"They" being the top, most respected critics. Rotten Tomatoes aggregates scores of top critics. The Shining 88%, Blair Witch 85%. Of course websites saying The Shining is overrated are a dime a dozen.

Not sure what doctors opinions on dental products means, but ok.

I just dont follow critics when evaluating music, film , restaurants , whatever.

Its an illusion. Its one community of folks making judgement.
I dont have to subscribe to their standards.

And I don't follow people on internet forums when it comes to their opinion of a movie as "mediocre art".

Now couldnt you have just disagreed with me in the first place and say u feel that Blair Witch is in the same league as The Shining without invoking someone else's opinion?

We can agree to disagree. Nothing personal.

The Shining isn't in the same league as Blair Witch. One had a huge star, famous director, best selling author and book tied to it. The other had no star, no budget, became a huge media sensation and introduced a new genre of movie making. Take Nicholson out of the Shining and put in a no name and this movie would have none of the hype, it would be another Stephan King crappy movie.

So, sure, we can of course disagree.

Maybe not, but do you trust a realtor to show you the best houses? Your stock broker to recommend the best investments? Your doctor when he or she prescribes a diagnosis?

Its the same idea... film critics — the good ones, not the quote hounds — are knowledgable about film, more than you or I will ever be. I'ts their job, what they've studied, just like any profession. That's why their opinion is put out there... and yes, it's just an opinion, but you should be able to take their comments and make an informed decision on your own. I think people who are serious about cinema should follow critics, not for their likes/dislikes per se, but for their knowledge and insight.

Once again I fail to see how a "new" movie genre and the internet equates with the actual art. Kubrick's innovative and early use of the Streadycam shouldnt factor into this at all.

Using Critics to back your opinion VS. stating your own tastes and opinions.

Agreed. I think any lover of film can fine some redeeming qualities in at least one Kubrick film. I love every single one of his movies.

So what's the question? Is The Shining good? Absolutely.

Any time you see a viral campaign about a movie touting its found footage, that goes back to Blair Witch.
Blair Witch didnt inspire a whole genre. they only thing it did is make filmmakers realize they didnt really have to put forth the effort of a big hollywood production to get asses in seats. lets not pretend Blair Witch was the first 'found footage' movie.
The Shining however, as well as Kubricks entire filmography, DID influence an entire generation of filmmakers. most of which wouldnt hesitate to tell you so.

Yes, the found footage film dates back to (as far as I know) Cannibal Holocaust, but Blair Witch made it a marketable and relevant genre. But I hesitate to say The Shining itself influenced much — it didn't inspire rip-offs and usher in a whole new way of telling stories, although Kubrick's use of Steadicam was groundbreaking at the time. I like The Shining okay and hate Blair Witch, but BW had much more influence on horror and the state of modern cinema than The Shining ever did.

yes, I've seen countless hat-tips to Kubrick in horror films. the most recent being Triangle, where room 237 is used again.

What did Kubrick do in The Shining that equates with "actual" art?

Uh huh. Yeah I saw it. Have you seen any of the criticisms that its over rated?
Basically, Jack is great, the rest of the movie is superficial. It being a work of art is not a universal notion. I saw one list where someone said it was overrated and they wished it was only 1/5000 as good as the Simpsons version. lol
