Just dropped the 320gb WD scorpio in my PS3, went off without a hitch!

I previously had a 32Gb external drive connected with a USB cable and so I did a system Backup to that before upgrading the drive... All of my games and saved data was replaced without having to download anything! I was thrilled that I didn't lose a speck of my data!

I put the old drive in the anti-static bag the new drive came in for safe keeping in case I need to send it in.

I'm still amazed how small those laptop drives are compared to their 3.5" counterparts.

Could heat be a problem when PS3 drive is upgraded. The PS3 is designed for certain drive and if it is upgraded to a larger version, which could generate more heat, that could create issues. I am not saying it will but this is a possibility. Any experience, comments?

Thanks.

Syncguy, I put in a 7200 RPM drive and have had no overheating issues. I even set my PS3 to work on Folding@Home overnight leaving the thing running for 6 to 9 hours each time and still no problem. Just make sure it's in a well ventilated area and you will be good to go.

I also thought it would be relevant to put on something about external HDDs.

You can put on any USB 2.0 HDD as long as it is in the FAT32 format which most drives are when you buy them, if not use a PC/Mac to refomat it.

You can use any size from 40GB to 2TB. But not all options are avalable on externals as internals.

on an external you cannot-
Save games
have PSN games
store themes
and you still need an internal HDD.

note MIcro drives for CF type II also need to be in FAT32.

Default PS3 hard drive increase. 320gb?

Im looking to swap my 60gb ps3's hard drive out with for a 320gb. does anyone know who makes hard drives that are commonly used for this? and more importantly, has anyone on here actually done this who could give any tips on how to do it?

thanks for any help

The manual contains detailed instructions on how to swap out a hard drive. There is also a sticky thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=37467 with more information, and I think links to good hard drives to use.
