Hanna

Rented it on DVD DVD is so crappy, I want my PS3 fixed pronto!

But the film...

I really don't know where to begin, and that's not really a very good thing

I was really looking forward to checking this out, it's an anti-Diesel action film, zero explosions, few bullets fires, just a few fist fights and a whiff of pretention around it. So when it ended, and there was just a plain lack of impact when it reached the end, and I was impressed by the camerawork and acting of such, but the film was never all that engaging to me. It's similar to staring at a painting that looks great, stylish, and nothing you've ever seen before, but you just don't feel anything towards it, therefore, it just comes across as a huge waste.

The film is not bad, it's brilliant, it's dark, shocking and awesome. With fantastic camera work, with a lot of scenes being done in one shot. Set designs are fantastic, and allow for a lot of creative mind tricks on the viewer. The soundtrack done by The Chemical Brothers is eargasmic good, and the stunt choreography is by none the best of the year, and all these will make me pick up the film on Blu-Ray at a later date (cheaper obviously)

But the film looses me with it's lack of consistency, one moment it's a dark thriller with an emotionless little girl being hunted down, and the 30 mins in it's a coming of age story with Hanna going around on a self-discovery journey to which the film becomes very light hearted, to brooding twisted thriller territory to the end, which neither of the two things feel like they get resolved.

There is also a really annoying little British girl, who without a doubt in 2 years time will be hanging out on the park with a bottle of vodka in her hand pregnant.

Hanna had all the stuff in there to make a visual stunning film, but there just feels like there is a lack of emotion, which could quite possibly be what the film was intending, but when it ends, I want to love your film or hate it, the fact that at the end, I just felt nothing, just feels like a waste, and it's tragic to think how impressive the film is technically.

This is a pretty spot-on review. I felt the same way about the movie. Everything about it is exceptional: the cast, the music, the cinematography, the direction, even the bookend; I appreciated them all and as a whole, I should have loved it, but I didn't. I just thought it was okay, but there's definitely that feeling that it could have been a much better movie. It just felt hallow and lacking in heart. I think this movie is a perfect example about how you could execute every single aspect perfectly, but if it doesn't have enough heart, the sum just ends up being average and respectable. A good movie is one that has heart.

I watched this again for the second time on TV and I liked it a little more than my first viewing (I also gave it a 7/10). But the lack of emotion is still there.

Kingdom of Heaven
[Show spoiler]
Been feeling like watching this one for a little while now, and finally had time today to squeeze in a 3 hour movie.

I thought for sure I had reviewed this one before, but when I searched through the thread, all I found was a post that said, "Previously reviewed" and one that said basically "You guys were right, Director's Cut was better than Theatrical" from early 2010.

Well, better late than never eh?

For anyone who doesn't know, the movie follows Balian (Orlando Bloom...wait! Don't let that scare you off!) a blacksmith. Balian is in a pretty low place when the film opens. His wife is dead (suicide) and he's pretty zoned out about it. Crusaders from Jerusalem come to town and bring him some unexpected news. He soon sets out with them to the Holy Land to seek absolution of his sins.

The theatrical cut of this movie was a "good" movie, but the director's cut is a great movie. It's a good thing that it is the only version available on blu-ray

The film is very well written...aside from some of Balian's INCREDIBLY repetitive dialog late in the film. I don't know if it is the hokey sounding lines, the sheer amount of repetition of it or Bloom's delivery, but it gets a tad irritating.
The main characters are all interesting...especially the king (masterfully played by Edward Norton).

The battle scenes aren't the best you'll ever see, but they are good.

As I've made note of many times, I'm not the biggest appreciator of scores in movies. I can't recall what the music is like in most films outside of the ones with fantastic scores (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings, etc.). I wouldn't say this one is anywhere near those but there are a few musical moments that are memorable.

If you still haven't seen it even with all of us talking about this, Troy, Gladiator and Braveheart all of the time...go watch it. I believe last time we discussed it Bearcat still hadn't seen it

Rating - 4.75/5
I need to re-watch Kingdom of Heaven sometime after things settle down with all of the releases coming out. It didn't blow me away when I watched it, but that was partially because it was a little different than I expected. I definitely see it becoming a movie I really like now that I know what to expect from it. Even though it didn't blow me away, I know the pieces are there.

