenes are pretty damn imaginative and fun, full of insanely over-the-top stunt-work and special effects. If you crave this type of action, then this film shouldnt disappoint.

However, this film gets a pretty bad rap becausesurprise, it has hot ladies doing battle with crazy thingsand nothing more. All action and sex appeal for the guys, and no substance. Oh God, this movie sucks forever!

But you know whatIm going do something very strange and possibly inappropriate, especially in regards to watching films. Im going to usemy BRAIN!

On the surface, if you take the fantasy scenes at face value, then yes the movie might suck. But I could tell that there was something else beneath the surface. After all, if you take away the fantasy scenes, what do you have? Holy crap, we have a mental-institution-drama with real characters with real problems and vulnerabilities. These scenes may not stick out well next to the far-out fantasies, but they are the real heart of the story. Its pretty much like a cross between Shutter Island and Heavenly Creatures.

So what does it all mean?! My initial interpretation is that this whole film is open mockery of the entertainment industry. If the institution represents a studio, and the girls are filmmakers creating their own fantasies, then it goes to show that everything they (or rather, the filmmakers) make are shallow and pointless. It even goes so far as to mask the violence and language with cheap methods (gotta love how these girls stab a jillion zombies, only to have them bleed steam). But the girls themselves recognize that these dances are hokey; they do it anyway to appease their masters and give them what they want. They also give the audience what they want. Or what they think they want. But in the end, this film challenges the audience and asks, is this really what you want?!

In true Zack Snyder fashion, this film is pure style. You can expect lots of fantastically slick photography and editing, and lots of fantastic special effects. Acting seems decent all around, and the writing is pretty good. Production value looks decent enough, with plenty of distinctive sets, props, and costumes. Music is quite the mixed bag, but some of it is pretty darn cool.

So, if you watch this and complain that its all just video-game/music-video style action and violence with no substanceguess what, its supposed to be, you sucker! If you keep your eyes and mind open, you might just see how the film pulled a fast one on you.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5, intellectual impact: 4/5) Score might increase with repeat viewings.

Now...I'm going to order a good Blu-Ray copy, so I can watch the whole thing and see if the ideas in this review still apply...

EDIT:
Okay, so I pulled the disc out and found some smudgey fingerprints obscuring it. Probably from my own greasy grubby little hands. It was a simple manner to clean it and put it back in.

So I watched the last half in full and got it. Dang, this film has quite a few levels it's working on. I think the Hollywood allegory still exists, but it might also touch upon something metaphysical as well. But at the very least, it's an interesting twist at the end.

I'm glad you joined Squid and I on the side that likes Sucker Punch.

I think one of the strongest things about the movie is the fact that it is open to a great amount of discussion and interpretation. There was a lot of discussion about people's theories on the story in the Sucker Punch review thread when it was out in the theater.

I didn't like it. Thought it was rubbish with not that much deeper meaning to it. It's kinda weird because I liked Snyder's other movies. I think he has to leave the writing to other people from now on.

[Show spoiler]comedy is a tough genre to talk about and recommend. it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and what some people find hilarious, others find obnoxious, shallow, dumb and are turned off by it. also, the subject matter of some comedies can make some people tense up, never laugh and make a 90 minute joyride excruciatingly painful.

so, how does one recommend a comedy?
you really can't. but i'll do my best to not give anything away about Horrible Bosses while explaining why i loved it and hopefully this will either make you want to see it, or say, "you know what, this doesn't sound like something i'd like".

to be blunt - Horrible Bosses is hysterical. absolutely hilarious from start to finish. there was never a scene where i didn't have a gut busting laugh. i don't think 30 seconds ever passed without a great jokes or hilarious tidbit being thrown my way. it's definitely a film that i will have to watch numerous times to catch all the jokes that i missed because i was laughing.

