Will final HD movies on BDs end up being authored with MPEG-4 rather than MPEG-2?

While there will be hardware support for MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1, it will be up to each movie studio to decide which format(s) they actually use, so we'll have to wait and see.

Will blu-ray discs be able to be read on actual DVD players, or people will need to buy a new machine

Unfortunitly BD's will not play in current DVD players. You will need to purchase a Blue-Ray player in order to watch BD's. In addition you should also have a High Definition Television to take advantage of of 720P and 1080P formats. I am personally looking forward to the computer disc version of Blue-ray. Just wait and see from here on, should be interesting.

Warner Bros will choice the VC1 (WMV) and the Fox the MPEG-4 AVC for less space BD-R (9 Go)...
