On the TV show who wants to be a Millionaire, the (Muslim) Hero is asked aquestion by the TV host: "What weapons does Lord Rama bear in his hands?"Our (Muslim) Hero answers: "If there was no Rama, my Mother would have been alive." Again, imagine the outcry that would have resulted if the Hero was a Hindu from Kashmir and he had said: "If there was no Allah (PBUH), my Mother would be alive." (Islamic terrorism has almost wiped out the Hindu population in Kashmir)
But he does! I'm going from memory, but he says, "If there was no Rama or Allah, my mother would be alive."

And the religious riots that are depicted in the movie happened.

This was such a small part of this movie it didn't even stand out in my mind till i came to this thread, i saw his mother killed in a religious attack, ok and i moved on, not far fetched, it stood out to me more that they were orphaned in such a violent way then omg those hindu's are so mean to muslims mmkay lol, and i wasn't looking for a history lesson, i was looking for a fun different flick, but of course those with religious stakes will find issue with something like this, and i suggest personal bias is left at the door before viewing this as it was a great movie regardless of your beliefs.

Thanks for the response...krazeyeyez I totally agree with your POV See here in India a lot of unnecessary hue n cry was raised over depiction of Mumbai..it's slums...religion..in the film. Columns...Blogs...articles...interviews by big Bollywood names all speaking against the film...rather using it as an excuse to being 'heard' and get some spotlight on themselves. My above posted one was taken from one such example.

However the multi-Oscar win...especially the one for the much loved by Indians AR Rahman later sorrta diluted this tirade to some extent.

Coming to the last few lines of your reply...I guess effective realistic cinema does bring out extreme reactions especially from those who are waiting to capitalize on them for their personal agendas

True Grubert...

The infamous Mumbai riots of 1992-93...well ask me I was a college going kid back then and remember getting stuck up at a friends house for two days because of the riots happening outside on the streets

I didn't think I would like the movie and guess what, I did. It has humor, love, hate, violence, survival, and the way the story was delivered was a great surprise. If you want to see an underdog story and a love story in one, this movie is a good one to watch.

I've been to India, Malaysia, Thailand, Phillippines, and around parts of the good old U.S.A. there is poverty in all these places, it's not a big deal to bring it to film if everyone knows it's there. These areas don't define their countries and Slumdog doesn't try to say the slums or the characters religious beliefs define India.

I saw this movie based on friends telling me I should, but I wasn't expecting too much as it didn't seem like my type of movie. After watching it, I can say that it is easily one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. What a great departure from the Dark Knights, Die Hards, and Transformers of the world. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love all of those movies (with the exception of TFormers), but Slumdog was different for me. It made me truly, genuinely care about the fate of the characters, which is very rare for me.

On one hand, this was a story that gave a worldwide audience a glimpse into life in the slums of India. It sends a very important message to people, which is that not all muslims are the same. On the other hand, it tells a story about how two people that face virtually identical experiences in life can take two entirely different paths, showing how thin the line is between good and evil. Finally, and this is what I took away from the movie the most, it is a story about how knowledge, love, and perseverance can overcome poverty, brutality, and despair. In the face of so many horrible events, this is a very uplifting movie. Boyle should be cheered for bringing this story to film so eloquently and masterfully.

i will say this on the topic of the movie itself, i don't think it deserved best picture or whatever it got, great movie, and a pleasant surprise, but i gotta think that there were far better flicks then this over the year.

I fully agree with that cinefan, anyone with an agenda always takes any opportunity presented to further that agenda. I am surprised after the awards that did not add fuel to this fire since this movie really was in the world's spotlight.

Ok, coming back to the BLu ray, is this disc Region A locked or region free?

Thanks.

Just on a side note, i have read alot of things on here that are very judgemental, racist and prejudiced. We like to label people wholesale, without even learning a little more. We are in the age where what ever we want is at our fingertips. And yet some choose to remain ignorant, blindly watching TV to form opinions, or even because of 'hate' you feel due to past events. Research well what your opinions are and base them on fact, then you have every reason to feel what you are feeling.

Just my two cents

Slumdog Millionaire and The Departed are no where near as weak as The King's Speech. The film shouldn't have won. The screenplay shouldn't have won. The director most definitely shouldn't have won. Seems like Hollywood has an everlasting hard on for British royalty in film.

Does anyone have a pic of the Australian slipcover? The ones that I've found have a rating symbol and High Definition banner.