so, what type of funny is Horrible Bosses? a very mixed bag of humor. DARK humor, mind you

the best part of Horrible Bosses is that the humor isn't very "visual". there aren't any (maybe one or two) visual gags that make you laugh. the laughs come from the genius writing and terrific performances of the masterful cast. there are, to my surprise, TONS of sexual innuendo jokes. i figured the "sexual harasser" Julia Harris (Aniston) would have these jokes, but many other characters also supply "gross out" dialogue humor. now, it's done in a "more adult" way that isn't just a simple dick or fart joke. it makes sense in the context of the film and never feels like it's there just to shock us or surprise us or to make us try and laugh. it fits and feels real

each character brings a separate type of comedy and humor to the film. Charlie Day plays Dale, who is the one being sexually harassed by Julia, his boss. of course, Aniston is GORGEOUS, so why is this a problem? because he's engaged. so, yeah, a problem. for some some i can see being annoyed by his constant comments and under the breath, almost fly by the seat of his pants dialogue. it's almost like he doesn't have a script. he's just saying whatever comes to mind. and 95% of it is sure genius. but his character is the one who "screws everything up".

Nick (Bateman) and Kurt (Sudeikis) are more of the "every man" for the audience and while kind of the same, Kurt provides the more goofy, sometimes childish humor (not bad or stupid though) and Nick is the more "adult" sophisticated one with smart, witty one-liners that i found hilarious. fans of The Office or Arrested Development will understand what type of humor he brings to the table. and it all meshes will.

people are already saying that this is "2011's The Hangover" but Horrible Bosses is so much better than The Hangover (imo, and i gave The Hangover a 4/5) and shouldn't be compared. however, i could see similiarities between Dale and Alan and Nick and Phil. it's inevitable, but that's where similarities end pretty much. oh, and also a wacky car chase / crash sequence.

only real complaint is that Colin Farrell doesn't have much screen time. he was awesome and i wanted to see more of him, but he has limited scenes. Kevin Spacey has the most screen time of the bosses, and i felt he had a bit too much, which of course should have gone to Farrell.

Aniston was smoking HAWT and she could make a movie of just her dialogue here that lasted 90 minutes and i would buy it in a heartbeat my god! her dialogue could be (and likely is in many) in any adult film. absolutely jaw dropping sexual references and innuendos galore. so awesome, hilarious and almost cringe worthy in a great way.

oddly enough, i was in an audience with about 15 other couples, 13 of which were over the age of 40, maybe more towards mid-50's! wasn't expecting that. and while they enjoyed it (some clapped at the end) and laughed heartily, during some of the adult heavy dialogue moments, they kind of got awkwardly nervous and tried to stay quiet while i seemed like the perverted young guy all the way up top by himself who was laughing out loud constantly at what was being said.

needless to say, the dialogue by Aniston (and at times some others) will make your mother blush and maybe even you

at 90 minutes, Horrible Bosses flies by. it moves at a brisk pace and never overstays its welcome. i was curious how the film would conclude and i was pleasantly surprised by how fitting it all wrapped up really no major complaints and aside from Farrell not having enough scenes, i can't fault it for anything. not perfect and not the best comedy ever or anything like that, but likely will be the funniest film of 2011. it made me laugh - constantly - and that's all i could ask for from a comedy. many classic lines of dialogue and gems to be found here. some you really gotta pay attention for

what more can i say? if you enjoyed the trailer, you'll enjoy the film. for sure and the best part? almost everything from the trailer is in the first 30 minutes or so! so that gives you another hour of fantastic material to enjoy.

day 1 pick up for me. can't wait to see it again

The Film: 4.5/5
I just saw this and it was good fun. If we're gonna compare, I liked this way better than The Hangover.

It wasn't exactly laugh-out-loud funny, but I liked that it tried to do something new and that it isn't too predictable.

But what I really liked the most were the performances which were really strong all-around. Spacey was his usual awesome self, but Aniston and Charlie Day stole the show. Aniston might shock some people with her role here, but she was hilariously crazy (and really horny the whole time). Day is basically playing Charlie Kelly again in this one, but it's still a pretty funny character. From the looks of it, HB could be a popular comedy this year, which is great for Day, since every year that he gets snubbed for an Emmy is an utter travesty. Colin Farrell was pretty shocking and hilarious as well, but he's more like a cameo here. Jamie Foxx was also a standout despite his short screen time. His character's stories got some the most laughs from the audience. You might also want to stay for the credits.

