Yes, my PS3 connected to the SR605 via HDMI sounds great. When I play a movie, I always select the English Uncompressed audio track and it always sounds better than the the Dolby 5.1 track.

And my bad for making it sound like the SR605 wasn't 7.1. I meant to say that since I did not have a 7.1 speaker set up, I didn't need the SR705's ability to take a 5.1 input and matrix it into a 7.1 signal. I believe that it either does a better job of this than the 605 or the 605 doesn't do it at all. Again, not important to me since I only have a 5.1 speaker set up.