I hope I disagree with this as I have it coming from Amazon on Thursday. I only skimmed through the review of course since this was a blind buy.

Great opening. I love the frost covering the grass in europe. I shivered in my Florida living room, while it was 110 outside. Bloom plays a pretty good "zoned out" (good term) Balian at the start. What I love the most is that simple, small setting of where he makes the swords, with the house next door where his dad (Nieson) was with his mom. There are 2 different sequences that are great here: (1) Bloom looks out at the front yard and sees himself with his wife (before she dies) and they're happy and playing in the yard, then the camera goes to his face (smiling) and through a timing sequence, shows his face go from happy/young/bright to sad/aging/depressed. (2) same with Nieson looking out over teh same yard at his then wife (BLooms mom). Terrific timing sequences that show a lot about the characters: who they were and who they are now.

what repetitive dialog? I missed that. he definitely has a repetitive message to deliver: his mission as given to him from his dad: defend the helpless (knight code). so perhaps that is why he seems repetitive: his mission is cut and dry (as it should be). he talks to the king, the "casino royale chick" (name? ), and the character played by jeremy irons , all with the same message of
[Show spoiler]"let's do what we can here to protect the helpless"
.

actually, ironically this is why i like Kingdom of Heaven: it doesn't rely/lean on the action as much, to tell its story. it relies more on the historical/religious themes of the times, which were fascinating. like you, I love the King played by Norton. His best lines were: "the whole of word is in chess, move anywhere from where you started and you cant be sure of your end....were you sure of your end?". then balian responds. the king then says my favorite part: "a king may move a knight, a father may move a son, but ultimately each man moves himself. it won't suffice to say 'others made me do thus'...this will not suffice." great words here. and has application way outside religion. if someone has bad luck, the tendency is to BLAME OTHERS. but the king is saying: "no, you chose the path you chose - nobody else chose it for you"

I know what "moment" you're referring to and its playing in my head right now. seriously! beats and a woman singing in the background. its on the blu-ray menu screen.

everyone knows the proper ranking:
1. Kingdom of Heaven 5/5 (grew on me. love the setting, themes of religious warfare, and characters)
2. Braveheart 4.75/5 (probably tied with Gladiator, but since I lived in Ireland for over a decade, that's a tie breaker that part of the world all looks the same)
3. Gladiator 4.5/5
4. Last Samurai 4.25/5 (unique in that it shows a generational "old v. new" battle and a pretty deep cultural war in Japan)
5. Patriot 4/5 (to Diesel: IMO this does hold up to repeated viewings. Gibson is great, as are the guys playing Cornwallace and his assistant. Has a good mix of humor thrown in to mix it up, and some U.S. History (dramatized of course) also thrown in. hard not to love this buffet of an experience. Plus the PQ IS SICK!! )
.
.
.
18,985. Troy (Brad Pitt playing Achillies is like Sylvester Stallone playing Forrest Gump)

I dare not tread into those most horrific waters.

Why is that not on the cover?!

Then there is the THIRD sequence at that spot with
[Show spoiler]Balian and Sibylla (Eva Green...which is the name you are looking for two sections down from this ) at the end of the film.

I can't recall what wasn't in the theatrical at this point either as I've not seen it in quite a long time now.

That is easily a candidate for best scene in the film. It's no lower than Top 3.

Ah, here we are once again at the differing ratings

...but wait...what's this?! The Patriot has never been included before!

Gladiator - 5/5 (One of my Top 15 movies)

Kingdom of Heaven - 4.75/5 (Probably would follow not too far below if I actually ranked past 15)

The Patriot - 4.5/5 (Only seen this one time...rating could easily go down upon repeat. I'll get back to this one eventually)

Braveheart - 4.5/5 (Great...but One and Done Collection)

Last Samurai - 4/5 (Originally a 5/5...lost a LOT of its luster on repeat viewings)

Troy - ...um...I don't remember if I gave it a 3.5 or a 3. (Moderately enjoyable)

