I suppose I am getting cynical with my posts over Hollywood in recent months. I just look at what is being done in Asia, Europe, a place like Korea, who releases extremely good, entertaining movies with budgets that don't even come close to half of what Hollywood as for most of their movies and you are left wondering after seeing them "ok lot's of pretty CGI but where was the story and characters?"

I can't be just the only one feeling this way?

Well with films like Super 8 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes on what seems like shoestring budgets compared to Transformers, those films have 100% better character and story writing So I completely see where you are coming from.

Wow, I've never been happier that a film I've anticipated has been cancelled. The problem they have is it shouldn't cost $200m, and it shouldn't have werewolfs in. Part of me has to ask if this is to do with the big Twilight phenomenon. Also, I think I'd prefer the titular character to be the main one. The Coen Brothers True Grit only took $38m to make, and if they made The Lone Ranger right, without the werewolf plot, it shouldn't take much more.

Yeah, they could finance ten to twenty movies by people like Terry Gilliam, David Lynch and other directors who struggle getting their movies financed at all. That they instead wanted to make a 250 million dollar project that would probably completely ignore the source material seems insane. But hey, it has Johnny Depp in it (I'm not criticizing him as an actor, by the way).

I don't think it was about Twillight but more like they wanted to go the Pirates movies and add some mystical elements, so the werewolves with American Indian....sort of agree however, a bit silly.

Default Things Now Looking Up

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Deadline told you a week ago that things were looking up for The Lone Ranger for the first time since we broke the shocking news on Aug. 12 that Disney had pulled the plug over budget. I’m hearing that the studio is likely to have everything resolved by next week, and can start rehiring crew so that the picture will be ready to begin production in January or February.

I bet Depp had something to do with the look of Tonto. He likes being "odd" at times.

Probably I just don't think it was needed to go this extreme.

Yeah, it's a "buddy" film, but I doubt Armie Hammer will act like a burnt out pot head like that hack of an actor Seth Rogan.

I don't think that's THE look of Tonto, just as I don't think the Lone Ranger wears black--
If they're doing the classic iconic origin story (and rumors aren't sure about that), Depp's shaman getup would be more appropriate to the scene of John Reid's "burial" at the Rangers' gravesite.
Still, can't keep Depp away from the scruffy feather-extensions and the Tim Burton white, can you?

Again, think they're going for the idea of Tonto as "cast-out half-breed" to explain why he isn't really a native stereotype, and why he has nowhere else to go apart from his kemosabe. (And won't do an unnatural act.)
Expect a lot of self-apology in the characterization, but I don't think they're going to "shock" extremes to get cliche's out of the audiences' heads.

I don't like Tonto's look... maybe it'll grow on me but the face paint and crow on his head is what bothers me the most.

You aren't alone. I don't like it much either. Reminds me too much of Jack on the island in Dead Man's Chest. Just not feeling it, really.

If Tonto's suppose to be a Indian why they cast Johnny Depp? Or am I missing something here?

Well historically, didn't many Native Americans wear "war paint" when engaging in battle? I'm pretty sure he won't be wearing it the whole movie.

Johnny Depp is actually part Native American. That's why he wanted to play the role.
