Apparently he has gained a lot of weight this year, which made him a lot less agile, so they were thinking about moving him to either 3rd bass or center field even during last season. It didn't happen then obviously, but this Reyes signing makes it quite obvious he's going to play a different position come next season.

It's the opposite direction I thought they'd take.
Valentine was chosen by Larry Lucchino, who is the real guy pulling the strings in Boston.

I think the Marlins have also offered Pujols a huge contract. Probably still nowhere close to the dollars and years he wants, but they seem serious about making a splash when they open their new ballpark.

I'm starting to wonder if Pujols is going to get near the money he expected. It seems like the only teams interested in him are the Marlins, Cubs, and Cardinals and the Cubs are interested in Fielder as well so if they go that route then I don't see a bidding war breaking out between the Marlins and Cards. Last year they were talking about Pujols potentially getting a $300 million contract but if there are only 2 teams interested Pujols might not get to $250 million. The Marlins initial offer to Pujols was under $200 million and I can't see them being able to afford much more than that with the money they've committed to Reyes and closer Heath Bell (3-years, $27 million), and the Marlins are also interested in C.J. Wilson and Mark Buehrle, although it doesn't sound like they'll be able to get Buehrle because he is adamant about having a no-trade clause and the Marlins refuse to give players no-trade clauses. The state of Florida has never really supported their baseball teams so if the Marlins spend $300 million and still don't get fans I see a fire sale coming in a few years and them going back to their cheap ways.

According to TSN out of Toronto, Prince Fielder has narrowed his choice of possible destinations down to three...The Brewers, Rangers and Jays.

Fielder and Bautista would make an awesome duo.

How could I forget Lawrie. But Lind, not so much. Back to back sub .300 obp seasons is not good at all. Homerun or bust is a terrible approach.

It was just announced that Ron Santo has been elected to the Hall of Fame by the Golden Era Committee. It's a shame he isn't alive to see this.

What's this? Manny wants back in the league now? Hahaha, that bum! I bet he can still hit, though....you guys think a team will pick him up (even though he'll have to sit out 50 games)?

Oh please, please let us sign him. We might finally be able to compete for the division!

Aren't the Dodgers still paying him?

Sad to say but I'll bet someone picks that fool up. I have no idea why he's doing this.

You'd still need some real pitching improvements too.

I wish the Giants had money to sign one of these star players, but we still have to extend lincecum & Cain, Panda will get good money if he repeats last year, BUT we still need some bats bad! our stellar pitching can only take us so far

Stupid Barry Zito killing our chances of signing a big bat

As long as he leaves the NL Central. I hope the Jays do sign him. They could have something special up there.

If you need pitching, we have a Venezualen hot head on the North Side that you can grab for a bargin.

It's about damn time. Cubs fans all around the world are celebrating today. I'm strongly considering driving up to Cooperstown for the ceremony.

Santo was a terrific player and great all-around guy. Too bad he didn't survive long enough to enjoy it.

Ron Santo elected to Hall of Fame

It took 32 years, but Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo was elected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday with 93.8 percent of the vote from the Golden Era committee.

Nominees needed at least 75 percent of the vote to be elected (12 or more). Santo was the only player chosen for the Hall of Fame, receiving 15 of 16 votes. Jim Kaat received 10 votes, while Gil Hodges and Minnie Minoso received nine each.

Santo never came close to election during his 15 times on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot, peaking at 43 percent -- far short of the needed 75 percent in his last year of eligibility in 1998.

Santo will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 22, along with any players elected by members of the BBWAA on Jan. 9. Bernie Williams joins Jack Morris, Barry Larkin and others on that ballot.

"This is a great day for baseball and for Cubs fans everywhere," MLB commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "I am thrilled that the memory of my dear friend Ron Santo will be preserved forever in the halls of Cooperstown. As a star player and a beloved broadcaster, Ron was a staple of the Cubs' experience every single day for decades, representing all the goodwill of both the franchise and the game he loved.
