Default Need Help: PS3 wireless Question

I was wondering if someone could answer a PS3 question for me. I have my PS3 hooked up in my basement. I have my computer upstairs w. high speed internet. Where I'm going with this: is there an internal wireless card in the PS3 that I could connect to or do I have to string a 100ft ethernet cord through the walls down to where I have my PS3?

"Good on ya", so "yes" it does have a internal wireless card. So if you already have a wireless router your set.

Assuming you already have functional wi-fi, you should check for signal strength on the 60 GB PS3. Once that is established, you'll have to enter SSID, WEP key, and perhaps MAC address (dependent on security levels set on your wi-fi setup). For me, luckily, setting the wi-fi up was fairly smooth.

Rup.

Excellent. I'm assuming then when I try loggin onto the PS Network it will automatically detect it, I don't have to configure anything.

You need to run a cable.

You can always buy a wireless router or a usb wifi adapter for your computer...but because your ps3 is in the basement, you will get a really slow connection at best. If you want to play online, you will need an ethernet cable.

wolf, how does it matter? really, ur network will function wirelessly at ~54mbps. what is the upload speed of the net connection, 3mbps tops? given that, it really doesn't matter. the only time you'll have an issue is if u have a weak signal and are constantly disconnecting.

I curently use wifi for all my PCs in my house except for the one connected directly to a wireless router. (thats 4 PC's total). For me connecting a new device to my network is easy, no wires nessary. I can connect, by Wii, PS3, DS, and PSP to the network all at once, simply by inputing my network security setings.

I can download 200mb HD trailers form PS3 store in less than 10 minutes.

Distance and what marterials the signal will pass through, such as thick concerete walls, metal bemes, or just the shear number of object the signal must pass through can cause signal degregation.

Basements are fortified with the house's foundation, and contain your electrical breakers, water heaters, furnice (in cold regions), and plumbing. All
of which can degrade signal quality.

There is a simple test to see if Wifi can reach your basement. Radio.
Wifi is nothing more than rado waves as the carryier for data. If you have no trouble catching FM radio in your basement, say most of your poupular stations, then wifi should work. The ultimate test is AM radio, as am radio is very subseptible to what I mentioned above.

hope this helps i had the linksys srx400 which had super range got my downstairs tv/ps3 to between 68-80% connected but because of the settings online gaming wasnt an option i have 2 ps3's one thats 29ft from the router and the other i just mentioned. i switched to a netgear rangemax and even tho i get lower signal downstairs because of the reduced settings for security and all that stuff nat crap games on-line and dwnloading run amazing so if your having problems try switching ur router worked for me.( also i have 30mbps down/ 5mbps upload.. so half of that is 15) but you should try switching to one that is recommended for games

or, you can simply allow more tunnels and ports to be opened on ur router or can even implement a DMZ for the ps3 itself...

much cheaper than buying a new router

u can pik up a fairly decent router and house level should not matter i pic up my motorola router for 29 99 and i have a faly large house and i can go to all corners for house and even out side with no problem's i suggest pouting your router in the middle of your house away from walls and such or if u computer fairly close to ps3 (with in 50 feet or so) then just put beside computer.

I have my main computer on the second floor with a router and my PS3 on the first floor has no problems picking up a signal for updates. I mean, my girlfriends laptop has more problems with the wireless system than I do with my PS3.

For what its worth I have mine about 10-12 feet away on the same floor.
My brother however has his(ps3) in the basement and is about 20-30 feet away from his router(1st floor) and has no problems what so ever. I have played him in motor storm and resistance and neither of us have any trouble.

Wired Ethernet connections are always better since they are faster and more secure. The problem is not everyone has a wired network in their home. The great thing about the PS3 60GB version is it has a option for wireless networking built in. Just about all the new homes being built over the last 5 years by home builders have networking Ethernet cables in the walls as a standard feature. Wireless option is good for people in older homes.
Where I use to live I had trouble with a wireless connection sometimes and I would experience latency issues once in a while with wireless. When I moved I now have wired networking in every room and got rid of the wireless router. With CAT 5E I can have 1GB networking. The gigabyte routers are awesome. I hope future BLU-RAY and audio video devices support 1GB networking.

Ken Kutaragi

"Thought in it there are 7 SPEs, it may be seen only as one hardware component from users. But since PS3 has Gigabit Ethernet from day one, you can connect CELLs right away at 1Gbps when you have more CELLs in your home. It can be a home server, or more PS3s, in various styles CELLs in home can connect with one another via network. "

Honda: In the aspect of AV entertainment, what function does CELL computing that centers at PS3 offer us?

Kutaragi: Imagine we can realize the world where can easily use supercomputing power in home. CELL can realize it. PS3 and other CELL-embedded machines have the base for CELL computing through network. What's possible with a supercomputer?

For example, we internally call it as "ripening", if you lay content in a storage server on a network, CELL ripens it when it's not used and improves its quality. For example it can ripen an SD resolution movie to up-convert to an HD movie with more details. Those contents are stored in "CELL Storage" that is a network storage with Gigabit Ethernet and RAID. We have many plans but will certainly offer CELL Storage.

(Honda's comment: the same kind of up converting a movie was demonstrated by Intel but they explained it requires a future many-core CPU. CELL will be able to do it and other wonderful things on a home network)

That was always part of Sony's plan .. not sure what the other guys are doing

This will not make any difference on the speed of the connection wirelessly, this chap has clearly stated that the ps3 does not pick up the wifi connection.

The only 2 things that *may* help would be to make a method of directing the wifi signal, ive seen methods of using a tin can with an open end, to act as a director. OR to buy another router, that would be better at supplying a stronger signal.

i was responding to the idea of buying a new router. seems a little silly
