Default Will this work

if i hook my xbox 360 up to my new hdtv throught the component cables(red, green blue) and turn the picture switch to hdtv and watch a regular dvd (not using the hd-dvd add on piece)

will it show in 1080i/720p or will i have to watch it through the standard yellow av cables

because watching regular dvd's on my 3 year old hdtv is just a bad expreience its like watching a vhs or worse its just a terrible picture.

The XBOX 360 does not upconvert DVDs. The component cables will simply allow you to view 720p and 1080i games at their respective resolution. (depending on what your tv can handle)

It will not up-rez, but you can still watch it on the componet cables.

I was told my X-box tech support awhile ago that the outboard HD-DVD drive did upscale through Component but only at 1080i.The regular drive in the main X-box wont upscale though so if that's what you meant then I agree there. The outboard unit wont do 1080p because it would need HDMI out... which it doesn't have and X-Box says they have no plans for it.

my tv is 1080p but i just wanted a better picture when watching standard dvd's because im not getting a blu-ray player for a few weeks

when i tried watching the departed on my hdtv the picture was so bad i had to turn it of and go watch it on my 20 inch standard sharp tv and that was like a HD picture compared to the actual hdtv that i played it in

Component should be a minor improvement in terms of less edge ringing, colors more accurate, that type of thing. Re-tweak your display. Play with the settings until you get an image you're happy with.

I don't think you want to be using the 360 as a DVD player anyway, the picture quality is downright poor as I found trying to watch The Aviator via both Component and VGA.

well i think the xbox 360 is great for a dvd player. i have had 4 different dvd players and my 360 had the best PQ.

would any of you recommend a dvd upconverter until i get a blu-ray player. i know it probbly wont have HD PQ but as long as it would at least look like a dvd and not like a vhs i would be happy

here ya go. Apparently it just upconverts to 480P Unless you use VGA, it will upconvert to 1080p? this makes no sense, with component cables you can easily view 720p and 1080i... if it's capable of upconverting to 1080p with VGA cables, why can't it up upconvert to 720p/1080i with component cables?

Basically, no it doesn't upconvert DVDs, it just ehances them by making the progressive. (480p or Enhanced Definition) But component cables are definitely better and games will look better.

Most Definitely! They are cheap and help. Plus Standard Def just doesn't cut it anymore. Upconverters do put out HD (720p/1080i). However, depending on which one you buy, it will pause every once in a while to buffer.

edit: I forgot to mention, upconverters are nice, but make no mistake... Blu Ray blows it away imho.

I was reading the back of an XBOX 360 game at my friends house last night and it said it supported 720p / 1080i / 1080p. Can the XBOX 360 display 1080p for games? And if not, why would they put this on the game package?

haha i know nothing compares to blu-ray. last week when i went into best buy to get my new tv i made them hook up the samsung bd-p1000 and they put in superman returns and because my tv the jvc 1080p 56FN97 uses a different type of display than dlp and lcd the PQ was amazing there was no grain or anything like that which i saw when the same player and movie was hooked up to a samsung

but thats why i have to wait a few weeks to get my blu-ray player because i just spent almost 25 hundred. so i need to pay a lot of that off so i wont have interest build up and then i will get my player

Well some televisions (few) can accept 1080p via Component cables. But this is not mainstream. True 1080p is via HDMI which is pretty much industry standard now and as we all know, the 360 does not have HDMI... yet. So, no matter what the box says, it's not truely 1080p. They put it on the box because it's M$

It seems the 360 just upscales to 1080p. It doesn't appear to be able to have native 1080p games.

On a side note, my TV said 1080p when I was watching a DVD on it. It is a bad idea though. My ISF tech said it is completely inaccurate for upscaling DVDs.

Too much confusion. Go to the X-Box website and contact tech support either by phone or e-mail. That's what I did.

Dave, the reply you got from tech support is a load of unmitigated crap!

The outboard HD-DVD drive is what????

A freakin drive thats what!

How in the hell can they look at anyone with a straight face, and tell them that an outboard drive up-converts????

Up-converting is a function of the GPU and all its applicable sub-systems... if the GPU on the 360 doesn't up-convert its regular drive, by what divine intervention is it going to upconvert an outboard drive?

And for any fanbois wanting to come in proclaiming that it is some kind of firmware miricle which allows only up-converting from one drive and not the other... I say thats just plain stupid... if they were setting up the firmware to up-convert, they would have it up-convert EVERYTHING and use it as a marketing tool.

Microsoft may be many things, evil, self important, Evil, manipulative, EVIL.... but they most definately are not stupid. I hate to say it dave, but I do believe the tech lied to you. Whats that, a Microsoftee lying??? say it ain't so!

Seriously, that's what they said... I talked to two different guys there. This was back a couple of months when I was doing research on both systems before I decided on one. I asked about the 1080p thing and they kinda laughed and said, "Well, not really, it downconverts any 1080p movie to 1080i" but I did ask them specifically if the outboard DVD drive upconverted SD DVD's and they said yes but only to 1080i.

It may upconvert DVD's to 1080i over component... HOWEVER! They CANNOT be copyprotected movies. Which most are...
