I love Stephen King's books, especially his older ones (Misery, It, The Shining). I never could get into the Dark Tower series though.

Alot of people would recommend skipping the first book for first time readers. If you have a hard time getting into 'The Gunslinger' I would recommend this as well, just go straight to 'The Drawing of The Three'. That book and 'The Wastelands' will have you hooked in no time.

The Mist was excellent, I cant wait for it on Blu-ray! Reading the book now, I know the ending is different.

It is up there with The Shinning, Misery and The Shawshank Redemption.

I picked up the First book in the series in 95 or 96. I still have the last book on my nightstand and read it very little once a week or so. I guess I just don't want it to end.

Default Just finished last night

Wow, good timing on this thread, just finished the series last night.

I liked the "extra" chapter that Stephen gives us at the end. I thought it ironic he
(good naturedly) chastises us for reading on, arguing it is the journey not the destination. I read it because it makes the journey a little longer, not because I wanted a new destination.

I wonder how many people actually took his advice and didn't read the Coda.

Voted for Misery, but almost selected other. How can you not include "Stand by me" in the choices. .

Based on the length of the series I would prefer 1-2 season tv series.

I would have to say book 4 'Wizard and Glass' was my favourite, with book 3 coming in a close second. Loved the backstory Of Roland and his old friends when they were young, would love to read more of that storyline.

I think there was a series of comic books that were made about that backstory. Not a big reader of comic books but I think I might try to find it once I have finished the last book.

You are so right, it is one of my favorites as well. Bad oversight on my part. In fact get the 2-Disc DVD version of Stand By Me. Interesting that Steve wrote himself as Gordy and had Chris Chambers fire the gun in the book. In the movie however; Gordy fires the gun. Very interesting what Reiner saw about the character that King didn't. Watch the movie I dont want to spoil it for you.

I actually named my little brother Roland after the Dark Tower series. I do hope they do seven movies. That would be awesome. Perhaps too awesome for the world to exist as it is.

Okay so I was wrong in my original post - I probably read about 25% of The Wastelands back in 1993. At the very least I know I never made it to River's Crossing, nevermind LUD. Actually, I never made it as far as Shardik the Great Bear, so I don't think I really started reading much of it at all.

Well, last night I finished The Wastelands. What an awesome book. Every single word of it was brilliant - I read the last 300 pages just this week-end gone by. When the magician comes to Andrew Quick and tells him what to say to thank him

I just about shat myself - there are so many times when I've thought to myself, "King should be bronzed for writing that paragraph" - well this was another one. Damn, damn, damn!!!

Anyway, reading the last page I'm now hungry to move onto Book IV, so I looked up the dates to see how long people had to suffer for wondering what would happen to Roland and his band along with Blaine the Mono.

III - 1993
IV - 1997

Hot damn, that's a long time to be in suspense. I'm only having to wait one day!! I'm so glad I waited to finally start this journey over again. I think these could be EPIC movies.

Tell me about it! That was probably the longest 4 years of my life. There are two series of books I re-read every 12-18 months; The Dark Tower and LOTR. I still can't decide which one is the greatest as my opinion changes while I'm reading each. You've gotta finish the series and then read all of the other novels that pull from or tie into the DT series. I've always been extremely impressed how SK intertwines the DT storyline into just about every book he's written. Wait till you get to the last 3!

I'd love to see 7 movies, but I just don't think they'd ever be able to make them to the standard I already have set in my mind.

Funny you would mention the TIME LINE among the books. Stephen King was asked about this and responded: "I knew it was time to get going when an an elderly woman wrote me and said: "Mr. King my time here is nearly up, please, please, I beg you, don't let me die on this GOD FORSAKEN train." Much regards, Mildred. I about lauged my ass off when I read that. Anyway, the Dark Tower is a masterpiece and only in time will it find its rightful place in history. I can tell you this, it won't be be long after Sai King goes to the clearing at the end of the path that people will realize its brilliance.

I remember seeing the first Gunslinger book on a shelf in Kmart, many many years ago. I enjoyed the whole damn thing. Since King stated he was retiring at the conclusion of the Tower (when he was writing book 5 or 6 I believe) - I believed him. As I read book 7, and saw where it was headed - I swore to retire with him.

The ending was pure King. Loved it.