Taxi Driver - 5/5

Must own classic. Robert DeNiro is excellent as the iconic cabbie Travis who views (and judges) the world from the safety of his cab. He's a voyeur in a world of scum, loses it and goes all rogue badass, does what he feels he needs to do, and then walks away a hero in the end. Awesome.
Forgot to review this blu. WOW!! Great PQ/AQ for a 1976 flick. I watched the extras where the screenwriter (Paul ?) discussed some awesome themes , such as how he conceived of the taxi cab idea:
[Show spoiler]a moving metal coffin carrying a corpse. obviously, he means emotionally/spirtually dead.
. he then said the most powerful words of the extras, which solidfy Travis BIckle:
[Show spoiler]: "that idea - of not getting what you want and not wanting what you have - is the lonely man. but he doesn't just become lonely, he makes himself lonely. Travis makes himself lonely."
. epic epic stuff.

best scene: deniro taking cybil to the porn theater, and when she says "this a dirty movie!!", deniro's epic response: "oh no, lots of couples come here. its great."

bickle = the effin man.

Saw this a while ago in a film class I was taking and I don't remember too much of it but it was a trippy film for sure. I enjoyed it so I definitely want to revisit this one someday, I remember that Dennis Hopper was awesome!

Cowboys & Aliens

Film: ?/5

-huh? surf has no rating for the movie? huh?
-let me explain this very simply: i was with this girl on a first date and (deviously) chose the back row, end seats.
-she paid more attention than me.
-if you asked me what it was about, I could only say who was in it , that it has cowboys and aliens in it...nothing more than in the trailer
-lesson learned: only go on dates for films you've already seen!
-WORST PART OF THE NIGHT: her telling me it was a great movie and WHY. My response: "uh....right". If she ONLY KNEW my movie review stature

Troy - ...um...I don't remember if I gave it a 3.5 or a 3. (Moderately enjoyable)
wow, so sounds like only Gladiator and KOH have stood up to the "Diesel repeated viewings" test. You seem to like Ridley Scott. Do you like Blade Runner/Alien? Just curious.

Yeah jvince basically wrapped it up pretty well I would recommend seeing it, but I'm afraid I'm really glad I rented it over buying it

Also going to watch Submarine today

Now Submarine is a different thing. Like Hanna, it was flawed, but I liked it more because it had some heart. It was also shot very nicely, and I really liked that they used different kinds of cameras from different times. Ayoade borrows a bit from the styles of Wes Anderson and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, which was fine with me since I like both directors. It's also divided into several acts, and I felt that the first act is just pure indie rom-com perfection; I was smiling the entire duration (If Submarine was a short film spanning only the first act, I'd add it to my collection without a doubt). But the following acts don't quite measure up to it, sadly. Alex Turner's soundtrack is amazingly good though. Very Humbug/Suck It and See. Richard Ayoade and Joe Wright are talents to watch. Both will make a truly great film someday.

Submarine

I really really loved it!

It's awe-inspiringly shot, with a great script to boot. There is something very lighthearted to the film although it loves to portray itself as very gloomy, with very few moments of actual happiness, it's the sort of film you can have on in the background and glance over to see a simple indie film, but if you take a deeper look it's quite brutally realistic.

I disagree with the fact that the acts fail to follow up of the first in terms of quality, I think they are all really good, with the happy moments all in the first act, and then the stuff starting to go down hill in the second act. I don't think the other two acts are quite as fast paced as the first, although that just shows that the good times fly meanwhile the bad times linger.

The characters are very subtle in their portrayal, as throughout the film, they slowly pick away at themselves showing more and more through contact with others. It's wonderfully presented, and characters feel like they have a realistic development and change. The only character who doesn't seem to change for the most part is the main character, who throughout the film is basically picking and choosing what to do next to get what he wants, and this follows through right until the end, where I thought he would learn his lesson, but the epilogue kicks in, and as much as that wrap up felt unnecessary and ruins that end thought, it still so nicely portrayed and presented by Richard Ayoade that I can't ***** about it

I loved Submarine, I think many people on here will love it, probably more Bearcat and Squid than Diesel and Killowertz, but I recommend to anyone and everyone because it is just that damn good!

10/10

We established some posts ago that "Blade Runner" fails the Diesel test.

It passed Al's test though. I've now seen 4 out of the 5 cuts offered on Blu-Ray.

Hi guys, just watched Your Highness.

Man what a waste of time, the only remotely funny parts were in the trailer and it was very dull for the rest of it. Seriously disappointed that despite the good cast, all of whom I like, it still turned out so bad! Also the same director as Pineapple Express, which I LOVED!

Ah well, I guess they can't all be good.
