New it. Soon as i saw the blasted Sled pulled by rabbits and the birdcrap covered Radagast, i knew that Jackson would push the humour factor too far. Honestly...
Its going to be a long movie, especially when the Extended version comes out. I wouldn't let a few scenes ruin a great movie for me.

+1 By the way how many people here have actually seen the ridiculousness in question?

I'm trying to work out what Jackson's motivation for it, that's all. If it turns out the rest of the book is adapted relatively unscathed (and i'm positively jazzed about Barry Humphries playing the Goblin King) then so be it. Simple: Don't subtract, just add if you must!
And did you read the rest of the review that the quote was pulled from? Because it's overhwelmingly positive. Or has everyone just jumped on the one quote that fitted their pre-set assumption and decided that was enough?

You can't judge a book by its cover or a movie by one sentence in a review taken out of context.

Aside from the sensationalist footage, some of which was unintentionally comical (the avalanche of skulls on the Paths of the Dead in the extended version immediately comes to mind), it was the non-Tolkien fabricated plot elements and dialog that were most objectionable in the three LotR films. One brief example, in The Two Towers when Legolas panics before the Battle of Helm's Deep and has the short verbal scuffle with Aragorn ("and I will die with them!"). Anyone familiar with the saga knows that such an occurence would have been impossible (Elves do not panic), and it subtracted from the authenticity so painstakingly built-up by the models, props, costumes, make-up, and special effects departments.

This is what Jackson and Boyens need to avoid in the Hobbit films. On one hand I am optimistic because the subject matter of The Hobbit is far less serious than LotR, and therefore (one would imagine) less vulnerable to thematic abuse. Despite her visual appeal, we can be thankful there is not an Arwen in this story to tempt screenwriters into contriving ridiculous plot situations. From what I have seen and read about to date, the Hobbit-related footage should be fantastic. I am not as optimistic about the Appendices-related material, as that is an entirely different matter that ties into the larger thematic elements of the saga (mortality, good vs. evil, the relationship of the heroic and noble to the "rustic", questions of how sorrow and suffering can exist in a world created by a perfect being, etc.). I am not convinced that the screenwriters have a handle on this larger context of the story. This is where Jackson & co. need to be careful - to avoid repeating the flaws of the LotR movies, in what otherwise would probably have been the greatest films of all time.

Daily News isnt a tabloid, I think your are thinking of the NY Post.
That being said, still an over-reaction about how much humor is being interjected.

These are preliminary, purposely vague comments due to the embargo. Go see it and make up your own mind. Anyone jumping to conclusions over the comments being made and letting that already decide how much they will enjoy a film is crazy. They probably had a negative disposition towards the film to begin with and were going to crap on it no matter what.

Ah, sorry about that. Well, their review was still otherwise very positive, so no biggie.

Keep in mind that those are NOT true IMAXs. Only the much smaller ones as True IMAXs are incapable of showing 48FPS.

So there is no need to go out of your way to find an IMAX theater if there happens to be a closer one showing it in 48FPS.

Excellent point.

Also, here is a new TV Spot, with some new shots. (Gandalf, Frodo) But, not the one we are all waiting for.

I also love how they tried to make the film more epic by playing down the object of the Hobbit book.

In the book, all they really care about is reclaiming the treasure. In the trailers there's no mention of that being the goal.

It's all about the noble quest of reclaiming the Dwarf's Land. Guess Jackson realized the original story goal was too simple to satisfy 8 hours.

Maybe he will give them airplanes in this one.

Did you also complain about all the walking in Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart and Gladiator also?
