He would provide rabbits for each of them, and a horse for Gandalf, for their journey to the forest, and he would lade them with food to last them for weeks with care.... Water, he said, they would not need to carry this side of the forest.... 'But your way through Mirkwood is dark, dangerous and difficult,' he said....
That will of course be from the uber-rare edition that never reached most bookshelves in countries that have the english language, unlike the editions that i have that feature horses and ponies instead of steroid-freak rabbits pulling chariots and sledges.

That was Radagast played by Sylvester McCoy in the trailer, if i am not mistaken. The rabbits pulling the sledge was a not-so-positive 'what the hell is this shit' moment for me. Looks like something from a U rated childrens film!

Will never happen.

The Tolkien Estate won't be selling the film rights to anything else (unless there is a major, major power structure change.

We had a pretty good discussion on it, several months back now.

I'd say once Christopher kicks the bucket, it won't be very long until the film rights for everything get sold. He's the one so staunchly against it.

That's certainly true at the moment, but these things have a way of changing in heartbeat given the right incentives...we can dream!

It's really a shame that Christopher Tolkien won't relent. I think that if his father were alive he would enjoy the films. They may not be completely true to the books, but they retain the heart and the feel of the narrative.

I agree. The only real problem with the movies are the changes to certain characterizations (Faramir, Theoden, Aragorn...). Other than that, I think Tolkien would be absolutely delighted with the films. I'm really hoping that one day we get a Children of Hurin television series and eventually one for The Silmarillion as a whole. I think that would be the best way to deal with the First/Second Age material. With the success of GoT, I think a door has been opened for fantasy to receive high enough budgets to make absolutely fantastic television series.

I guess a TV series would be as close as you could get with that story, as the main character is
[Show spoiler]such a failed hero that almost everybody he encounters ends up having a very bad end.

I just don't see the general audience really embracing this.

I think you could easily get away with it on pay-cable television, like HBO. It's such a beautiful story, even in it's tragedy, that I think people would accept it. I think television is going to become the forum for epic fantasy film making. Now that the technology necessary is becoming more cost-efficient, directors can spend as much time as they want to build all these incredible, complex, richly detailed Fantasy Worlds. It's really an exciting time, I think, for fantasy fans.

That's where I have to strongly disagree - I feel that the films completely and utterly failed to capture the heart and feel of the books' narrative.

But we all have our own ways of interpreting things, so I guess my interpretation simply doesn't match Jackson's crowd-pleasing approach (which is fair enough - if you loved the films and they got you into Tolkien's wonderful world, then great ).

Well, what's good on paper for a book where YOU visualize it in your mind isn't NECESSARILY good for a movie where the director is doing the audio/visual processing for you. There may have been a time when the two mediums were somewhat comparable, but I think the digital age has completely ended that era. People who grew up w/ the books b4 digital images became commonplace on the screen will probably NEVER think the movies measure up. They have a distinct perspective(as far as comparison) than younger people who don't really know anything else but the modern era of audio/visual stimulation. Seriously, how many people would read a book like LOTR these days compared to the time when it was written? Kinda sad...

I saw Fellowship before I had ever read LOTR or any of Tolkien's works. So it is possible that I have been molded to cherish the films, but the films inspired me to read the books which I greatly enjoy to this day.

Excellent.

Do you prefer one over the other? Or do you love them both but in different ways?
