Is this possible? I've read stuff from last year saying that if my PS3 is set to 720p, that it will downscale to 480p.
My TV can accept 1080i signals, but Id rather leave it set to my TVs native resolution, that way the PS3's signal doesn't have to be changed by my TV. I have a Samsung LNT405, and I'm using my PS3 through HDMI. I have my PS3 set to 720p in the setting, having unchecked the 1080i box. Setting the PS3 to 1080i will be fine for Blu-Ray I assume, but for games that support 1080i my TV would have to downscale and deinterlace, making them look worse. To summarize, I want to leave my PS3 to 720p, so that my TV just displays the signal, and the PS3 takes care of the downscaling from 1080i/p on BD and sends out a 720p signal. |

My TV was 1080i. It sure seemed to be sending everything 1080i. I did not have a way for the TV to tell me though.

If you are playing Video Game which is 720p/1080i/1080p, it will downscale to 720p if set to 720p. If set it to 1080i and any thing is 720p, it will upcovert to 1080i or sometime downscale to 720p to make it look like 1080i |

The PS3 will convert Blu-Ray movies into 480p if you set your PS3 to 720p max resolution. Thus when a BD is put in, the BD content is 1080i/p, so instead of the PS3 downscaling to 720p it downscales to 480p.
I found out that with firmware 1.8 this is fixed, so playing a BD movie when my PS3 is set to 720p should actually be 720p, not 480p. |

Yes, this is fixed. If you have your max resolution set to 720p, your ps3 will indeed display 720p for blu-rays.

But there is no point in that because if the content is 720p, the PS3 upscales it to 1080i, then the TV will downscale to its native 720p. The content is going through 2 scaling process's instead of just displaying. A 1080i capable TV still displays all content in its native resolution, in most cases 720p. So to play a BD in 1080i your gonna have to have the TV downscale to 720p anyways. |

Heh, thanks. I guess I kinda answered my own question but thanks for confirming it. I don't have a BD myself yet and I was just trying to fully understand everything.

Yep, but the reason I leave 1080i unchecked is because games that support 720p and 1080i will run in 1080i if I do so, and thus be downscaled back to 720p by my TV. Not what I want to happen.

Just to throw another question out there, if I have both 720p and 1080i checked, will the PS3 always choose to send out games in 720p, if the game supports both? EDIT: Apparently some games that support both default to 720p, some 1080i. Last edited by method47; 02-12-2008 at 05:00 PM. |

Still, you can untick 1080i anyway. |

I am amazed how people can tell whether their source (movie/game) is being played in 1080i or 720p resolution.
My TV supports both, I'm totally unable to tell which format is going on when I watch a movie. I'd say 1080i because my PS3 is set on it, but I cannot verify this. If anyone feels like a hero, please tell me how you do it! |

This video goes some way to explaining a few processing methods and the results. Some people just don't notice various visual artifacts like combing and tearing. |

Thanks Shin-Ra, that's interesting stuff
Nokkie >> I suspected it was something like a TV function. I've tried every button on my TV but it doesn't seem to have this (haven't found anything in the manual either). Doesn't really matter, I'm happy as it is now anyway ![]() |
