Anyways, for anyone on the fence, I got through almost half of the Fanny and Alexander tv series yesterday. IMO, as compared to the CC dvd, it is a very nice upgrade. Color is very prevalent in this release and the BD really shines, along with the overall clarity as compared to the dvd. Usually, I will buy the BD, if I already own the dvd, and see if it is worth the upgrade. If it does not 'wow' me, I usually sell the BD, but in this case, the opposite will happen. A very nice release for anyone that owns the dvd and is curious.
Nah, you were apparently only one of my minor minions, I'm the evil overlady/Lady Hitler of all that apparently.

I'm glad to hear that about the Fanny and Alexander release. My friend has been wanting it for so long now, and had to place a second order for it, as B&N cancelled his first one. If this one ships though, it's such a shame that he has to wait a month or so to get it, being Canadian and all.

Did you bother to order 12 Angry Men as well?

Assuming it will be a set with Alice In The Cities/The Wrong Move/Kings of the Road/The American Friend (or maybe a Road Movie Trilogy box set and the American Friend released separately?). I'm pleasantly surprised these aren't being dumped into an Eclipse set. Still patiently waiting for Until The End of the World, too. I hope I don't have to wait until November for this one.

RIP Peter Przygodda
THANKS Joe! Good to see you again...it's been a while!

The American Friend is also my favorite Wenders film...how can you go wrong with Ganz, Hopper, and Ray in the same film? A boxset would be very welcome!

Is Town Without Pity out on BD yet? It seems like a title that would fit well within the collection, and group well with 12 Angry Men and Anatomy of a Murder. It's a MGM/Mirisch Productions/United Artists title, so it's a possibility.

I did order it along with Rushmore(one of the better Andersons and curious to its PQ) from Criterion. I get some non-sale titles direct from Criterion. Their prices are only a few dollars more than Amazon, but unlike Amazon, they reward me in the long run with a $50 gift card that I usually use on 2 releases, or an Eclipse set.

It really wasn't until The Hustler and Dr. Strangelove that he began to get more "meaty" roles like his Claude Dancer role in Anatomy of a Murder, as in important roles, not chronological order for films.

Fun fact: He was married twice to Colleen Dewhurst, aka Marilla Cuthbert from the Anne of Green Gables mini-series, Murphy Brown's mother, and Kate from The Cowboys. They were married from 1960-65, and had two kids, and then they married again from 1967-1972.
Thanks for the info BG...never realized he was married to Dewhurst. Was he married to someone else from 1965-1967, or just single for 2 years?

Absolutely agreed on Karl Malden. A GREAT actor and most definitely underappreciated for his role as Gen. Omar Bradley in Patton. HE had the luxury of having the real Omar Bradley on the set as an advisor for the film. I had the rare pleasure of seeing him on a trip to California as a teen, filming a scene from "The Streets of San Franciso"...screeching a car to a halt and jumping out of the car. He stumbled on his first attempt...the crowd gathered cheered him and he lovingly tipped his hat to us. He seemed like a nice guy!

Thanks John! I've already watched the theaterical version and will save the TV version for over the Thanksgiving weekend. I really like Peter Cowie and want to rewatch it with his commentary soon.

Yup, if they do a 40% off all Blu-rays sale $39.99 Criterions come out to $17.28 before sales tax after a hypothetical 20% off member coupon.

3-for-2 sale if you buy three $39.99 Criterions they'll be $18.13 each before sales tax, after use of hypothetical 20% member coupon, 15% non-member coupon, and $5 off $50 member coupon.

I remember seeing an additional 10% off on one of the 3-for-2 sales. It said "CLASSCODE" or something on my receipt. If that is the case each Criterion will be $16.15 before sales tax, but after use of hypothetical 20% member coupon, 15% non-member coupon, and $5 off $50 member coupon.

YMMV of course getting all three coupons to take and there's no guarantee of a 20% member coupon or 15% non-member coupon, but judging from past sales there should be at least one % off coupon. We know you have to buy at least three to get one free so there's a good chance your total will exceed $50 if you're buying Criterions. The $5 off $50 coupon doesn't expire until 01/22/2012.

Of course none of this has been confirmed, but it’s fun to speculate.

