Default How many of you buy because renting HD is so expensive?

After getting hooked on HD video and sound, I think the biggest reason I ended up on this site was to read reviews on bd movies I was thinking of buying. I even appreciate the reviews on movies I'v seen hundreds of times (like Goodfellas). My main point is, normally I would just rent a movie and judge its quality for myself then decide if I want to buy it, but because renting is so damn expensive it doesnt make much sense to rent a BD for $6.00-$7.00 from Blockbuster, etc.... only to confirm that its a movie I want to pay another $20.00+ to add to my humble collection. So thank you for your fair and accurate reviews. You've saved me money.

I'm pretty much right on the edge of canceling my Netflix subscription. Their Blu-ray support pretty much sucks . . . I tried the Blockbuster online deal and that was worse. I have a Blockbuster right down the street from me, but I hate going there because it's always busy and the staff is slow as hell.

I always gather as much information as possible before making a blind buy and only have one movie that I've been pretty disappointed in. If it wasn't worth the purchase, most Blu-ray's can be sold for enough that it basically costs you a rental fee.

I have the 3 at a time plan with Netflix and I guess the area I live in doesn't have as many Blu Ray owners as other areas.

Because,.. It's as easy to rent a Blu Ray as a regular DVD. Even though I own 74 Blu Rays thus far,.. I've rented a bunch more. Now,.. I still rent DVD's if a movie I want to see isn't on Blu Ray yet.

To me it costs the same to rent Blu Ray or DVD and the cost is very low anyway. I get 15 movies a month or so for about $17 or something (don't remember the exact cost but it went down recently for some reason.)

-Brian

p.s. - If I like a movie after renting it I will usually hunt it down and buy it. I love buying movies that I like.

I may be a little different, in the fact that I will rent the standard DVD from netflix, if they don't have the title on, or readily available on, Blu.... If I like it on standard, no risk in buying it on Blu. I (not yet at least) have not purchased a blu-ray movie because the picture and sound was awesome, despite a crappy plot/acting, etc.

Since I'm listening to a commercial for it right now....... I gotta say "No Country for Old Men", although I didn't catch it in theaters, it's not going on the netflix queue, it's gonna be a blind-purchase because it looks AWESOME.

Unless it's something I HAVE to see/own that's not on Blu-ray, I don't buy/rent DVD anymore. If I'm watching a film for the first time, I want it to be the best way possible. I never understood how people can download a movie in pirated crap quality and watch it that way before seeing it in the theater.

You could try Netflix, it's cheaper than renting from Blockbuster.

I used to be a pretty vocal supporter of Netflix . . . in the past few months however, I can't seem to get any Blu-rays that have been released within the past six months.

That might be a positive sign of the masses adopting Blu-Ray......

Ive got a buddy that buys bootleg DVDs on a regular basis. He brought Simpsons bootleg DVD over and I compared it to my Blu-ray version.

I almost wanted to keep it just to enjoy the shock value over and over!
MUCH WORSE (guy in theater with handicam) quality than a ligit DVD, then you compare it to a Blu-Ray

Whats the f**kin point?
Granted, he owned Simpsons when it was still playing in theaters, but thats what the Big screen is for.

I got the Blockbuster pass, but it is very difficult to find a new release. For now, I am basically buying all of the noteworthy titles. Hopefully, the quantity of new Blu-ray releases will increase. It is just hard to watch a movie in SD for me.

I gave up on Netflix, but have been liking the BlockBuster Total Access for the past few weeks. They seem to have a lot more Blu-ray copies, and they ship them from wherever they are, instead of primarily from the closest location. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days to get them, but it beats waiting forever. Also, if there's something new coming out, I can take my titles into the store nearby and exchange it for a title on the shelf.

I buy cause I can't find them to rent easily.
When/if my local Blockbuster starts supporting Blu-ray, then I will rent more.
I also buy cause I want to own some of these myself.

And here I'm loving netflix - got a 2 disc subscription for a year for christmas. I've been watching 2-3 disks a week since the begining of the year - 80-90% of those as Blu-ray.

Now granted, I have almost 100 disks in my queue at the moment and it includes a ton of stuff that isn't new release, but since I haven't been "OMG I have to have it now" with a lot of stuff its worked well for me.

For purchasing I do occasionally blind buy, but I'm fairly discerning. For example, I didn't get to see national treasure 2 or enchanted in the theaters but wanted too and heard they were very good, so those will probably be blind buys.

For me I mainly decide what I want as a buy by whether I'm going to watch it multiple times or if it's just that spectacular that I want to have it in my collection just in case. The Rock was less that $15 and I absolutely love the movie so it was a buy. I know I'll pop it in again sometime this year. RE3 - glad it was a rent - will probably never watch it again unless it's on tv and I'm being lazy. Lost S3 is a little different since it was a great buy, demo quality material, and I love the show - may not rewatch it a ton, but glad I have it.

The toddler affects things a little for me too, as kids films like Disney and Pixar have a high rewatch value.

I usually buy my Blu-ray titles but still rent titles I know I won't be viewing twice.

Hollywood Video rents Blu-ray titles for $4.99 and no dollar credit for one day returns like SD DVD.

I just bought 2 of the $1.99 2008 Hollywood Video Calendars, which have 14 Rent one get one free coupons in each calendar.
So, I basically get 2 Blu-ray rentals for $4.99, twice a month.

I buy movies that will be watched repeatedly, so mostly they are movies for the family. Everything else is rental.

I have used both Netflix and Blockbuster, and Netflix is getting worse, but imho still way better than Blockbuster.

I buy movies and games. Games are close to $10 a rental now. Not to mention that you may sometimes forget to return a game or movie on time and suffer another $10 fee. Having said that, once Netflix has a bigger and more available section of Blu-ray, I will rent my movies.
