Pascuel Perez died yesterday in a home invasion. He was a journeyman pitcher in the 80s, but he'll always be remembered in Atlanta (by people who go back far enough, or have parents that let them know, since both events happened before my birth) for 2 things: his part in starting a massive series of fights against the Padres and for getting lost on I-285 in Atlanta (which is just a circle around the city).

Quote:
Pascual Perez, recently acquired from Pittsburgh and just up from Richmond, was scheduled to start on a Thursday night in August. His new team had lost 19 of 21 to fall four games behind the hated Dodgers. Only just outfitted with a driver’s license, Perez went literally in circles, stopping only because he was almost out of gas. A guy at the service station recognized him and spotted him a splash of petrol — Pascual had forgotten his wallet, too — and by the time he arrived at the old stadium Phil Niekro was on the mound in his stead.

The tension broken by Pascual’s misadventure, the Braves won 13 of the next 15 to reclaim first place. Come the season’s final week, the wayfarer started twice — both games were on the road, so no worries about Atlanta navigation — and won both times to keep the Braves a game in front of L.A., which is exactly where they finished.

I remember him more with the Expos. He was one funny, wacked out dude. They showed some of his on the field antics on TSN yesterday....Hilarious.

R.I.P. to a true character of the game.

Looks like the Dodgers are getting close to signing Mark McGwire as their new batting coach.

Good move. I would take guys like McGwire and Bonds as hitting coaches any day. Please, no supplier jokes. I'd want either guy because they both had an excellent approach at the dish.

I'd rather have Bonds than McGwire. McGwire was all power. Bonds could hit the ball anywhere on the field consistently.

Jose Canseco was on the Jim Rome (radio) Show yesterday and he was lobbying for the Rockies or Blue Jays manager job and one of the reasons he listed as why he should get the job is because he believes a person can't teach power hitting unless they were a power hitter. He also said if Ozzie Guillen can get a manager job then there's no reason that he shouldn't get a chance, apparently forgetting the fact that he has no managerial experience and and a past that would scare any owner away.

Any Yankee fans want to chime in?
I doubt we give him that money....Rivera will also e back next year, so Soriano would be a set up man...

Despite being suspended 50 games and not playing at all in the playoffs Melky Cabrera will still receive a full playoff share from the Giants that should be worth over $300,000. From the link:

Quote:
Then there's Cabrera. He spent 117 games on the roster this season, and he stood to make 72.2 percent of a full share. But an obscure union rule mandates a full share if a player's team plays 10 games after the suspended player is eligible to be reinstated.

Cabrera was eligible to come back for Game 1 of the NLCS. The Giants chose to keep him on the shelf, but the team also played 11 more playoff games. And that triggers a full share for Melky.
Melky could potentially get more money than players like Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro because those players joined the team later in the season and thus it will be up to the members of the team who were on the roster the whole season to decide how large a share they get.

He will def get a cut but since players decide how much, I doubt he'll get more then the likes of Pence or Scutaro...

The players only get to decide how much players that aren't guaranteed a full share get. By automatically qualifying for a full share Melky will get just as much as any player who spent the whole season with the Giants. The players who spent the whole season on the roster decide how much players who weren't with the team the whole year get, as well as how much certain staff members like trainers get.

Delmon Young pleads guilty. My favorite part is bolded. All this time I thought South Park invented the Museum of Tolerance. But amazingly enough it exists.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/86...sment-new-york

Quote:
Former Detroit Tigers slugger Delmon Young pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated harassment for shouting an anti-Semitic slur and tackling a man to the ground outside a New York City hotel last spring.

The 27-year-old outfielder, who became a free agent after the World Series, was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and enroll in a program at the Museum of Tolerance New York as part of the Manhattan District Attorney's office restorative justice program.
"Delmon clearly regrets what happened and took the necessary steps to put this issue behind him today," his lawyer, Dan Ollen, said in a statement. "He has learned from this experience and will continue to do everything he can to improve himself as a person and player."

In the court-ordered program, Young will participate in interactive workshops, videos, guided discussions and special instruction by museum educators to explore issues of prejudice, diversity, and tolerance, the district attorney's office said.

The museum reports progress back to prosecutors. If Young completes the program successfully he'll be able to withdraw his plea and plead guilty to a lesser charge.

"Dispositions for defendants charged with bias-related crimes need to be thoughtful and tailored toward healing both the defendant and the entire targeted community," District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance said.

Ollen said that in six months, "the charges against Delmon will be vacated and reduced to a simple violation of harassment, which is not a crime under New York law."

Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York and was accused of yelling anti-Jewish epithets at a group of tourists, tussling with them and tackling one to the ground in April, when the Tigers were in town to play the New York Yankees.

Young apologized to his team and was suspended without pay for seven days by Major League Baseball, costing him approximately $257,240 of his $6,725,000 salary. He batted .267 during the season with 18 homers and 74 RBIs, and hit three home runs and had a .313 batting average in the postseason.

He had a tying home run in the sixth inning of Game 4 of the World Series. San Francisco won 4-3 in 10 innings to complete a sweep of the Tigers.

Detroit is prepared to let the designated hitter sign with another team. Speaking at the general managers' meetings in Indian Wells, Calif., Tigers president Dave Dombrowski declined comment.

"Because he's a free agent," he said.

Photos: First look at Petco Park’s new dimensions

Quote:
The San Diego Padres recently announced plans to move the fences in at pitcher-friendly Petco Park by approximately ten feet from the indentation in the right field corner all the way to right center field — an area covering roughly 30 percent of the outfield — as well as lowering the wall itself from ten feet high to eight feet.

Thanks to their President and Chief Executive Officer, Tom Garfinkel, as well as the power of Twitter, we can bring you the first photos of the renovation project and a little bit of a sneak preview of what the new and improved — at least from a left-handed hitters perspective — Petco will look like when it's unveiled in April.

When looking at the photos, pay no attention to the temporary construction wall. Obviously the fences aren't coming in that far. But you can clearly see where the new warning track will be in the photo above. In the photo below, you get a little glimpse at the construction of the visitor's bullpen, which will now be located above the home bullpen in left center field.

Quote:
When renovations are complete, the deepest part of the park in the right field power alley will be reduced from 402 feet to 390, which is the most significant distance change. If you can believe it, that spot was actually 411 feet when the ballpark opened in 2004. Also, the out-of-town scoreboard which was featured prominently on the right field wall will be relocated as a part of the project. It's unknown where exactly that will fit in when the dust eventually settles.

The Rockies hired Walt Weiss as they new manager. Weiss played for the Rockies from 1994-1997 and was a special assistant to the GM from 2002-2008. His only managerial experience is coaching his son's high school team last year (which is interestingly the same high school Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin attends).

Dodgers win Ryu Hyun-jin bidding

Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have bid nearly $26 million for a chance to sign pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin.

The Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization said Saturday they have accepted a posting fee of $25.7 million for the 25-year-old left-hander. Major League Baseball later announced that the team was the Dodgers.

"We are thrilled to have this exciting opportunity," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "We have watched Ryu pitch for a long time and he is another option to consider as we look to improve our team in 2013 and beyond."

The Chicago Cub and Texas Rangers were also among the clubs thought to be interested in Ryu.

Los Angeles now has 30 days to negotiate a minor league or major league contract with Ryu, who was 98-52 with a 2.80 career ERA during seven seasons in South Korea. He pitched for his country on teams that won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and reached the championship game of the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

The $25.7 million fee will be paid to the Eagles only if Ryu signs with the major league team.
First thought when I heard the guys name was Hadouken

They have also offered a 2 yr deal to Torri Hunter