50% off all Criterions still wins, unless we see some high % off coupons during a 3-for-2 sale.

$39.99 Criterions become $18 after membership discount, $14.40 after 20% off member coupon before sales tax of course.

The days of a mystery 50% off member and non-member coupons are probably over. Stacking those on top a 3-for-2 sale yielded three Criterions for a little over $30. Doubt we'll see that again.

I'm on the fence with Rushmore for right now...I saw it in the theater when it was first released and do plan to pick it up in the near future. Just spending too much money on films now and am trying to cut back. I've still got part of an Amazon gift card left and am debating as to what to purchase with it.

Scott was having a relationship with Ava Gardner during that two year period, and it was a pretty nasty one. He was "Manny" to Gardner's "Laura," to put it bluntly.

Karl Malden is underappreciated period. I love the man, and everything he's been in. This may sound silly, but I loved his turn as Judge Higgins in the 1967 Disney film, The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin, which also featured Roddy McDowell, Suzanne Pleshette, and Richard Hayden. I also watched him recently in Dead Ringer with Bette Davis and Peter Lawford, and he was again, excellent. He's in so many classic films, but he's often overlooked for the "other stars."

I wish we could just get Criterion titles year round at decent prices instead of having to wait for sales.

Also what is Amazon's deal on pricing. The differences in their prices are sometimes rather extreme. For instance 12 Angry Men and Design for Living on Criterion's site are both $31.96. Yet Amazon has 12 Angry men for $27.99 and Design For Living at $35.99.
Just drives me crazy.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm not in the Criterion thread very often so I can't keep up!

I want to get Sanjuro/Yojimbo tonight, 50% off would make it $35. I JUST got an email with a coupon that says "Save an EXTRA 30% off one item" Is this coupon valid for the Criterion sale? Can I use it to get Sanjuro/Yojimbo for $25? Has anyone got this same email and tried? Or is it a YMMV kind of thing? Thanks!

EDIT: I'm sorry, I swore I went into the Barnes and Noble Criterion Sale thread, I will ask this there, I'm sorry everyone for not paying attention.

If you didn't jump on the cheaper pre-order of Anatomy of a Murder, why not that? Also, if you didn't pre-order 12 Angry Men yet, again, that would be an excellent choice.

Funny you mention this one, just saw it not long ago on DVD

Karl Madden was a great character actor, you never saw him, you saw what he was playing. It wasn't about the mystic of who he was like certain actor but what he was doing. I find I prefer these type of actors more then those who are about their persona more then the role they are playing

Does it say it's on a certain book? If it's a general 30% off coupon you're probably good to go. I've never had a cashier deny a % off coupon.

Go for it!

$69.99 * 0.50 brings it down to $35.00, add 10% membership discount, you're looking at $31.50, add your 30% off coupon, $22.05 plus your % sales tax.

So final cost of $22.05 plus sales tax if everything goes as planned,

Indiana has a sales tax of 7%, correct?

$23.59 after 7% sales tax.

I own that DVD, it's one of the rare "classic" live-action Disney films to get a widescreen DVD treatment. It was a blind buy out of the 10 dollar bin at Wal-Mart a few years ago. It's one of my favourite Disney movies.

I don't know, their pricing jumps around so much too. 400 Blows used to be 35 bucks, now it's 25 bucks. I can never keep straight as to when to order, and who I'm ordering from, because they often display the Marketplace price over their own first.

I should have asked, are you a Barnes & Noble member?

If not you'll lose the 10% off membership discount in-store and free expedited shipping option online.

I know, money is getting tighter as the holidays approach. The kids get even more demanding as we get closer...

Rich, the only 2 Wes dvd's I have are Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums, as they are the only 2 I think are any good ( I know, here comes the s##tstorm...) But I always like to see if the BD is a vast improvement and this seems like it may be. If not, I usually keep my dvd as the extras are normally identical to the upgrade and unload the BD, as they usually sell used for about what you paid for it.

Too late! I just hope they honor the pricing on that and World on a Wire, which I also preordered. I did use the first $27.99 and preordered 12 Angry Men, as I had intended to do all along.

Thanks for the incentive! It will pair very nicely with 12 Angry Men!