None of that entered my mind, it felt like pure Snyder experimentation throughout, I just felt as if it didn't work.

Well, the fantasy segments are pure Snyderian. But with the stuff in between, and as I tried to find the meaning, it reminded me of other smart-yet-weird movies.

Yep, this might be one of those rare movies where I encourage the brain to be turned ON.

Yep, I can really only recommend it as a rental. It looks like it'll be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of movie. If you see it, let us know what you think!

oddly enough, i was in an audience with about 15 other couples, 13 of which were over the age of 40, maybe more towards mid-50's! wasn't expecting that. and while they enjoyed it (some clapped at the end) and laughed heartily, during some of the adult heavy dialogue moments, they kind of got awkwardly nervous and tried to stay quiet while i seemed like the perverted young guy all the way up top by himself who was laughing out loud constantly at what was being said.

needless to say, the dialogue by Aniston (and at times some others) will make your mother blush and maybe even you

at 90 minutes, Horrible Bosses flies by. it moves at a brisk pace and never overstays its welcome. i was curious how the film would conclude and i was pleasantly surprised by how fitting it all wrapped up really no major complaints and aside from Farrell not having enough scenes, i can't fault it for anything. not perfect and not the best comedy ever or anything like that, but likely will be the funniest film of 2011. it made me laugh - constantly - and that's all i could ask for from a comedy. many classic lines of dialogue and gems to be found here. some you really gotta pay attention for

what more can i say? if you enjoyed the trailer, you'll enjoy the film. for sure and the best part? almost everything from the trailer is in the first 30 minutes or so! so that gives you another hour of fantastic material to enjoy.

day 1 pick up for me. can't wait to see it again

The Film: 4.5/5
The film's title sounds amusing as it is; the plot sounds like an amusing situation and reminds me of a Coen Bros movie. But, the lack of visual gags and slapstick might make it unappealing to me. To say nothing of the R-rated dialogue...

Good review; I'll probably rent it when it comes to disc, and see if it's really my mind of comedy...

Horrible Bosses

Year: 2011
Director: Seth Gordon
Writers: Michael Markowitz, John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein
Starring: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston & Colin Farrell

comedy is a tough genre to talk about and recommend. it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and what some people find hilarious, others find obnoxious, shallow, dumb and are turned off by it. also, the subject matter of some comedies can make some people tense up, never laugh and make a 90 minute joyride excruciatingly painful.

so, how does one recommend a comedy?
you really can't. but i'll do my best to not give anything away about Horrible Bosses while explaining why i loved it and hopefully this will either make you want to see it, or say, "you know what, this doesn't sound like something i'd like".

to be blunt - Horrible Bosses is hysterical. absolutely hilarious from start to finish. there was never a scene where i didn't have a gut busting laugh. i don't think 30 seconds ever passed without a great jokes or hilarious tidbit being thrown my way. it's definitely a film that i will have to watch numerous times to catch all the jokes that i missed because i was laughing.

so, what type of funny is Horrible Bosses? a very mixed bag of humor.

Dogtooth

94 minutes

Year: 2009
Director: Giorgos Lanthimos
Writer: Giorgos Lanthimos & Efthymis Filippou
Starring: Christos Stergioglou, Michele Valley, Aggeliki Papoulia, Mary Tsoni, Christos Passalis & Anna Kalaitzidou

Do you know what dad will do if he knows I lick your keyboard?

This film aint gonna come recommended because Im not even real sure how I feel about yet its been about 11 hours or so since I finished watching it. If one thing is for certain, if you give Dogtooth a chance, more than likely, it will require multiple viewings to digest and understand. At least, understand to some extent.