I've read no SK since. Nor will I.

SK quotes find their way into daily mundane activities. When my brother leaves my apartment after a visit, I often wave him away with a "Go then, there are other worlds than these". Or when talking about a less-than-intelligent situation, I'll throw in a "M-O-O-N spells out of gas, Laws YES!". And real fans know what old lady Semple said when I torched her pension check...

I miss Roland. I think it'd make a great movie series, but as with many of kings movies - I doubt a director exists that could get it done right... (Wachowskis? P. Jackson?)

My girl loves when I say, "Long days and plesant nights Lady Sai." And I often use "May we be well met" or "Shall we share Palaver".

There will never be another Roland, he is the greatest and most tragic character ever and I will go to the clearing at the end of the path with him in mind. ROCK ON ROLAND...we all know your still out there looking for more than the Tower....

We deal in lead, friend.
I just finished reading theses seven books for the first time, and I was amazed, as if that word could even describe it. I got to read them straight through, no waiting and it was hard for people around me, girlfriend couldn't talk to me cause I was reading, wasn't doing work at work, just wanted to get back to the books. Some of the beat I've read, and I would definitely love to see them turned into a series of movies, but how could you do them justice?

You'd love my collection. I have every HC Dark Tower Signed and Numbered by King and the Artist. I have an original Phil Hale painting from the Drawing of the Three I bought at Comic Con for $800 now valued close to $8,000 I have the comics even a tee-shirt. The Dark Tower isn't just a series; its now a 'cult' classic. You will find that people who have read the book will almost always stop to share a word or two; they are still enthralled because it was an experience they will never forget. I wanted a movie originally, but now I can wait because nothing cinematic wise can approach the Tower even Eastwood playing Per Callahan. Though I like that idea. The Tower mind you is still out there along with Roland and as King reminds us The Dark Tower was never about the destination though we (the fans), wanted it to be, it was always about the journey. Hell of a journey might I add...and when Roland laid aunt Talitha's cross at the foot of the Dark Tower I cried like a baby, yes it had that kind of affect on me. Like all things will end so will the Tower but King let it live on in our minds and heart and left Roland to find his own truth his own Tower...Thankee Sai King....

That's funny to read about using lines from King's books.
Unfortunately I don't have anyone directly in my life to share quotes with, but my best friend and I who live 5,000km away from each other, we often quote King in our e-mails and the like.

The Gunslinger (Revised Edition)
  • Bag of Bones
  • The Stand
  • The Eyes of the Dragon
The Drawing of the Three
  • The Eyes of the Dragon
  • The Shining (film)
  • The Stand
The Waste Lands
  • Rose Madder
  • The Stand
  • Cell
  • It
  • Insomnia
Wizard and Glass
  • The Mist (from Skeleton Crew)
  • The Stand
  • The Eyes of the Dragon
Wolves of the Calla
  • 'Salem's Lot
  • Black House
  • The Talisman
  • The Stand
  • Low Men in Yellow Coats (from Hearts in Atlantis)
Song of Susannah
  • The Eyes of the Dragon
  • Black House
  • The Talisman
  • The Little Sisters of Eluria (from Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales)
  • Desperation
  • The Regulators
  • Low Men in Yellow Coats (from Hearts in Atlantis)
  • From a Buick 8
  • It
  • Insomnia
  • The Shining
The Dark Tower
  • Insomnia
  • 'Salem's Lot
  • Everything's Eventual (from Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales)
  • Low Men in Yellow Coats (from Hearts in Atlantis)
  • From a Buick 8
  • It

Of the books that are intertwined, these are the ones I have not read.

Rose Madder
Cell
It
Insomnia
Black House
The Little Sisters of Eluria
From A Buick 8
Everything Eventual

Of the books I have read, I’ve obviously found the biggest story to be RF, at which point in The Wastelands I just about fell off my chair in astonishment, as my skin literally raised an inch off the bone.

In addition, as far as memory serves as it's been almost 20 years since I've read some of those, I believe Salem's Lot is still the scariest King book I've ever read....and, I might venture as I recall the book a little more, this Constant Reader may never succumb to those haunted pages ever again.

Insomnia and Black House are two novels with some of the most direct connections to the DT series. Once you finish the series, I would suggest Insomnia first, then read The Talisman and Black House back-to-back.
