I'm pretty sure "A Christmas Carol" has had the most remakes. I think somewhere in the neighborhood of the high 50's or low 60's. But didn't you think "The Invasion" sucked compared to the original with Donald Sutherlin and Leonard Nimoy? I sure did, I thought it would be alot better than it was since Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman were the stars

Christmas Carol. It has been remade at least 7 times if not more. Even more if you count the movie Scrooged(Great movie by the way).

Just so you know, for "Body Snatcher" movies

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Body Snatchers (1993)
The Invasion (2007)

So, The Invasion is the 3rd remake, not the 3rd time it's been done.

IMO Texas Chainsaw Massacre... Dracula has had some too. But if it's a different adaptation is that still a remake? Example, Blade Trinity.. That's a dracula movie..

Not movies like Jason 1 thru 87. An actual remake of the same movie.

The Thing is one of my all time favorites. I wish someone would make a follow up movie on this.

Mine too but I hope they leave it alone. Just because they very rarely ever do a good movie justice when they remake it or do sequels.

No movie has spawned more copycats than Lawrence of Arabia

- Dances with Wolves
- The Last Samurai
- The English Patient
- Avatar (James Cameron)

+1 for a new or follow up for The Thing I am a huge fan of the John Carpenter vers. although the first one (The thing from another world?) wasn't bad.

But with Hamlet and others you are talking about versions of a play, not remakes of a movie. Same goes for A Christmas Carol.

What is the record for something that started as a movie?

This is true for Hamlet, but the OP's wording was "based on the same story" in which case both Hamlet and A Christmas Carol would qualify. (A Christmas Carol was originally a short novel, not a play.)

"What is the record for something that started as a movie?" ~ Good question.