The basic premise is as follows: three adult aged children (well, they seem all around the ages of 17-20) live with their parents in almost a utopian existence. Theyve never leaved the property, know nothing of the outside world, have only met one other person besides their parents, and are told blatant lies about what certain objects are called. As an example, the word zombies here means, small yellowish flower. And female genitalia is called keyboard (so go ahead and read that quote at the top of the page again )

The father brings a female friend over to the house for his son to have sex with and throughout the course of the film it is made clear that the son is the favorite of the household. He and his two siblings have contests constantly to win prizes and the son always seems to win.

The family owns a dog, but the dog is at a five step training class. the kids seem to be in the same training class...

It seems, at least on first viewing, that the reason the kids are kept inside, is because the parents are preparing them for something. What? Nothings ever really made clear or explained. Simply put, I know parents who freak out about having their kids grow up and experience things (as Ive said before I had a friend who only was allowed to watch Hook until he a freshmen in high school!) and try to control their every action, so its easy to understand on one hand what the parents are doing. Of course, the film goes off the deep end and presents us with scenarios no parent would do (at least Id hope not!), and some may see these scenes as exploitative, but I dont think I do.

Dogtooth was an interesting film to watch. But it doesnt make it a great film. At least, not after one viewing for me.

Acting is okay, nothing special. But the biggest blunder is the lack of music. My god, the lack of music drags the film to a slow crawl at times and it really feels like a collage of scenes with no rhyme or reason of gel to them. Which sucks because with music at least A LITTLE BIT the film would have felt much better and had a much better atmosphere. As it stands, it feels cold and distant. Yes, like the kids to the real world, but still. These 94 minutes could quite a bit to get through.

Luckily I got this for $5.75. thats about as much as I would spend on this. Even $10 would have pissed me off!

Its dark, cruel in a weirdo almost humorous way sometimes while also just being shocking and a bit repulsive in others. The cover says, HILARIOUS! but its far from that. I think I chuckled once or twice, but thats it. Its not a quirky comedy. Its a dark drama. Its a weird drama. Proceed with caution.

The Film: 3/5

^^The trailer for Almodovar's latest film just posted on IMDb. He's a brilliant writer, though his films are a little... unorthodox.
looks like a weird James Bond movie or something. and the main guy they show looks a bit like this guy from Solaris ('72)

I saw the trailer and some clips for Horrible Bosses.

Jennifer Aniston constantly coming on to you and walking around her office topless (with coat) and in her underwear...and he plans to kill her.

This movie has no sense of realism AT ALL

I never thought of that. Absurd.

Today's blog entry reveals the Top 5 in my list of favorite science fiction movies. Rango will be up tomorrow.

My Top 20 science fiction movies (continued)

If you have been following this series, youll know numbers 6-20 in my Top 20. My tastes wont appeal to everyone. Im sure most people would include a couple of Star Wars movies in their own Top 20, while others might like Jurassic Park. The good news is you can just ignore my opinion and buy both when they hit Blu-ray later this year.

Here are my five favorite science fiction movies:

5. I Am Legend (2007)
Directed by Francis Lawrence
Starring Will Smith, Alice Braga and Charlie Tahan

Will Smith was a good choice for the role of Robert Neville. His character looks like he can take care of himself, but he also looks intelligent enough to conduct scientific experiments. Im fond of post-apocalyptic stories because they encourage me to think. What would life be like if you lived without any human contact? Where would you find food? How would you spend your time? What would your purpose in life be? Neville has adapted to his solitary existence and seeks a cure for the infection which has affected most of the human race. I find it interesting watching actors carry a movie. Tom Hanks had to do it in Cast Away and James Franco had a similar role in 127 Hours. Both are stories that I keep revisiting. I Am Legend has extended periods of quiet reflection as we are shown how Neville lives. When he does encounter somebody, his reaction is believable. The special effects arent entirely convincing, but I still love visiting Nevilles world. Theres a little action thrown in, but this is mainly a thought-provoking psychological study. The Blu-ray has been out a while, but the presentation is almost reference quality.

