I agree that Pioneers should dominate plasma sales and put LCDs out of business. I never understood the mentality of saving more money just to buy a less enjoyable product you are going to use every day.
Could you have spent more money to buy a better car that you could have enjoyed more? So why didn't you?

A valid point too. It's all a matter of what's most appropriate at the time.

Well, for various reasons, including I don't like cars or driving and I commute to work four times/week without the car. I'd just much rather be at home in front of my 5010.

By the way, it's an '06 Honda Civic and I'm trying to figure out why anyone would need a nicer car.

this is mildy troubling ...

i have myself the last gen pio 5070 and i absolutely love it. but, if pio plasmas keep dropping in sales, i can see one of two things happening.....

either pioneer will continue fighting the good fight and putting out great plasma displays, but the prices will remain high,

or,

pioneer will see this decline in sales and look at lowering the price on their disaplys, which USUALLY means that the overall quality of the the product will get lowered and sacrificed as well.

i, for one, hope they dont go with the latter option. I will pay a premium price for another pioneer plasma in the future knowing that i will receive the best quality for my buck.

*proud supporter of quality pio plasma displays

The weird thing is that Pioneer is actually happy with the fact that they're only catering to a higher-end market (small percentage of the market as a whole). That is what they always aimed for (strategically speaking) and that will remain their target for the foreseeable future.

You can get the 5010 for less than that. It's $3,299 at J&R.

As you can tell from my sig I'm a Pioneer fanatic and based on others' definitions I guess that makes me a "high end videophile." I just purchased my setup this past Christmas based entirely on reviews I had read and my prior experience with Pioneer products. CNET flat out stated that the Kuro line was the best flat panel out there. Obviously not everyone can afford the "high end" stuff but at the end of the day as long as you're pleased with your equipment it matters not what the brand name is.

Just remember that all brands aren't created equal.

Pioneer stuff is some of the best out there. You'll get no arguement from me that it's money well spent

They've probably tapped the current market willing to spend $5k on a 50" or so TV, so until the next price drop they're not going to get a lot of bites

There's also a segment that's waiting for the new blacker than black sets

I just recently bought both a 52''XBR5 & 60'' Pioneer K. & while the XBR5 is a sweet set, its still going back to BB (MAG) .

I had purchased the 42" Elite Kuro, but cancelled the order when I found out it wasn't 1080P. I understand that it still looks fantastic at 1081/720p, but there's no way, after buying the PS3 and a new receiver, that I'm going to buy something that will, hopefully soon, be upgraded to what I really want.

That's an instigative comment. BACK! BACK! ::Prevents people from jumping on you::

Oh, and on a non-instigative, minor note:

-better mileage
-better horsepower
-better styling

...so on and so forth. Sure, you might say 'I don't need more horsepower' - then, others will say, 'we don't need deeeeeeep black levels like those of the Kuro.'

Now, that's over.