4. Avatar (2009)
Directed by James Cameron
Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver

Heres a movie that you wont have to think about at all. The dialogue is dumb and the second half of the movie is just a standard science fiction battle sequence. So why do I like it? The look of the movie is incredible and genuinely makes me feel like Im visiting an alien world. Theres also an excellent sequence which lasts for about an hour in which Jake Sully (Worthington) meets some of the native population and learns how they live. The training sequence is easily the most interesting part of the story and I never tire of watching it. Avatar isnt a great movie; its a piece of entertainment which appeals to a vast number of people. Sometimes, thats exactly what I want. There isnt a better looking Blu-ray than this and its pure escapism. I prefer the extended version which explains a couple of things in more depth and ties up an important loose end.

There's a full review in this thread or on my blog.

3. The Matrix (1999)
Directed by Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski
Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss

The Matrix is a strange movie. Although it seems like an obvious story on the surface, there are a number of deeper themes if you choose to dig deeper. When it was released, it looked like something that had never been seen before. The use of slow motion adds to the overall feel and the special effects are still pretty cool. Its an exciting ride in which Neo (Reeves) learns the truth about his existence. We see that theres nothing he cant do once he has been exposed to the relevant training, and that knowledge is downloaded in seconds. The story is also about belief in your own ability and acceptance of the real situation, as well as philosophical layers that make you question things such as religion and fate. The movie is an exercise in style, but it works well because of the action, effects and acting. Reeves is often ridiculed for his acting ability, but hes certainly a good choice. Hes not meant to know anything, and he plays it exactly right. The Blu-ray release is decent considering the age of the movie and some of the chase sequences will fully test your home theater system.

2. Inception (2010)
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page

Christopher Nolan delivers good movies on a consistent basis and hasnt disappointed me so far. Im not a fan of comic book characters, but Batman Begins and The Dark Knight took the genre to a different level. The Prestige and Memento are presented in an intriguing way and both are among my favorites. Inception is arguably Nolans most ambitious effort to date. The plot is complex and it must have taken a long time to get things exactly right. I imagine that many viewers wont understand everything that happens and Nolan doesnt dumb things down. Inception could work on some level even if you dont grasp the whole story. Its a visual feast with stunning special effects happening at several different rates of speed. The acting is good and there is no shortage of action. The ambiguous ending angered some, but I quite like it. This is a movie that I already love after two viewings, and Im looking forward to seeing it again.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood and William Sylvester

This is a prime example of how my tastes have changed over the years. The first time I saw 2001, I think I fell asleep. When I revisited it on cable many years later, I couldnt get past the first act with the apes. But in recent years, I have started to appreciate what Kubrick achieved. The first thing to remember is what science fiction movies were like before 2001 was released in 1968. Most were laughable, predictable and not even remotely believable. Kubricks film completely changed the genre. Its epic in scope, spanning around 6,000 years, and over half of the film is told without the use of dialogue. It may be easy to show apes or people floating around without gravity with the use of modern special effects, but consider what was available in 1968; even making a pen appear to float was a challenge. Actors had to dress up as apes and study the movements of real animals to produce the opening act. Kubricks use of music was another innovation. Think about the docking sequence and how Kubrick made it seem like a dance. He also got the details right. How many directors would have shown an explosion in space without sound? Its not an easy film to watch by any means. If you go in expecting action, youll be sorely disappointed. Its a film that will stay with you a long time after you see it and might even encourage you to investigate some of the deeper themes. If you dont know what the monoliths represent, its interesting finding out. The story does make sense when you take the time to research it, and its a work of genius. It also contains my favorite cut sequence, when a bone is thrown in the air and we move on to the next act. Im sure a lot of people have never seen 2001, while others may have seen it and written it off as meaningless or boring. If thats the case, I urge you to look at it again. It has to be the most influential science fiction film ever made. How many times have you heard Thus Spake Zarathustra when watching a documentary about space? Its actually a piece of art as much as it is a film. The Blu-ray looks stunning considering the age of the film.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment or post your own favorites.
